Have recently tried to start ubuntu with kubuntu-desktop, but as I reboot my computer kubuntu only shows the terminal after the login and I cant get my desktop back.
View 1 RepliesWhenever I logoff my workstation, I log back on and my desktop doesn't come back. Only the mouse pointer and the wallpaper show up. The panel and the shortcuts don't show. I have to power off using the power button, then power back on to fix.

Today when I logged in as normal, instead of taking me to the desktop I get a white console on the top left corner with the normal login background. I typed 'sudo X' but it says the server is already active for display 0. Please advise what I can do. I am reasonablyew to Linux so apologies if this has been discussed before (but I couldn't find any info here or on google).

I can SSH into my home computer (Ubuntu 9.04 running Gnome) from work (Win XP Pro) using RealVNC via Putty tunnels. This has been working flawlessly for me for awhile now. I was messing around in the terminal window and accidentally rebooted the linux box (home computer) while I was at work. No big deal I thought. So I re-start the Putty connection, and it is back up in no time. Then I try to start the VNC connection, and no go, connection refused. I remember seeing that in order for the VNC connection to work, I had to be logged into the Gnome desktop already on the Ubuntu box.
Question:
Is it possible to log in and start up a Gnome desktop session from the terminal command line in Putty so I can get the VNC connection back?
I am running openSUSE 11.1 + KDE 4.2.I wonder where is the desktop button, which minimized all currently opened applications and brings you back to the desktop?
Please could someone let me know how or what do I need to insert to the control panel?
I have it configured in the application settings to do that, and I've checked the Startup Applications and indeed it is listed there.However when I start up the icon doesn't appear in the tray and my wallpaper won't change every 10 minutes like it's supposed to until I actually go to System > Preferences and run Desktop Drapes manually.

3-4 days ago update of ubuntu required restart of Ubuntu (linux kernel was updated).
After 3 days (i.e. yesterday) I restarted the system. I found that flashlib in Chrome became to work unstable, some artefact appeared, and only scrolling down-up in browser allowed to update view of screen. I run update manager. It showed ~88Mb of updates for last 3 days.
After download of updates, apply changes was failed! I faced this first time (!). I remember message like "can not synchronize file /usr/share/..." or something like that.
I restarted ubuntu again. Now I could not login. System hangs after login. No Gnome menu appears etc.
I tried to fix issue using dpkg. I found that some lib (ure) related to OpenOffice was not assigned (version XXX required, but bersion XXXY found). dpkg offered to solve this by some combination. I did so. Then I run dpkg update, and no errors appeared.
Also I updated VirtualBox to version 3.2.4, updated VirualBox Additions via console terminal in ubuntu.
But still I can't fix problem with gdm/gnome.
dpkg-reconfigure gnome-*** did not help for me.
I tried to check logs, but I have not found something "interesting".
At the moment terminal is the only way to login.

I found many suggestions and finally decided to use the Sessions->Startup Programs option (under System->Preferences->Personal->Sessions menu). I added my script in the Startup Programs with the command 'sh myscript.sh'. Now I have two questions here:1. When I use the command 'gnome-terminal -e myscript.sh', I get 'There was an error creating the child process for this terminal' message after logging into the desktop. Can any one tell if I am missing something here?2. Even if I use sh instead of gnome-terminal, I still want to see the script executing. In other words, my script has certain echo statements indicating the flow of the script. But I don't see any shell opening up with these echo statements showing up, after the unit boots to desktop. But the script was still executed with no problem

The problem is that if I logon from computer 1 and open some programs, I don't see these programs when I logon from computer 2.I logon with the same user, so I find this strange. This is problematic since I often wish to type words containing at least one "D" in it. In case anyone else is having this problem, I've wrestled through it and offer this help.I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meercat and connecting via Xrdp. I only have this problem when connecting remotely.
APPARENT CAUSEI don't pretend to know for sure, but the problem appears to be that the remote connection is flubbing Metacity's "<Super>d" binding for the "show desktop" command. More precisely, the string "<Super>" doesn't appear to be functioning for me. If I change <Super> to <Ctrl>, I can use Ctrl + D to show desktop, and I can then type the letter D without it hiding every window from me.
Further evidence <Super> isn't working for me, if I change Metacity's "panel_run_dialog" global key binding from "<Alt>F2" to "<Super>F2" I bring up the run dialog by hitting F2 alone.
WORKAROUNDChange the system's "show desktop" keystroke. Here are the steps.
1) Alt+F2
2) gconf-editor
3) /->app->metacity->global_keybindings
4) Change the assigned keystroke for show_desktop from "<Super>d" to "<Ctrl>d" or "<Ctrl><Alt>d" or "disabled"
If someone finds this worthy of submitting a bug ticket, please let me know so I can follow it.
I was running kubuntu 7.10 from 2007 till two days back. Thought it quite old, so wanted to upgrade from 7.10 to 9.10, and if I like the latest kde 4 (since I've not used it yet), the plan was to use the lucid lynx. The two phase upgrade from 7.10 -> 8.04 -> 9.10 went seamlessly without any hitch.
But now the problem started to occur, and I will point them one by one:
1. While booting, the startup splash screen falls into a console which read "checking battery state ... DONE" and it stays there forever. So, I opened another terminal by ctrl-alt-F1, gave my login id, password, type startx to go into the graphical mode.

I Also tried the other suggestions like restarting the kdm and dpkg-reconfigure. But the problem still exist.
Now I see, that the console is not stucking at check battery state message , rather its going to the tty1 and asking for the login/password.

Now, I don't have Nvidia graphics card installed, so can I safely remove whatever lists in Synaptic searching with 'Nvidia*' ?
2. I want to stop the notification/system sound for application, e.g. while closing a button in griffith or closing a window in pidgin the system emits a sound, I want to stop all these sounds, how to do that?
3. In kde3, I can search file under the present directory using konqueror, now I see konqueror has a search bar, but that is for web, not in the local file system. I am missing this very helpful feature of konqueror, can I somehow brought it back?
4. This issue is not 9.10 specific but faced in 7.10 .. Whenever I try to play an audio cd the system just freezes. The only in error dmesg is

Is there a way to install KDE without the installation of kubuntu-desktop and the re-branding and changing of settings and themes that come with it? I would like to try KDE again, but don't want to see Kubuntu while I'm booting. Also, it seems that it adds a lot of bloat, being as I need a removal script to reverse the changes it makes.

It showed that on the live cd too. I then tried install Elementary OS. It installed and had the same result. Starting up today my usually completely free of clutter desktop is showing all of my home directory folders!If I delete folders from the desktop, they are also deleted from my home directory. If I create a new home directory folder, it also appears on my desktop. In effect my desktop has become my home directory and I don't like it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit today and I installed Adobe Air with no problems. I then installed the Pandora Desktop application and that installed fine as well. After the installation I saw a "do not enter" style sign in my status bar on the desktop. When I hover over it it's telling me an application has a broken installation. When I go into Synaptic and filter for broken I see "com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098a d95535ee674.1" is showing broken. The description is just <> <>. Both Adobe Air and Pandora are working fine, and I'd be happy to ignore this warning except it's going to break my updating because it throws a warning every time.
Does anyone know how I can see what is apparently broken with the install or how I can suppress this message? I had the same versions of software running on 10.04 just fine before I formatted, and I'm the only person on the internet with this problem so far.I've gone over dependencies several time and don't see anything missing.
