May 29, 2010Currently Startup manager won't show all the tabs (appearance and secuirity) how do i get access to these tabs.

Ubuntu :: Appearence And Security Tabs Missing In StartUp-Manager Application
May 3, 2010I installed Startup Manager but the appearance and security tabs are missing. I really want to be able to change the resolution of the splash screen cause it looks all pixelated and I want to have the splash screen that 9.10 had.
I tried reinstalling and restarting but the issue remains. I know its somewhat functional because I am able to change the seconds that grub takes but when I try to change the resolution of the purple ubuntu startup screen it looks like it tries to change it but it fails.

Sep 14, 2010i just installed Ubuntu from an ISO about a year old and of course i updated it to the latest version and when i get that screen at startup where i have a choice of which version to load i get something like this: My current version, memtest, an old installation of Ubuntu and some really old versions. The problem is i also have Windows7 and Vista installed(vista really needs to go) but i don't have either of them as a choice in the bootloader. How do i get it back? Also before the update i had it on the list.

May 7, 2011I have a dual-boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04. Each OS is installed on a separate partition of one hard drive. I read that installing Windows after installing Ubuntu wipes out Grub, so I made sure to install Windows first. Unfortunately, after completing the Ubuntu install and rebooting, I see no sign of the Grub menu. I followed several sets of instructions for reinstalling Grub, and after running grub-update, it appears that Windows 7 was added to Grub, and after examining the grub.cfg file, it appeared that that was the case. Despite appearing to be installed perfectly once inside Ubuntu, Grub doesn't show anything at startup. No matter what I try, I can't seem to make Grub appear, and now I can't get back to Windows 7. Am I missing something, or should I try a different bootloader?

May 20, 2010I have a computer with pentium 3 that i'd like to run ubuntu 10.04 on. I've installed it from a livecd (the cd is fine, because i used that cd to install 10.04 on another machine, and its working perfectly). The installation went fine, and on the first boot everything worked fine as well. but when i tried it again, the computer started but at the desktop there were no panels on the top or bottom, although every thing else was working.
I could use Alt+F2 to run any application that comes preinstalled on the ubuntu cd including the terminal, but i can't access Applications, Places, System, etc.
Everytime at startup during boot there is a message that prints "error: no suitable mode found" "error :unknown command 'terminal'" (without the quotes).
this computer has a bit of a history as i once tried to install linux mint on it but failed because of a bad livecd. the grub got installed wrongly, tried to reinstall xp, didn't work, then ultimately after trying a few other things turned to DBAN, which surprisingly also failed crashing everytime i ran it before completing its erase, which leads me to believe that Dban didn't leave my hard drives in too good a condition. when the ubuntu live cd worked however i was ignited with a brand new spark of hope, and even that now is starting to diminish, is there no hope for my pentium 3.

Oct 12, 2010I'm encountering an unusual problem with GRUB 2. Whenever I start up my system, my BIOS'es load and do their thing, and then hand the show over to GRUB, which is supposed to not appear or do anything because my GRUB countdown is set to 0, but instead I get two errors like this that appear for about 5 or 10 seconds (greatly delaying startup) and then Xubuntu, the first entry on my Grub menu, loads: (I set GRUB to automatically boot my first entry):

Feb 21, 2011A little while ago I installed lubuntu 10.04 on a partition on my (somewhat) old sony vaio desktop. It's great, I do love it - only problem is that the DVD drive is not recognised - at least it doesn't show up in the file manager, and isn't listed when I do "ls -l /media".

Jun 8, 2010im just getting the hang of ubuntu 9.10, and then all of a sudden 10.04 comes over and screws everything up with the upgrade. i did the upgrade, and now the network manager wont show up in notification areas. any clue as to why? help is greatly appreciated. also, my machine does register that the drivers for wireless card is installed, and when i run lshw -c net command with sudo priveleges, it says it can detect networks, so im confused as hell.

Jul 3, 2010I have two wifi routers. If I stand next to the main one with my laptop I can connect and access the internet no problem. The other router is in my office, and the bridging is messed up, so while I see the essid and bssid using 'iwlist scanning' and nm-tool, I can't connect to it.
Now, my main router's signal still reaches to my office, just not as strong as the borked router in my office. I need to be able to choose which wifi network to connect to without wasting time walking between rooms. I added entries for both in network-manager, but it doesn't show them in the list when I left click the tray icon! How the do I connect to the network I want?

Jul 22, 2010I have a memory leak, thus, I need to run memcheck-memtest86. I run ubuntu 10.04 lucid and my GRUB is 2 (GNU GRUB 1.98-1ubuntu7). I have been told that to run it I have to, when booting the system, select it from the GRUB menu and use the OS as I usually do so memtest can show the leaks that annoy me.
Problems so far: in system-administration-startup-manager I can only see 2 tabs (boot options and advanced), while in the following webpage [URL] there are another 2 that I cannot see in my machine (security and advanced). Why does that happen? The idea is that I can configurate the boot menu with the startup manager, right? with the screenshot that I have uploaded, I have much less options. Again, why is that?

Mar 25, 2010Firefox is sometimes slow opening new tabs/switching between tabs. If I click on the kickoff application launcher button, it takes a few seconds to open, and typing something in the search makes it hang up for about 20 seconds before it does the search. Clicking on an app takes 16 seconds before the menu window closes and the program begins to start. Then it takes another 30sec-1min before the app is usable. smplayer plays video with tearing.
Like right now I tried taking a screenshot, and it tells me
Error launching /usr/share/applications/kde4/ksnapshot.desktop. Either KLauncher is not running anymore, or it failed to start the application.
while the app worked fine.
I also tried running glxgears right now, and it runs but the gears don't move, and terminal states

after 48 requests (48 known processed) with 15 events remaining.
If I'm on dolphin, and I click a video to start smplayer, it takes about 1 minute for it to start.

Top shows an average usage of less than 10% average. Xorg is always 25%, kwin is always 10% and then rest of the apps are less than that.
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 620 Processor
Integrated VIdeo: HD4200 with fglrx driver
When I ssh into the computer with x tunneling, the programs start up faster than being on the desktop

Oct 14, 2010Anyway since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 when I right-click on something and there is another menu in that menu, it doesn't show up for the first time!
for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!

Wanted to access the session manager, but when I scroll to System/Preferences, there is no entry for it, or for the startup programs manager. Also, I'm getting the following error when attempting to open the "windows" entry: Failed to execute child process "gnome-window-properties" (No such file or directory)
Did I somehow botch something in gnome which is now leading to the absence of the session manager as well as the inability to launch the "windows" manager?

Feb 4, 2011I'm a beginner with Linux. I'm using the version of Ubuntu 10.10 installed in a notebook HP Pavilion tx 2000 (Turion 64 x2). My Ubuntu is 32 bits.
I'm passing for the following situation:
When I turn on my notebook, if it is running on battery (even with the battery has 100% of charge), a login / password screen does not appear, and the screen goes dark and nothing more I can do (that I knew!). So I re-start the machine.
However, if the notebook is plugged into electrical energy (with or without battery), a login / password appears normally.
If, with the notebook plugged into electrical energy, I log in Ubuntu operating system, then great. After loaded the operating system, I can turn off electrical energy and the notebook works normally (only with battery). In other words, just the login screen that is with this electrical energy problem.

Oct 25, 2010I've been trying to setup Plymouth on Debian Squeeze, but have only been partially successful: Plymouth works with shutdown (i.e. I see Plymouth after I tell the computer to shut down), but not when I start up my computer (before it reaches GDM). In other words, Plymouth seems to work with my graphics, but for some reason does not show up at startup (not even briefly, as far as I can tell). Jul 26, 2009I've been upgrading all our servers from FC8 to FC10. One thing that is no longer there are the start up script messages, being replaced by the white and blue line at the bottom.
I like seeing the bootup messages when I reboot (rarely) to make sure nothing went wrong and not having to go into boot.log to check it.

Mar 29, 2010I am creating a custom distro of Ubuntu for a company, changing a few things to meet their needs. One of the things I would like to change is the splash screen, but for some reason the "appearance" tab does not appear in StartUp-Manager.
Splashy still has the bug where it can't be installed due to a conflicting package in Ubuntu, so I believe that this is the only way to do it.
Running 9.10 (the system i'm trying to change) on a dual boot configuration with 10.04 as my main OS.

When I go to open up the file manager, nothing comes up. Even when I try nautilus or sudo nautilus nothing happens. I read on another forum to use gconf-editor and nothing fixed it. What do I do?
