May 25, 2010Similar problems to mine have popped up elsewhere, but none of the fixes seem to work (or I'm just too stupid). I tried to see what the people at Canonical and elsewhere came up with for Ubuntu 10.4 and, after the live USB checked out fine, I rather foolishly installed the OS on my Acer Aspire One D250 (1GB RAM), to run alongside Windows XP.
It booted up once, I think, and then no more. I believe the problem MIGHT be the Broadcom WiFi stuff, but I'm not sure. Anyway, booting Ubuntu leads to a blank screen with a blinking cursor... which doesn't appear to go away. Recovery mode worked once or twice (had to use ACPI=OFF at least once), then no more. It leads to the same thing: that perpetually blinking cursor.
What I would like is either a fix to get Ubuntu 10.4 launched, or some way to remove the OS and restore my netbook back to what it was. Unfortunately, the MBR fixes that are posted all over cyberspace are useless, as my hidden partition doesn't contain the rtmbr.bin file it needs to work (don't ask me why--I've already posted that question at the AAO user forum). So it seems a fix to launch Ubuntu is the only solution, so that I can at least set grub to launch Windows XP rather than Ubuntu.

May 5, 2010A few weeks ago I installed Ubuntu 10.4 beta on a pc. I upgraded it to 10.4 RC and 10.4 final release. I think it was after upgrading to 10.4RC that I started having a problem during startup. Here is what happens:
I turn the pc on the bootstrap process occurres, then the grub screen comes up I let ubuntu boot. For a few seconds I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. The Ubuntu splash screen flashes on the screen for maybe a second or two. Then I'm dumped to the command prompt on TTY1.
At this point I can log in with a username and password type startx and I'm at the ubuntu desktop. If I log off I'm back at the command prompt on TTY1. If I press alt-ctrl-F7 at the command prompt this is what I see, these are the last four lines of text: init: ureadahead-other main process (742) terminated with status 4

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Light Constantly Blinking On Compaq Presario CQ60 Laptop
May 13, 2010I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 laptop and have one of those wireless light indicators. For me the light glows orange when the wireless is OFF and blue when the wireless is ON. In Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) the light was always orange, even if the Wireless was on, but my wireless worked right out of the box so I was grateful for that, but since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) I've noticed that my wireless light alternates between orange and blue frequently and sometimes flashes madly when wireless activity is occurring.
I was wondering if there is a fix for this as it can get quite annoying, the light sometimes stays blue for a while but will ultimately keep going back to orange and vice-versa, my friend who also has a Compaq Presario CQ61 (Revised model of mine) has his wireless light constantly blinking orange and blue no matter what.The wireless itself works fine, I can connect to any wireless connection and use it without having to install anything else, so it does work out of the box, which again, I'm grateful for.The wireless adapter is a Atheros AR5001 Wireless network adapter. Do I need to install additional packages or drivers to get the wireless adapter to work properly?

Jul 3, 2010i installed ubuntu on my samsung x30 yesterday while connected to my external monitor. when i power on my laptop the samsung start up screen appears both on my laptop and monitor however as soon as ubuntu starts the laptop screen breaks into two solid colours, ubuntu only works on the screen.

Apr 25, 2009I'm trying to install CentOS 5.3 on a VMWare virtual machine running VMWareServe 1.0.4 build-56528. I have 8 virtual machines that are running some older kernel (RH FedoraCore 4) without any trouble. My system has an AMD Athlon XP 1800 processor and has 1G RAM. Every time during the installation after choosing skip media (I have already checked that the media is OK) I get a kernel OOPS and the capslock and scroll lock keys start blinking. My first guess was that this could be a ACPI issue, so I have disabled ACPI using the acpi=no boot option. The problem persists with the acpi=no option set. During the boot install process, I have seen some messages like this one
ACPI Exception (processor_core-xxxx): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [xxxxxxxxx]
I have searched for this issue and found a RedHat Bug 435653 that reports this same issue, but this report is somewhat old, so i think that this issue as already been fixed and reflected to upstream. I have tried also to install using the text mode installation, but the same problem. To further isolate this problem, i have avoided the hardware detection and this was the first time that i have overcome the first screen (test media screen), as i have choosen with the success the language and the keybord layout. After choosing the beyboard layout, the kernel OOPS shows up again. On the screen 4 (debug screen) I don't see any relevant messages.
Ubuntu :: 10.10 64-bit Shows 3.7GB Out Of 4GB RAM On Laptop With Dedicated Graphics?
Nov 10, 2010I'm accustomed to Ubuntu showing 3.9GB out of 4GB on my desktop. That's completely ordinary and expected: The kernel uses a dozen megs or so, which are not accounted for in the reported memory totals. After truncating, that brings us to 3.9GB.
I was expecting to see the same thing on my Elitebook 8740w, but System Monitor is reporting only 3.7GB instead, using the same version of Ubuntu. free -m shows:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3819 935 2883 0 80 287
-/+ buffers/cache: 567 3252
Swap: 4095 0 4095
That is to say, the total of 3819MB is not missing a mere dozen or so MB but a full 267MB from 4096MB! That's WAY too much to be accounted for by the kernel, so something else is going on!
Please note the following:BIOS shows the full 4GB, and so does lshw.

That is to say, I really do have 4GB RAM, my mobo and BIOS recognize it, I really am running a 64-bit OS, and I really shouldn't have any kind of onboard graphics.
The devil lies in the details though: I SHOULDN'T have any kind of onboard graphics...but the best explanation I can come up with is that 256MB or so are being set aside for that purpose anyway. This is a mobile workstation with dedicated Firepro graphics (based on the Mobility Radeon HD 5800), and it's well beyond the range of laptops that include switchable graphics. However, it has an i5 processor, so I think it's conceivable that the laptop is being tricked into allocating RAM for integrated graphics. This is especially likely considering I get the same i915 error as the threadstarter here, and I have very similar command line output.
Presumed Problem: Long story short, I think Ubuntu is seeing the i5 processor and setting aside 256MB or so for the integrated graphics which it THINKS I have, which are actually totally unavailable to use on this particular laptop. If this is the case, does anyone know how to make it stop doing this, so I can make that memory accessible to the rest of the system?
Update: Interestingly, even Memtest is showing only 3952MB. This may or may not account for the full missing amount, but it obviously counts for a lot. I'm used to Memtest showing I think 4095MB on my desktop, meaning Memtest itself presumably only takes ~1MB. Actually, even on the laptop Memtest says only 1024KB are reserved, so 143MB are totally unaccounted for.

Jul 2, 2010I'm a new user and recently installed ubuntu on an old samsung laptop, during the installation process i couldnt see anything on the screen and came to the conclusion that ubuntu's default resolution was different to that of the laptop screen so i plugged it into my TV and sure enough it worked however i still only have a picture on the tv, ive tried all the resolutions available in the 'monitors' box but nothing, does anyone know how to fix this?

Jun 20, 2010I am running Fedora 13 - 64-bit variety and using KDE as the gui. No real issues asides from machine not exactly flying, but then this is a mere core 2 duo 1.6 with 2 gigs of ram, so not unexpected...
When I run top I see 3 users indicated - which worries me somewhat... I am the only user on this machine.
I come from a Debian / Ubuntu /Gentoo knowledge-base and this laptop is a fresh install, encrypted partitions, temp has own partition (encrypted too) and obviously the firewall is on, with ssh service turned off and ssh access removed in the firewall....
is this 3 users in top normal, or have i managed to be hacked in the 3 - 4 days since I started the install ? In all this time I have been sitting behind a router when on the net.
Am I looking at a fresh install, or are there valid reasons for the extra users?
I just ran "users" in terminal and I show up 3 times - I have only logged in once, through the GUI and no extra access routes

Jul 22, 2010I have a memory leak, thus, I need to run memcheck-memtest86. I run ubuntu 10.04 lucid and my GRUB is 2 (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu7). I have been told that to run it I have to, when booting the system, select it from the GRUB menu and use the OS as I usually do so memtest can show the leaks that annoy me.
Problems so far: in system-administration-startup-manager I can only see 2 tabs (boot options and advanced), while in the following webpage [URL] there are another 2 that I cannot see in my machine (security and advanced). Why does that happen? The idea is that I can configurate the boot menu with the startup manager, right? with the screenshot that I have uploaded, I have much less options. Again, why is that?

May 9, 2011I got wireless printing working on my mom's computer... Then when I upgraded the laptop to 11.04 it wouldn't boot properly. It shows the Ubuntu splash and then switches to a console where I can see services starting and stopping. It freezes when it's going through this section of startup. I rebooted and started the machine in recovery mode, then selected low-graphics from the list. It works in low-graphics mode in Ubuntu Classic (my mom doesn't want Unity so I set Classic as the default)

Jun 28, 2010Have been running Karmic 910 for six months on a Dell Latitude D510 laptop with a Pentium M CPU, 2 GB of RAM and Intel 915 graphics, and I really like it, especially the Gnome desktop. However, a glitch occured after suspending, resuming, shutting down and trying to restart. Now after selecting Ubuntu in Grub the Ubuntu logo shows up onscreen, doesn't seem to pulsate, and eventually is replaced by an error message that the system gave up waiting for root device.
The LiveCD shows the Ubuntu partition as unrecognized, unknown or unused in Palimpsest Disk Utility, though Gparted shows it as normal ext4. The partition doesn't show up in Places. From the command prompt (via ctrl-alt-F1) I'm able to run fdisk, which shows the partitions but am unable to mount the Ubuntu sda4 partition - the error message is that the file type must be specified.
Starting recovery mode in Grub brings about 25 lines of startup messages, mostly dealing with usb devices, but a few render errors are there too. The last message before dropping to the ash shell is that a device could not be found. (ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/5cee... does not exist.) The ash commands are completely new to me, so I haven't had any luck with recovery mode.
If the problem is related to Intel graphics, I would like to try some "quirks" (software fixes for hardware problems, including Intel graphics bugs) mentioned on the ubuntu.wiki site. I'd also like to recover the data on the desktop, but so far cannot get into the file system.
Does GRUB need to be reinstalled? If so, why?
Would reinstalling without formatting anything preserve the data?
Would upgrading to Lucid help prevent the problem from occurring again?

I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.
After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.
I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.
My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3
I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)

I already had Vista (and hated it), so I installed Ubuntu. It all went well, until I messed up something with the partitions (in Vista of course..). Then my laptop wouldn't start up and I got an error message ( I don't remember what it was.). So I installed Ubuntu again on another partition and it is all working now (both Ubuntu and Vista). But now I have a partition, of 15 GB I think, that I can't use for anything. I would really want that back. So my question is: Does somebody have an idea how I can fix that?

Apr 5, 2011I recently installed the 32bit version of 10.10 on my Dell Latitude E6510. Everything went smoothly.. in fact I was quite impressed as I have my laptop in a docking station connected to dual 24" displays. The installer recognized them and they worked perfectly right outta the box: yea for Ubuntu !
After the install, I installed some apps then upgraded the installation to the latest hotness - lots and lots of things were upgraded. I restarted the machine to "complete the upgrade process" and it boots but right when it gets to starting the Windows environment, both display just loose their signal...
It boots fine to the command line if I boot in safe mode. I had installed the nVidia drivers but I did that before the update and I had no problems until I did the system update. Any ideas? Should I start by disabling the 3rd party drivers? If so, how would I do that?
