Dec 1, 2010I just ran the most recent updates on ubuntu, restarted my computer and now all that shows up is the Gnu Grub prompt.

Ubuntu :: Grub Prompt Appears After Update-grub?
May 6, 2011After certain system-wide changes, like kernels updates, I obtain grub prompt on restart. However, if I put the hard drive into another computer (b), it boots up fine. Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?

Aug 8, 2010Installed 10.04 on my daughters laptop from within windows Vista. All went OK but I had two boot loaders, i.e. turn on laptop and I would get the Windows loader asking if I want to boot in to windows or Ubuntu. Upon selecting ubuntu I would get the standard grub loader that I have on my PC. Did an update a few mins ago and it asked me to update grub which I did and as there was only one disk showing clicked forward. Now on reboot I have grub rescue prompt, no such device. Hard drive is a single 80 gig drive with windows on one partition and ubuntu in another. Have the live cd so can boot from that I guess. What do I do next?

Ubuntu :: Remove Grub 2 At Grub Rescue Prompt?
Jan 15, 2011So I wanted to get rid of ubuntu 10.10 on my HP pavilion dv6 laptop as I wanted to make some hd space. Its a dual boot with windows 7. I deleted the ubuntu partition and expanded the windows partition to fill the whole hard drive again. When I restarted my laptop I got the "error: no such partition. Grub rescue>" message.
I tried inserting my ubuntu 10.10 boot cd but whenever I boot from the cd I get the exact same grub rescue error. Is it possible to remedy this situation from the error? I am currently unable to download a windows recovery cd so I'm stuck in the grub rescue page unless its possible to fix this mess from the error prompt.
Software :: Grub Drops To Grub Prompt On Boot / But Can Use Commands To Find Menu
Jun 5, 2009I've got myself the curious situation where, when I boot the system, I can get grub to start, but it always drops to the prompt.
I can run:configfile /grub/menu.lst
and this brings up the menu with no problems, and from there I can boot the system to either linux or windows. What I don't understand is why it wont go to the menu in the first place?As far as I can tell, grub/Kubuntu got confused when installing, as each of the hd#,# settings in the menu.lst have needed tweaking to let the system boot. (e.g. windows is actually hd0, but the original install had it at hd2. Likewise linux is on hd1, but the menu.lst had it at hd0). I've happily tweaked these to make the system boot, but would appreciate any help in convincing grub to actually load the menu without me having to use the prompt.
CentOS 5 :: Grub Doesn't Automatically Boot OS After Install, Hangs At Grub Prompt?
Mar 21, 2011I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot

Apr 13, 2011I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.
Ubuntu :: Update Manager Doesn't Prompt When Update Is Available?
Jul 14, 2011I have Update Manager set to check for updates on a daily basis but to prompt me before downloading or installing them. Because I have Update Manager set to check on a Daily basis, I expect that I will receive a prompt that an update is available no later than the day after the update is available (assuming of course I have my computer turned on). Yet I only receive a prompt days or even a week after the update was made available.
For example, let's say that my PPA of Google Chrome issues an update on Tuesday. Despite the fact that my ubuntu computer was on for a couple hours in the morning on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, no update prompt appears alerting me to available updates. If I manually open Update Manager on Friday afternoon, then the update is there and waiting for installation. But how come I don't get an automatic prompt that an update is available? Do I have my settings wrong or something?

After I completed the install I get GRUB prompt and I cannot type anything. Sep 9, 2010I use wubi 10.04 installed on my xp drive. the other day my pc froze while surfing the internet. I used the following key combination to reboot my pc (this is the first time I'm trying it), but when I selected ubuntu, I don't get the grub boot menu, on the other hand, I get a little welcome message to the grub prompt and "grub>"How do I fix this and boot into Ubuntu?

The sequence of grub shell commands to be entered are these: set root=(hdX,Y) linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sdZ ro initrd /initrd.img bootwhere the X, Y, and Z are replaced with appropriate letters/numbers.
The problem that I am having is that TAB is not completing the commands at the grub shell, thus I have no idea what the letters/numbers to use.
My installation is completely generic - I have not customized it in any way. check their vmware/Ubuntu system and let me know what letters/numbers to use.

Jul 22, 2010I have a memory leak, thus, I need to run memcheck-memtest86. I run ubuntu 10.04 lucid and my GRUB is 2 (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu7). I have been told that to run it I have to, when booting the system, select it from the GRUB menu and use the OS as I usually do so memtest can show the leaks that annoy me.
Problems so far: in system-administration-startup-manager I can only see 2 tabs (boot options and advanced), while in the following webpage [URL] there are another 2 that I cannot see in my machine (security and advanced). Why does that happen? The idea is that I can configurate the boot menu with the startup manager, right? with the screenshot that I have uploaded, I have much less options. Again, why is that?

Oct 30, 2010I rebooted my computer recently after installing some updates in Ubuntu and now when grub launches it goes straight to the grub prompt and I don't get a menu. I tried searching around online and have tried what seemed like the most common fix but to no avail:
find /boot/grub/stage1 (returns hd1,0)
root (hd1,0)
setup (hd0) -I also tried (hd1,0) and (hd1)
-then reboot- (still get no menu and goes straight to the prompt)
I then tried booting into Ubuntu live, using apt-get to install Grub, and then running through the install process using similar commands, but to no avail. When I run setup it finds my config info and doesn't show any errors. I have a menu.lst file with lots of entries for different kernel versions and a windows 7 install on hd0,0. I am running Ubuntu Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-25-generic-pae.

Mar 12, 2011I'm having a issue. It first started a few nights ago, and after booting from the live cd and reading around, I saw it mentioned somewhere that it might help to update GRUB. I did this using sudo update-grub. This took care of the issue, with an unexpected, but not altogether unwanted result: instead of having to choose a temporary boot device to boot on to the external drive Ubuntu is on, I got a grub menu which showed the the OSs for both HDDS. I thought all was fine, but a few days later, same thing. Updated grub again, and all was okay. Tonight, it happened again.
When I try to update grub now it says:

Another thread suggested typing 'exit' after a while but it just repeats the same output. It seems the root disk doesn't exist. I allowed the installer to set up partitions to its own recommendation (Guided?) although I'm not entirely sure what it did - I think there are two partitions but you guys will know that. The host disk is SATA. The CPU is a dualcore but I've only enabled one CPU on the guest within Virtualbox. Also, I had to enable PAE mode as without it Virtualbox crashed every time I started the guest. PAE wasn't mentioned in the instructions mentioned above. I've tried changing the various other disk parameters in Virtualbox (without fully understanding them) but no luck. I also ran run the boot info script from a desktop LiveCD and the results are given below.

Ubuntu :: No Longer Asked For Password/keyring Prompt At Start-up?
Sep 1, 2010Been having trouble connecting to the internet and i am no longer being asked for password/keyring prompt at start-up. Something the prompt comes up 5-15 minutes after start-up.
I even manually set 'password at login' but it doesn't even ask me for that?

i found something about Avahi potentially causing a conflict with network configuration - so i typed the following command and am now online at least:
sudo stop avahi-daemon
sudo sed -e '/^start/,+1s/^/#/' /etc/init/avahi-daemon.conf

Jul 23, 2011I ran apt-get update to fetch firefox5. I didn't updated ubuntu since long so it down loaded around 280 updates including firefox. Now while installing I saw once EULA acceptance message for Microsoft ttf font installation, this message window doesn't have any button etc to confirm, so I did ctrl+c to exit, and then "apt-get" seems to have terminated in terminal.But I checked that it is still running in the background in process list, not sure active process or not.
I did rebooted PC assuming update might have completed. Now after reboot it boots up to the login prompt, but I don't see any cursor movement or key stroke effect. It just stays there and then after some time shuts down, with flashing error message relate to "Init.." i couldn't read it completely.
