Nov 3, 2010The audio stopped working since I upgraded my kernel from 2.6.35.6-45 to 2.6.36.6-48.
Is reinstalling alsa / pulse the only option ?

Jul 25, 2009I am experiencing sound problems after an upgrade to kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE from kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.i686.PAE in several games like Neverwinter Nights (linux binaries) and Warcraft III (PlayOnLinux). The sound stops and changes into a very choppy annoying sound. When I boot into the old kernel the problems are gone.

Mar 1, 2010I am working for Fedora 12 installed on my laptop, and skype has worked. I was able to speak, able to listen and everything (besides some installation problems) was working fine.
Then I allowed Fedora to update(or bugfix or enhacement) some items of my system.
Now when I click on the loudspeaker symbol in the panel and open the mixer I see various tabe for sound input and output. Finally a good idea, and I even have a slide for skype!
But it does not work, I don't hear anything from skype (version 2.1.0.47).
I am able to record and playback via arecord/aplay, so in principal it should work. Any ideas what is wrong? Maybe a bug in a bugfix?

Sep 10, 2010Well, the gdm issue was pretty easy to solve. Just reinstalled NVIDIA video drivers in runlevel 3.
But sound seems to be a litle more dificult. Before I spend some hours, I would like to ask if some had the same problem.

Dec 16, 2010I've just upgraded my kernel to 2.6.32 and I cant use sound anymore!!! My card was detected ,here is the output of lspci |grep Audio

also frimware is installed ,gstreamer as well the sound is not on mute and it was working on the previous kernel .

Aug 20, 2010Today, I installed the recent kernel security update (i.e. 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP). After a reboot, the sound is gone.
From my user account:
mpc@awd:~$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
Same problem with "aumix".
However, the commands "sudo alsamixer" and "sudo aumix" seem to work (but still no sound).
"lsmod | grep snd" will give

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Update To 2.6.32-22 Broke My Sound / Get That Back?
Jun 4, 2010I just updated my kernel from 2.6.32-21 to 2.6.32-22 today. Now I am getting no sound. I have checked my mixer levels with both kmix and alsamixer. Nothing appears to be amiss. I tried rebooting with the old kernel and still no sound.

Jun 9, 2010I have a Hardy which last night asked for updates that included kernel changes. Today I find I no longer can connect using WIFI and have no sound. The GUIs are just not there and it's as if the controllers themselves have disappeared. For example lshw -C network reveals a Cisco Airon Wireless, but it's not listed as a wireless device, just as network controller.Can anyone advice me on how to approach this? Is it possible to revert changes or something?

I tried reinstalling all ALSA components and plugins. No luck there.
Rebooting into 2.6.35-24-generic fixes the problem, in that my sound works again.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Heavy Sound Lags After Kernel Update?
Jul 17, 2011After I upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-31 to 2.6.32-32 and then 2.6.32-33, my sound started to lag(the lag occurred on 2.6.32-32 and stayed to 2.6.32-33, but it worked perfectly ever before). Sound does work in itself, but frequently lags and pieces that were already played before will be played again, pretty much like an old vinyl that occasionally jumps or hangs. When I start to replay something, it does not put out anything for a second or two and then starts, when I stop it will keep playing for the exact same amount of time. So, sound is synced to videos(video replay works perfectly well and without the lag). Problem is definitely related to the sound drivers, not to replay software or any buggy file. It occurs with DVDs, Flash Videos in Firefox, music in gmusicbrowser, movie files with VLC, whatever you want. I never experienced such problems with any kernel before. Although I've seen many others posting similar problems, I cannot see any valid solution for myself.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I sure don't want to go to 10.10 for the second.
I reinstalled Alsa and Pulse, no joy. My sound card is recognized correctly by alsa and can be found in aplay -l. It's a generic onboard surround sound device, although I only use stereo channels.

Slackware :: Multilib Does Not Work After Kernel Update
Jun 9, 2011I have a Slackware64-Multilib 13.1 (from the Alien's wiki page) and decided to upgrade the kernel 33.4 to the 37.6 (also using the Alien's wiki page).
But now Adobe, Wine and other related packages with Multilib does not work. So I upgrade the gcc and glibc packages but the problem remains. What did I mess?

Apr 29, 2011I use the on-board sound chip of a Gigabyte motherboard (Realtek)and I have connected it with optical cable to an amplifier.
Everything worked fine, until February, when an update changed the kernel and the PC stopped giving sound signal! When I returned to the previous kernel (at grub), again everything worked. So,it doesn't seem to be a connection or drivers problem.
I supposed that with 11.04 edition this problem would be solved. But it isn't. In fact I have serious problem now because the old kernel isn't listed in grub anymore.

Jan 18, 2010After upgrading kernel, system (AMD 780G)refuses to start in graphic mode. Computer services running fine, but there's nothing or some trash on screen when X started. And no way how to get out except restarting or shutting down from remote computer.
Reinstalling, unistalling ATI driver doesn't help. Also manipulations with xorg.conf (install, safe etc previous file versions)doesn't help.
Sax2 detects videocard correctly, but result is same regardless which resolution@Hz is specified.

Fedora :: Chance To Be Able To Switch From A 32 Bit Kernel To 64 Bit Kernel During The Update?
Jul 18, 2010From F12 to F13. Is there anything I should remove before updating? I have few programs isntalled from source/binary installers in /usr for example. Would it cause problems?
And is there any chance to be able to switch from a 32 bit kernel to 64 bit kernel during the update? The hardware is capable of this.

Jun 12, 2009there is an issue with the way the Linux Kernel addresses memory by default and the graphic drivers for my Asus G1Sn. I have a patch that I had compiled against a custom kernel for 2.6.27.xx how ever it does not work with the latest kernel in Fedora 11. It is beyond me to rewrite the patch to work with a different kernel.

Aug 3, 2010I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

Dec 5, 2010there is no errors in log, also the AV shows PCM input for all sound (pcm/ac3/dts and so on) but there is silence (trying with both pulseaudio and alsa). Everything works with kernel 2.6.35.6-48 and before. the problem exists at least for 2.6.35.9-64.fc14 and 2.6.36.1-11.fc15

Sep 23, 2010I just updated my kernel to 2.6.34.7-56.fc13.x86_64 last night and now I have no system sounds. Audacious plays my mp3's just fine, just as all my multimedia works in my web browser, vlc, etc... The only thing being affected is system sounds. I tried playing a sample with aplay and I got loud, crackling nonsense and this output code...

Fedora :: Can't Update To A New Kernel
Apr 30, 2011I do not understand this problem. I am using kernel 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.i686.PAE and while that works fine I know new kernels makes things work better. As such, every time a kernel update comes along just like all other updates, I perform a yum update. But for some unknown reason, I am successfully updating everything except the kernel.
I have attempted updates with 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686.PAE, 88, and 12-90 and at the very beginning of the boot I always get the same panic error and boot freeze. The message is ALWAYS as foolow. The only part of the message that changes is the kernel numbers.
[I did my best at hand writing the error message.]
I hope this makes sense to someone.

Does any of the above make any sense?? I cannot even figure how I am supposed to fix anything since the computer completely freezes at that point! I am, of course, able to hard reboot. The I switch back to the previous kernel and everything is fine but why does everything EXCEPT the kernel update?
Fedora :: Kernel Module Crash With Sound?
Dec 21, 2009Sound disappears as soon as I try to use an application e.g. News Video Fox, CNN, BBC or playing a video disk or cd disk, and a kernel module crash is reported (listed below from logs) After this happens no sound, and the desktop freezes (X11 only Linux is fine). Restarting X obviously do not solve the problem.
It seems that Fedora 12 has sever problems with Intel Sound cards.
I guess it is not really a Kernel developers problem but more the authors for the sound module causing the crash. I already reported it through the popup to "kernel-oops" by clicking on the "black screen" popup reporting the crash on FC12.

Aug 7, 2011I've managed to get some sound through the system with kernel 2.6.40.1. I use multiple sound cards, I have problems with keeping the same order. I added in etc/modprobe.conf The list of sound devices, putting my D66 card as device 3, Rebooted and cat /proc/asound/cards showed all fore devices in the correct order. I got audio through one of the apps , and started to try and get another ,wsjt, to function.
