Debian Installation :: No Network-Manager - Pull Up The Terminal And Enter A Command To Start?

Sep 1, 2011

I downloaded Debian Stable last night, and everything appear to go smoothly. Today, I booted up the new OS to try it out for the first time. As I was exploring a few of the features, I decided to pull up a web browser. No internet connection.

No big deal, I thought, as I searched around for a way to connect wirelessly. I couldn't find a way to do so. I consulted one of my more Linux savvy friends, who advised me to pull up the terminal and enter a command to start the network-manager. According to the terminal, no such file currently exists on my system.

This is a bit of a conundrum for me, since I am on my university campus with no ethernet cord to attempt a direct connection. Is there any way to get the network-manager onto my computer? Also, did I mess up somewhere in the installation, or did someone not package the file with CD1 for some unknown reason?

Ubuntu Installation :: Results Of 'apt-get Update' Command Different Than Update Manager

Mar 24, 2011

I've run the command "sudo apt-get update" from terminal, showing no update to do.Then I've run the update manager (System-Administration-Update Manager) and it has shown an update (adobe flash).I thought that "apt-get update" command and update manager were the same... Why do I have different results ? Is something missing in my "sources.list" file ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Don't Ave The Terminal Output From The Update Manager?

Sep 29, 2010

I have searched a lot for solutions of this problem, but there seems to be no solution that works for me. It was time to update my installation... AS I have NEVER updated it. So I ran the update manager and launched updates. Many packages completed, but linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic (2.6.32-25.44) gave me a lot of errors. I don't ave the terminal output from the update manager, but I have info from apt-get install -f. I am using root account.

Code:

Ubuntu Installation :: Reset Update Manager To Start Updating Properly?

Apr 17, 2010

I am having problems with my newly upgraded 9.10 distribution that keeps locking up. I had started a thread on that but along the way, I noticed another problem with the Update manager. I posted the following text in the same thread but realized that I must start a newer thread since it has its own issues (so sorry if you see this text in my other thread).I had upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with ISO image and then to 9.10 with ISO image. In between, I did not reset anything in the Update manager (the upgrades were within one day of each other). Since the computer was connected to network during upgrades, I also let it fetch any newer packages as it needed them.

After the upgrade, I started having system lock ups and it requires hard boot. I tried to check for any updates using Update Manager. It reported that system was up-to-date. However, I noticed in the Settings that cdrom was selected in Sources (perhaps because I had upgraded with ISO image). I unselected the cdrom and tried to update the packages. Since I upgraded using ISO image, there is some problem here about recognizing the repository perhaps. Do you think my problem may have stemmed from upgrading twice using ISO images and not resetting the Update Manager in some fashion in between? Although the system did fetch upgraded packages during upgrades. How can I reset the update manager to start updating properly? Perhaps Authentication is an issue?Of course, I am still having trouble with lock up.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Wants A Command Line Verified?

Aug 27, 2010

I made a live USB memory stick / pendrive with Ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 using my desktop computer. I want to install / update my netbook that has no network function yet. I booted the desktop with the pendrive & ran update manager. I want to update the kernel so I will have the driver that will operate my netbook ethernet.Acer AOD260 has Ethernet Controller: AR8151 v1.1 Fast Ethernet, Atheros Communications & Network Controller: Broadcom 4727 (rev 01)and will not work from the current release of 10.04 (too new) but there are supposed to be drivers in the newer kernels.

Running Update Manager I get a box labeled "Debconf on ubuntu" & says "Configuring grub-pc". There is an entry box that says "linux command line:" & is empty. When I press the help button I get the message "The following Linux command line was extracted from /etc/default/grub of the 'kopt' parameter in GRUB Legacy's menu.lst. Please verify that is correct, and modify it if necessary. The installer is hanging, Preconfiguring packages ..., probably waiting for a response, but I have no idea what to do.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager / Software Sources / Synaptic Package Manager Not Working?

Sep 30, 2010

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.

I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
