I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?

By default in Lucid, Gnome Terminal is transparent.I was on my new Lucid install[1], in Terminal, typing away on the far side of some sshes, and reading some code, when I noticed how awkward it was to read because the background was showing through. "Fine", I thought, "I know where that setting is, although it's a strange default".But Terminal's "Edit Profiles->Edit->Background" revealed it was set to "Solid color". In fact, setting it to "Transparent background", and cranking the Shade up to Maximum was one way of removing the transparency.
A little hunting around revealed that "System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects" could be set to None instead of Normal, and that would fix the problem. So, your choices for a functional terminal are to disable all Compiz eyecandy, or to turn on transparency in order to turn off transparency.Does this strike anybody else as wrong? Is there another control I've missed?

The search function does not like "U3" so I cannot locate the latest in removing it. Has anyone figured out how to do so using Linux? (Explosive, maybe, but was the Stupix worm hidden in flash drives using the U3 tools?)

I recently learned how to add start up programs in the terminal using the following command:
Code:
ln /usr/bin/whateverprogram ~/.kde/Autostart
This worked, but now I want to remove some start up programs using the command line. Can someone point me in the right direction to what I need to do for this?
I'm assuming that default start up programs are not links in the ~/.kde/Autostart folder because when I run:
Code:
ls -a ~/.kde/Autostart
I only find the files that I have set to start up.

I have a flash drive that I used on my old netbook to temporally hold a copy of ubuntu as the netbooks internal drive was dead. I have since got a new netbook and wanted to return the flash drive to simple removable storage. I've re-partitioned it back to 14gb fat32 2gb ext2 and everything is working fine. Except that if I try to boot with the key inserted grub loads then errors imminently (sort of obvious if grub is still in the MBR but there is no menu.lst file anymore...) Googling for removal of GRUB just gives me loads of hits for how to restore windows mbrs when you dont want to keep linux anymore. None of these methods seem to have any targeting. I need to remove grub from sdb while keeping it intact in sda. sdb shouldn't even be bootable, so that when boot from usb is higher in the bios than boot from hdd the usb key is ignored and the hdd is booted as normal.

I'm having problems with the ubuntu software center. When I try to install any software it does nothing when I click the install button. I can click on the visit website page and download the source and compile it manually but I was under the assumption that you could use the install button and it would do it automatically for you. Am I wrong? I am running UNR 9.10 on an Acer Aspire One 110-1588.

I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 on two of my computers, one of them an upgrade and the other one was a clean install, both are having the same issue. When installing .deb files, the Ubuntu Software Center launches as usual although when I click install, the installation starts and it shows the progress bar for a very short time and then the progress just disappears as if the installation stopped. I'm not sure if the installation has actually stopped or if the Software Center is just not showing the progress. Applications that are in the Ubuntu Software Center database works just fine, only .deb files are giving this problem. I installed GDebi Package Manager (Ubuntu 10.04 used to install .deb files with this application) and I can install just fine using that. Is this an 11.04 bug? The issue occurs both in Unity and in GNOME.

In a desperate attempt to overcome frequent crashing accompanied by XLog lines that suggest to me that Pulseaudio is the cause, I removed Pulsaudio from my Ubuntu 10.4(LTS) using Software Centre. Now I cannot start up Ubuntu but I can get to Terminal via the Recovery Mode. My question is how can I use Terminal to re-introduce Pulseaudio so that I may get back to where I was, albeit with the random crashes that I have had for many months?

The following script will work when I type the path to the file I want to checksum, but not when I drag the file to the terminal because the linux terminal (unlike the Mac) automatically puts quotes around the file path, which causes an error. I did not find anything in gconf-editor or anywhere else to alter this behaviour, and my post in Launchpad is unanswered so far. (the script in itself is not very useful, I just stumbled upon this error when experimenting with bash).
So, is there a workaround for stripping the quotes from the input, or can I configure the terminal to not quote the input when I drag a file into it (which I would prefer?)I am currently logged in from Mac OS, but the question refers to ubuntu karmic with which I dual boot.ADMINISTRATORS: Thanks for the quick reply to my newbie question about posting new threads. Actually I don't see now what the difficulty was; I guess I was tired from trying to debug the above script (not funny).

I'm new to debian. I just installed Debian 6 via a single CD image. For some reason, I cannot find any kind of application that allows me to select software or install it. I've tried the instructions in many different threads on how to install software including synaptic package manager, software-center, etc. None of them seem to work or maybe there is something that I don't understand about this process in Debian.
I've used Ubuntu, openSuse, and !# so I am relatively familiar with terminal and installing software using different methods, but am not used to not having any kind of package manager to work with. I've downloaded "Software Center" for debian but terminal will not dpkg the package, advising errors. How to install some kind of package manager; "Software Center" or Synaptic would be preferable. I really want to try out Debian and get to know this operating system.

So I decided to try KDe, because why not? They have Kookies.[URL]However Terminal gave me an error, saying dependencies about odbcinst1debian2, saying that it depends on odbcinst but is not going to be insalled. So I went into Synaptic and manually removed these, then did the long command.Things got removed, reboot. Now Plymouth boots, but it stops at five orange dots (not moving) and then nothing. No login menu. I held down the power button and rebooted three times, all stuck at Plymouth.Yeah I can reinstall Ubuntu, I have the disk, but there are many configs that I did, that I do not remember.

While I can find my way around most things, terminals and desktop managers are different than I remember. One of the biggest problems that I am encountering today is that when running a gnome terminal (this is Suse 10.0 enterprise), I'm getting behavior in the window that I don't want. Specifically, when I type, my typing is underlined as if something is trying to spell check my window. Further, it seems as if when running vi or less, my keystrokes are only processed by these apps when I hit 'return'. I.e. if I'm running less and want to go back a page, I'll hit b, but nothing happens until I hit 'return'.
I seem to have tracked this down to the 'input method". Right clicking in the Gnome terminal allows me to set my input method to one of a dozen values. It seems that currently, it's set to "SCIM Input Method". If I then select 'default' or 'X Input Method', apps (i.e. things like less, vi, and even the bash shell) behave as I would expect.
a) what is this SCIM input method
b) how can I make it so that it is not the default?
I've poked around various configuration files in my home directory as well as in /etc, but I can't see to find how this is set.

I've tried ubuntu, and could never get my sound working with that, so I tried fedora and had the exact same problem there. After a few days of trying to figure it out I decided to give up because it was really getting ridiculous, and I just want to go back to windows where things simply work.
Now the problem is that when I boot from the windows XP install disc, it doesnt recognise anything on my harddrive and just gives me the blue screen when I press any key (after showing me the list of partitions on my harddrive, all of which are <UNKNOWN>). I'm not sure what the problem is but it must be something to do with the fact that I have linux installed, so is there any way I can completely remove Fedora and just start fresh with XP?The only 2 options that the XP install disc gives me are 1) Install windows XP (I get blue screen), or 2) Recover windows XP installation (I dont have xp installed anyway).
Likewise, booting from my Fedora install disc only gives me the options of installing or rescuing Fedora, but not the option of removing it.

I have a Sony VAIO VGN SR29VN with ubuntu 9.10; I am trying to make a wifi connection through WPA work, to no avail. WEP and open connections work correctly, but when I try to connect to a WPA network using TTLS via network manager, y get errors of this type:Current regulatory domain updated by AP to:ES
preceded by lots of "leaving channel xxxx intact" and followed by "disassociating by local choice".This Sony is using an Intel 5100 wifi; any idea of what's going on or how to fix it?

I've tried the bug-reporting tool in Gnome to no avail so far. This isn't a huge problem, more a cosmetic one. I'm running Squeeze beta 2, which was a fresh install. I have a Maxtor USB portable HD, which I use to back up personal data. It auto-mounts fine, as soon as I connect it. I have full read-write access from my regular user account; but when I'm finished accessing it, when I right-click and select "Safely remove" I get an error every time. The error has to do with "unable to unmount . . . ." and I wish I had the exact text but I don't. Anyway, when I open a terminal and check the mount point, the drive *has* unmounted, so I'm not worried about data loss. But why the error? BTW, the drive is formatted as one partition with NTFS.
I'm not looking for an answer so much as I am just trying to see that someone involved in trying to get Squeeze ready to release hears about this. It's no big deal, but it looks bad.
