Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Update To 2.6.32-22 Broke My Sound / Get That Back?

Jun 4, 2010

I just updated my kernel from 2.6.32-21 to 2.6.32-22 today. Now I am getting no sound. I have checked my mixer levels with both kmix and alsamixer. Nothing appears to be amiss. I tried rebooting with the old kernel and still no sound.

Ubuntu :: Last Kernel Update Broke My System Too

Feb 7, 2010

Firstly my gdesklets have gone, and if I try to run gdesklets then I get a blank window in the top left corner, followed by another blank window in the centre which disappears, then the first one fades to gray.

Secondly, clicking the 'running man' to exit just closes both gnome panels.

Ubuntu 8.04 (2.6.24-25)I know 8.04 is pretty old now, and I should probably start over, but it was all fine until this latest update.

Ubuntu :: Kernel Update Broke Fglrx 10.6/10.7 On 10.04

Nov 25, 2010

Posting from my Windows 7 system. Once again an Ubuntu kernel update has broken X. Once again I cannot get into Grub2, despite putting in the hacks to lengthen the time it listens. I don't need instructions on how to fix it from Live CD. I'm going to try Gentoo or something, anything, different. I need a Linux distro that can survive regular updates and boot to desktop reliably.

Ubuntu :: Kernel Update Broke The Nvidia?

Jan 29, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and ran the normal weekly updates last night. There were kernal updates listed but they have run alright before so I went ahead and let everything update.

On restart my Nvidia drivers would not load, so I restarted in low graphics mode. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver (with the intent of reinstalling them) but decided to restart before I reinstalled the driver (windows habit). upon restart I was told (in a very small box) that Ubuntu was running in low graphics mode.

I clicked ok and it proceeded to load, but it loaded it in regular mode and only the right half of the desktop is visible! It is like it is cut totally in half! And I can't get to the important side with Admin and Preferences. I tried boot options but that just gets me a very small colored box. There are no options when it boots just 3/4 of a box that says it is running in low graphics mode because "unable to load module "fglrx" module does not exist". I can not try and reinstall the Nvidia drivers because I can't see the part of the desktop that has Admin on it. I have used Ubuntu for several years now but have not used the terminal very often.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.10 Broke Surround Sound - No 5.1 - Only Stero

Nov 7, 2010

I upgraded my ubuntu installation from 10.04 to 10.10, now surround sound (5.1) does not work in xbmc, or in another player such as vlc. Only the front two speakers work. I noticed pulseaudio and alsa are installed. I thought i removed pulseaudio once before but cant really remember. In the sound configuration preferences thing (prefs >> sound), i have hdmi output selected (hdmi goes from the HTPC to the amplifier). It only plays audio in 2.0 instead of 5.1. I tried selecting the analog 5.1 sound option, but none of the test sounds work. However i noticed vlc still played movies with audio, but only stero no 5.1.

Previous to the upgrade, i had 5.1 working fine in xbmc, never bothered to check vlc since it was all good. Also, when i go into alsamixer, it does not show any rear speakers, it just shows a front speaker and a bunch of other stuff, like headphones. I'm not sure what other output you guys need, but let me know and i'll get it. Here is the alsa-info.sh output for my HTPC: [Code]..... Another note, after i reinstalled pulseaudio the first time, vlc fails to display a 5.1 movie and still plays tero output.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: 11.4 - Kernel Update Broke Wireless

Aug 3, 2011

I just performed the newest kernel update to version 2.6.37.6-0.7 (desktop). Unfortunately, there is no update for the compat-wireless package available. It's still the version for kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5. Hence, my wireless is currently not working and I had to pull a cable through my apartment to write these lines. I actually thought due to the change of the very last digit in the kernel version that this should be a rather safe update. But I also had to recompile the modules of the NVidia driver and of Virtualbox. Does anyone has an idea when new compat-wireless modules will be available? Or do I have to re-compile them myself (I never had to do that before and I really hope that I don't have to)? Or is there a trick to make the old modules work?

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Upgrade To 2.6.32-23-generic Broke My LVM - RAID And GRUB

Jul 4, 2010

I recently updated the kernel to the newest version(2.6.32-23-generic) using the update manager and now I am unable to boot in to my Lucid installation.

My setup is LVM on top of a RAID 0 array. My computer had been running in this configuration since Lucid was released.

The Error Code I get on Boot is to the effect of: /dev/mapper/ubuntu-os is not available.. and then I get kicked in to Busy Box.

Once in Busy Box if I try to use mdadm to mount the RAID array I get this error:

If I boot in to the live CD I can mount all of the partitions and LVM volumes, so it does not appear to be a failed drive or volume.

I have looked in the mdadm.conf, lvm config and grub config files and searched the "Google" for an answer with no-avail...

Ultimately I would like to find a solution which doesn't involve a re-installation.

Ubuntu Installation :: Recent Update Broke Firefox / Reinstall It?

Apr 8, 2011

RE: Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64bit Updates from 2-3 days ago.

Since then, Firefox starts and runs fine the first time. Close it down and later try to restart, error says that Firefox is already using that profile and will need to quit it before proceeding.

System Monitor then shows that firefox and firefox-bin are still loaded (although nothing in the gnome app tray at bottom of screen). Jill those 2 processes and Firefox loads normally.

Should I wait this out and see if later updates cure this? Reinstall Firefox? Submit a report to launchpad?

Where my normal login screen usually appears a different login screen appears with my username. I login. Screen flickers black for a few seconds and a page with a ton of text shows up for a fraction of a second ( too short of a time to read a single word). more flickering. Then I am returned to the slightly different login screen once again with the error. I tried booting into failsafeX gui mode. Same issue.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Heavy Sound Lags After Kernel Update?

Jul 17, 2011

After I upgraded from kernel 2.6.32-31 to 2.6.32-32 and then 2.6.32-33, my sound started to lag(the lag occurred on 2.6.32-32 and stayed to 2.6.32-33, but it worked perfectly ever before). Sound does work in itself, but frequently lags and pieces that were already played before will be played again, pretty much like an old vinyl that occasionally jumps or hangs. When I start to replay something, it does not put out anything for a second or two and then starts, when I stop it will keep playing for the exact same amount of time. So, sound is synced to videos(video replay works perfectly well and without the lag). Problem is definitely related to the sound drivers, not to replay software or any buggy file. It occurs with DVDs, Flash Videos in Firefox, music in gmusicbrowser, movie files with VLC, whatever you want. I never experienced such problems with any kernel before. Although I've seen many others posting similar problems, I cannot see any valid solution for myself.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and I sure don't want to go to 10.10 for the second.

I reinstalled Alsa and Pulse, no joy. My sound card is recognized correctly by alsa and can be found in aplay -l. It's a generic onboard surround sound device, although I only use stereo channels.
