View 14 RepliesIt appears that the update process on or about 2011.04.28 downloaded and installed a non PAE kernel (kernel-2.6.35.12-90.fc14) on my box. Until this update, it has been installing PAE designated kernels. When this update occurred, it downloaded the PAE headers and debug, devel and debug-devel PAE components. Has anyone else noticed this in their update?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am unable to boot with kernel 2.6.35.13-92.fc14.x86_64 which was installed while applying software updates. It hangs with the last message issued "Registering binary handler for Windows Applications". Searching led to it being related to a problem with the nvidia drivers. I followed the directions in several posts - delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf, reboot, run nvidia-xconfig, reboot and all is fine, but not in my case. The first reboot works but the screen is wrong. There is a 1 inch wide black border around the presentation window. If I then do the nvidia-xconfig and reboot, i am back to where I was before - boot hangs after issuing "Registering...". If I boot to the last good kernel, everything works fine. This happened to me once before and I was able to fix it by rebuilding the nvidia kernel (I think that was what I had to do), but I can't find out how to do that. I have akmod and kmod installed which are supposed to take care of this problem. I booted to kernel 13-92 recovery mode, deleted the xorg.conf file and ran nvidia-xconfig from there. Still fails. I don't know what to list here, but I will do my best to supply whatever is necessary.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've managed to get some sound through the system with kernel 2.6.40.1. I use multiple sound cards, I have problems with keeping the same order. I added in etc/modprobe.conf The list of sound devices, putting my D66 card as device 3, Rebooted and cat /proc/asound/cards showed all fore devices in the correct order. I got audio through one of the apps , and started to try and get another ,wsjt, to function.

I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try?

How do I restore my previous version? I know some people have suggested in the past - just modify the grub.conf but how? When I boot off the cd I only get access to the liveuser disk. I need to have access to my own /boot/grub/grub.conf file.
My main systems runs Fedora 14 x64 with the latest updates (I can't check anymore, but I believe it has the .13.91 x64 kernel). Since this afternoon it became unsuable. First, Opera Browser crashed and the crash report app of the browser showed up. Clicking one of the options there resulted to X crash, if I understood what really went on. No input, mouse or kb, I couldn't go to tty etc. I had to do a hard reset. Next boot proceeded normally up to the point that GNOME desktop is fully loaded. ABRT began reporting numerous kernel oops.
Rebooted again (noticed that init.d fails, so hard reset again) and tried past two kernel versions, same results.
Yum crashes and so does everything. I tried to revert all recent updates with yum history, but yum crashed.
Last update was May 22, and it updated kmod-nvidia.

I just tried to update to kernel 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10 (x86_64) at the suggestion of the gnome update widget, and the process hung. A bunch of other things were updating at the same time, many of which were related to audacity or wine.
I'm not sure just what was being updated, because the option to review which updates are available does not work - when I click on it, nothing happens, but when I take the other choice (install all updates), I take pot luck. It would be nice to be able to choose which programs to update, and to be able to upgrade the kernel independently, but I don't seem to be able to do that at the moment.
Keep trying update the packages (36 in total) and every time I keep getting this error

I have a PC installed with FC 14:AMD 9500 Quad Core4GB RAM2x ATI X1950I've been using FC14 for a few weeks after updating from FC13.The graphics driver was a default one, it worked but it would only recognise one of my screen cards and I wanted to install the ATI Catalyst software so I began the process of installing the proper drivers.I followed the howto at: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=155503 Once I'd finished the driver seemed to be sort of working but everything was going really slow. If I moved a window it'd take a while to redraw in the new position, menus took ages to pop up, and so on.
I tried running aticonfig and got an error message (unfortunately the only record of it is on the machine I can't access properly). I put the message into a search engine and found a bug stating the same message where people had the same problem with Nvidia and intel cards too.The problem was something to do with python and how it started up the drivers (sorry I can't remember the message). The bug had an rpm attached that was a patch to fix this problem (I'm blabbing on in case any of this jogs the memory of someone that had this problem or worked on it).I installed the patch and rebooted and now Fedora gets as far as the black screen where a progress bar fills in white at the bottom of the screen but it stops there. Once the bar is completely white it sits there and gets on further no matter how long I wait.Does anyone know how I can recover this system? Is there a way of getting the system to recreate xorg.conf before this stage and load using the default driver again? The point it's hanging at is the point where it would normally bring up the graphical progress bar then the login screen.
The audio stopped working since I upgraded my kernel from 2.6.35.6-45 to 2.6.36.6-48.
Is reinstalling alsa / pulse the only option ?
I am experiencing sound problems after an upgrade to kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i686.PAE from kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.i686.PAE in several games like Neverwinter Nights (linux binaries) and Warcraft III (PlayOnLinux). The sound stops and changes into a very choppy annoying sound. When I boot into the old kernel the problems are gone.

I just responded to a (packagekit?) prompt to update packages, which included new kernel 2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64. I use nVidia on my notebook and usually the new driver is installed automatically. This time, the computer would not boot to the stage that the nVidia logo appears, indicating the driver is not present. I edited grub.conf to take me back a version and I am now running under the previous kernel 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64. I tried a yum search for kmod-nvidia-2.6.35.12-88.fc14.x86_64 and nothing was found. I have enabled these repos:

there are a few more lines like te last one. I've tried a rescue disk but no good. is my box toasted for good? I've used a live cd and can still the data on the box, is there any way to resue this situation? or is it run live cd backup the data and do fresh install?
I tried this kernel released on Dec 21th. It makes my F14 constantly suddenly freeze in GUI with no keyboard/mouse response anymore before restart. Only thing to do in this situation is press power-off button and after restart I found no hint in logs.My laptop is thinkpad t400 and I think it's a very common installation. Now I revert to older kernel 2.6.35.9-64.fc14.i686 and it's works quite well.

I just built some machines with the Intel 82574L gigabit ethernet chip, loaded Fedora 14, and discovered a problem with the e1000e driver dying after a few minutes. also frimware is installed ,gstreamer as well the sound is not on mute and it was working on the previous kernel .
Today, I installed the recent kernel security update (i.e. 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP). After a reboot, the sound is gone.
From my user account:
mpc@awd:~$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
Same problem with "aumix".
However, the commands "sudo alsamixer" and "sudo aumix" seem to work (but still no sound).
"lsmod | grep snd" will give

I just updated my kernel from 2.6.32-21 to 2.6.32-22 today. Now I am getting no sound. I have checked my mixer levels with both kmix and alsamixer. Nothing appears to be amiss. I tried rebooting with the old kernel and still no sound.
