Ubuntu Installation :: Safe To Update My Kernel With Wubi?
Jun 20, 2010After updating the kernel in Wubi installs, GRUB gets messed up. This has caused me to hold off on the HUGE list of updates in my update manager (I have never updated since I first installed 10.04, and this was just over a week ago). Are these updates important enough to potentially risk something bad happening? What is the risk of updating? Is this an issue with all Wubi installs?

Mar 24, 2011I have a new acer machine which runs fine on 10.10 mythbuntu desktop livecd. Install seemed fine.
Then I ran an update and on reboot I get a kernel panic error. Research on this reveals it as a very deep subject which can consume many hours, so I opted to reinstall.
This time with ubuntu 10.10. I've tried different CDs, liveusb. Same errors.
So, the question is this - where do I concentrate my efforts - somewhere ubuntu doesn't like this machine, or grub. Does a reinstall overwrite the grub install too? Or do I have a bogus grub install I need to purge before I will get anywhere.

Mar 1, 2010The wubi installer copied files successfully and asked for reboot. After booting into Xubuntu the flashing logo appeared for a minute. And then the screen looked as if it was trying to show something but could not and flickered and then became dark this continued till half an hour and then I pressed Alt+Ctrl+Del.I tried all the modes but to no avail, only the last mode with command line was working. But it was not helpful for me becoz I dont know most of the commands.When I tried "Verbose Mode" as directed by the WubiGuide - Ubuntu Wiki, CTRL+ALT+F2 did not work when the installer stopped.The computer I use is assembled with Intel pentium 4, VIA chipset and Mercury(Kobian) motherboard.

Sep 18, 2010I updated to the latest available kernel for Kubuntu 10.04 today (2.6.32-24). When the system rebooted, it refused to connect to my wireless network. So far I have been unsuccessful in persuading it to connect. ifconfig shows the existence of the ethernet connection as eth0, and Network Manager also seems to accept the existence of the ethernet port - so why has it suddenly chosen now to stop connecting to the wired network?

Feb 8, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual boot alongside Windows vista on an HP DV6000 laptop.It's been running smoothly for months. No problems.Today, I was in Ubuntu, and the Update Manager asked me to update (ok) and then said it needed to restart. I hit the restart now button and the system started to shut down, but never fully shut down. It's in a kind of loop, trying to start up, but not going all the way, and then shuts down again.I did a hard reboot but still nothing - the same loop. I don't even see my HP startup screen, nor can I access the BIOS, much less Grub.I put in the Ubuntu startup CD and it tries to read from that at startup, but then fails and returns to the same loop.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update GRUB On 10.04 Wubi?
May 12, 2010I had a bad experience with 9.04 - I installed some recommended system updates, and the updated GRUB killed my installation (which is WUBI), not letting me boot.
I've now installed 10.04, and some updates have come through, one of which is GRUB. So I'm now looking at the "Configuring grub-pc" dialogue box that's popped up, and there's an option to "Continue without installing GRUB?".
What are the risks here? Is my 10.04 WUBI system going to die if I upgrade GRUB again? Or is it going to die if I don't upgrade GRUB?

Nov 27, 2010I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 on our home theater PC through a wubi installation. Yesterday the system update installed a new kernel and today there is a problem booting the computer so I'm reluctantly using Windoze to type this. there isn't much information: the computer has always booted fine before the kernel update. When I select Ubuntu in the boot menu the screen goes black and the computer restarts. No error messages, no GRUB menu, just a blank screen before restart.

Mar 10, 2010I recently installed Netbook Remix(Karmic, I think) on my Samsung N130 netbook as a dual boot with Windows 7. It had been working fine, I'd had no problems switching OS and I had restarted my computer many times without issue.
Today, I was on Windows 7, set it to hibernate when I left the house as I sometimes do, and when I came back and turned my computer on, first it asked which system I wanted to load which it never does after hibernation. I selected Windows, and it took me to the Samsung Recovery Solution screen for some reason, and I closed that. It restarted the computer, and when it turned back on it said GRUB loading, and rebooted again, and keeps looping that whenever I turn it on.
I tried removing Ubuntu using GParted from a flash drive, but I'm still stuck in the loop, and it's gotten rather frustrating.

Aug 22, 2010When I try to use Wubi to install Ubuntu it fails on reboot. It seems to run a script on reboot then nothing. I get a command prompt window with the script and the laptop seems to lock up. Only a hard re-boot will restart the system. I do get a dual screen boot prompt Windows/Umbutu but if I choose Umbutu, I get the same command prompt screen and the system is locked up again. Chosing Windows at the boot screen works fine.

Jul 8, 2010I recently decided to venture into the world of Linux/GNU by installing Ubuntu.
Before installing, I had a 190gb partition for windows 7 and 45gb of unallocated space. Through Wubi, I used the advanced partition editor to make a 6gb swap partition and a 22gb root partition for Ubuntu. All went well, but when I rebooted, I was unable to choose linux.
I installed Ubuntu by using Unetbootin to put the Ubuntu ISO on my USB drive. After installing, I disconnected the USB drive, and I was unable to choose the linux kernel option on the GRUB menu. When I do, my system just restarts and presents me with the GRUB menu again. However, windows 7 boots up perfectly.
I'm assuming that GRUB is somehow trying to boot the linux kernel from the USB. How do I change it to boot from the installation I made on my harddrive?

Feb 5, 20109.04 this morning updated my kernel to I believe it is 2.6.28.18 and upon the reboot I had no desktop. It booted wanting to go into low graphics.
So I drop to shell and stop the gdm and try to run the latest nvidia run file I have and it hangs saying I have a x server running.
Otherwise I am needing assistance with getting my desktop back! I can boot into an older kernel and if need be I would like to roll back that latest update this morning, but once again I am forgetting the command line for that.

All went OK but I had two boot loaders, i.e. turn on laptop and I would get the Windows loader asking if I want to boot in to windows or Ubuntu. Upon selecting ubuntu I would get the standard grub loader that I have on my PC. Did an update a few mins ago and it asked me to update grub which I did and as there was only one disk showing clicked forward. Now on reboot I have grub rescue prompt, no such device. Hard drive is a single 80 gig drive with windows on one partition and ubuntu in another. Have the live cd so can boot from that I guess. What do I do next?

The lights on the keyboard were flashing on and off as well. When I try to boot, all I get is a black screen and flashing lights. The Ubuntu recover also has the same thing. Jan 7, 2010This has to be the sixth time I am going to have to reinstall Ubuntu (Can't get enough of that Linux greatness) in the past 6 months. I just don't understand what exactly is wrong, I don't install anything extra (but the ubuntu restricted extras) yet updates that ask me to reboot will take me to a GRUB command line screen and trying to boot through the command line interface gives me an, "Invalid Magic Number", error.
There should be an official tool for when problems like this come up, so that users like me can easily move their files off their HDD before reinstalling. I didn't come here to rant but, does anyone know what may be causing this everytime, how it can be avoided maybe even how to deal with the Magic Number error and boot in (I wouldn't mind typing in the commands every time BTW)?

Apr 5, 2010i have installed ubuntu 9.10 on my hp nx6325 notebook, and everything was working just fine, then it updated and problem started coming up. First the computer wouldn't reboot after the update, blank screen, then i manually reboted and now some programs don't work (ubuntu software center, update maneger, avant window navigator)
i assume the update did some damage, so how can i repair this, is there a recovery tool or something.
Fedora Installation :: Got An Update That Installed, And After A Reboot One Core At 100%
Aug 12, 2009I just got an update that installed, and after a reboot I've got one core at 100%. The "you need to restart" icon in the notification tray said "glibc glibc glibc glibc nscd". Now that I look at it, It's switching between both cored. This behavior is consistent over multiple full reboots as well as kexec reboots.
Edit: Strange, just when I finished, the CPU load settled out and now everything is fine. I wonder what was going on. I'm rebooting right now to double check. Edit2: Yep, same issue 100% usage on one core. And it probably will level out soon. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I assume that glibc could be the issue.

Jul 24, 2010i tried to update on my computer when i first got it and my mouse stoped working then when my friend tried to update his it got incredibly jacked up and skiped windows boot loader and went straight to grub recovery we had to reformat the hardrive that ubuntu was on to even get it to boot to windows please help or should i just not update while using wubi? i plan on reformating in a little bit and just running windows in a virtual box for the things on windows i still use i thing everything can be happy with 3 cores and 4 gigs of ram on each side of the box right? and should i know anything about running my games through a box like will it nerf my grafix cards ability?
