Ubuntu :: Start-up Manager Only Shows 2 Out Of 4 Tabs?
Jul 22, 2010
I have a memory leak, thus, I need to run memcheck-memtest86. I run ubuntu 10.04 lucid and my GRUB is 2 (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu7). I have been told that to run it I have to, when booting the system, select it from the GRUB menu and use the OS as I usually do so memtest can show the leaks that annoy me.
Problems so far: in system-administration-startup-manager I can only see 2 tabs (boot options and advanced), while in the following webpage [URL] there are another 2 that I cannot see in my machine (security and advanced). Why does that happen? The idea is that I can configurate the boot menu with the startup manager, right? with the screenshot that I have uploaded, I have much less options. Again, why is that?

Here is a bunch of things I have tried and the results.
nixon@nixon-desktop:~$ sudo ifup wlan0
Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.
nixon@nixon-desktop:~$ sudo ifdown wlan0
ifdown: interface wlan0 not configured

I installed Startup Manager but the appearance and security tabs are missing. I really want to be able to change the resolution of the splash screen cause it looks all pixelated and I want to have the splash screen that 9.10 had.
I tried reinstalling and restarting but the issue remains. I know its somewhat functional because I am able to change the seconds that grub takes but when I try to change the resolution of the purple ubuntu startup screen it looks like it tries to change it but it fails.

Firefox is sometimes slow opening new tabs/switching between tabs. If I click on the kickoff application launcher button, it takes a few seconds to open, and typing something in the search makes it hang up for about 20 seconds before it does the search. Clicking on an app takes 16 seconds before the menu window closes and the program begins to start. Then it takes another 30sec-1min before the app is usable. smplayer plays video with tearing.
Like right now I tried taking a screenshot, and it tells me
Error launching /usr/share/applications/kde4/ksnapshot.desktop. Either KLauncher is not running anymore, or it failed to start the application.
while the app worked fine.
I also tried running glxgears right now, and it runs but the gears don't move, and terminal states
15 frames in 19.0 seconds = 0.789 FPS
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 48 requests (48 known processed) with 15 events remaining.
If I'm on dolphin, and I click a video to start smplayer, it takes about 1 minute for it to start.
Memory is using 1.4GB out of 3.6GB, with 0.08GB/2GB swap
Top shows an average usage of less than 10% average. Xorg is always 25%, kwin is always 10% and then rest of the apps are less than that.
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 620 Processor
Integrated VIdeo: HD4200 with fglrx driver
When I ssh into the computer with x tunneling, the programs start up faster than being on the desktop

I have a relatively new dual core 64 bit dual install Win XP/10.04 system. At first I was able to run quite a number of browser (Chrome and Firefox) windows simultaneously in different desktops without much in the way of problems save the occasional reboot every few days to let the machine clear it's head. Lately when I reboot, it runs fine for a few (1-6) hours, but then one or more of a few of the tabs start "spinning" in the tab showing that they are refreshing and a popup comes up saying that the program isn't responding, and asking whether I want to wait or force close.
If I choose wait, and go to those tabs, and hit the stop button, it changes to a refresh button but the tab still shows that it is attempting to connect/refresh/whatever it is doing, and the popup returns every few seconds. I.e., it is ignoring the "Stop". I am now only running a few browser windows which is a much lighter load than the multiple windows before. I have reinstalled both Firefox and Chrome without any improvement. There doesn't appear to be any pattern to the ones that start doing this, but once started any new tab will often fall into the same problem. when I boot up, just after selecting the OS I want, a message flashes up (white print on black)saying: What is causing this behavior? What can I do to solve it? What information would be helpful to you? Do I need to reinstall Ubuntu?

I'm upgrading my machines UDTE-64 from 9.10 to 10.4LTS. 9.10 is working fine. I just want to upgrade to a current LTS release.Update manager showed the way on one desktop and I upgraded successfully. On another desktop and a laptop, update manager does not show that a new release is available. It's fair game to tell me to use the live cd so long as I preserve user data.

I've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?

I've installed ubuntu 10.04 on a hp mini 110. I've used netbook remix on this same computer and had no problems with a wireless connection. In this case, network manager shows wireless disabled. I have installed the Broadcom B43 Wireless drive from Adminstration->Hardware drivers. No help! ifconfig does not
show eth1 and lspci tells me that the Broadcom BCM4312 Network controller is present.

My network connection is working fine, but the Network Manager in the system tray shows "no network connection."
When using the live dvd, and during the install, it showed that it was connected.

Trying to run from the terminal returned this error: "Gst-Python couldn't be found!" I tried looking for the dependency, but couldn't find it in Software Manager.

The title of the thread says it all. Don't know why, the update manager keeps getting 0B of 1B since yesterday morning. Found some other references to this problem but couldn't locate an answer to this problem. Does anyone know the reason why I keep getting this? Don't know if there are any updates released since yesterday, but can't find anything with this message.

I just upgraded Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04 and am having a problem with the window manager. When I log in and after it applies my background and the panels load, the window manager doesn't start right away, so if I open a program it won't have a top to it. I have to turn on Compiz, which turns off every time I turn on the computer. If I set it to normal, it searches for drivers and then the tops of windows appear. I have had to do this every time since I upgraded. I would do a clean install, but I have no way to back up my data since I have so much. How can I fix this?

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and I have noticed an increase in loading time when logging in.What use to take less then 1 sec is now taking 3-4. It sometimes is able to start conky but most of the time it doesn't. When I manual run it after login in it has no problems starting. When I start a session with 9.04 I noticed it would go straight to fluxbox it would then take a few seconds to load conky and pidgin. When starting a session with 9.10 the loading seems to happen before the login manager passes control to fluxbox. When the login manager is finished pidgin is signed and ready, there is no more loading to be done.
Would removing the login manager and starting a session from the terminal be advisable? I only use fluxbox.

I have 10.04 installed on my HP MiniNote Netbook. If I plug it into the the ethernet directly, all is well, but if I only use the wireless, i get no DNS servers. And one of my wireless networks is on the same router as the wired connection. Also, wireless works just perfectly on my MacBook Air. So, I do not think it is the router. So why am I not getting DNS addresses? How would I set them manually? I can't figure out how to start network manager.

Recently i was fixing a permissions error on my home folder. In the process i ran accidentally chmod 777 in the root directory. BIG mistake. Now i cant run sudo, or start network manager. I am currently on vacation and made a bootable version ov ubuntu on my flash drive, but i wouldn't boot. I think it is because i chmod'ed the grub folder (with is in the root) I have a boot CD a home, but is there anyway to fix it beforehand?

I just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and now virt-manager won't start. If I try from the menu, nothing happens. If I try and start it from the command line (as root) it give the error:
GLib-GIO:ERROR:/build/buildd/glib2.0-2.26.0/gio/gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)Aborted
I've tried searching and can't seem to find anything related, but was hoping this might make some sense to someone.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 installed. When I try to start the Synaptic Package Manager it attempts to start and then quits. I have tried running it through terminal and get the following output.
roy@Bastard:~$ sudo synaptic
sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440
sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting
I get the same output for sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade.
