I've decided to get rid of ubuntu since I can't get my 5.1 system to work. So here is the drill :
*I have an Ubuntu installed
*I also have a flash and an iso image of windows XP
how do I remove Ubuntu and then install windows xp.I also want to divide my drive into C and D if possible .
Is it possible to install a different windows manager?Currently I am using a HP Netbook 210. The windows manager I am using is gnome-shell that comes as default with Fedora 15. However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager. For example I would like to try the xfce 4.8.
I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager.How easy would it be to remove gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager?
I have installed vista(Preloaded) and Ubuntu 10.10 in dual boot in my laptop. Now i want to get rid of vista, and want to have only Ubuntu, also i want to assign all space to Ubuntu. I have two query's
1. How could i cleanly uninstall Vista from my system? (I Used WUBI to install Ubuntu)
2. Can i install Vista in future? (As my Vista was preloaded, Vista didn't recognize the hard drive on which Ubuntu is installed)
when it comes to Linux with little to no understanding of the command lines and what they mean.
Issue:I currently have a dual boot Windows 7 PC (Toshiba Satellite A100-756 with 250GB HDD and 3GB RAM, 32-bit).What I want to do is format the HDD (removing both partitions) and make a clean install of Ubuntu only.I tried for several hours last night to achieve this using Ubuntu 10.10 and Pendrive, but with no success. System would not boot from USB stick.
How do I: 1. Format the HDD and remove the partitions using only Ubuntu on a USB stick?
2. Install Ubuntu and partition the HDD ready to copy over my backed up files?
Recently when I booted Windows 7, a "check filesystem" thing got up, so I let it do its thing. And now when I start Windows 7 my computer reboots right after "Windows 7" logo pops up. Is there any way I can re-install/repair my Windows 7 without losing my Ubuntu partition and all my stuff on it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Karmic installed, but still using old grub from Jaunty. I decided to get rid of my Vista dual boot so I used gparted, deleted the partitions and moved and enlarged my Ubuntu ones. Grub then didn't work, presumably because I deleted the MBR. I then installed Opensuse 11.2, which I assume still uses old grub too. This gave an Opensuse option which worked, and a Karmic option which took me to the Karmic bootloader, but Karmic did not load. I then tried some instructions to repair grub using the Ubuntu installer, installing grub to my extended partition. This tells me there is no operating system found. I then tried following the instructions at [URL].
My fdisk -l looks like:
dev/sda4 * Extended partition
dev/sda5 Ubuntu /
dev/sda6 Ubuntu /home
[Code].....
I've recently applied for University and am happy to say I got an unconditional offer in Software Development as this is the case, and that I expect I'll be using mostly Windows software on my course, I decided to buy a hard drive from a friend at work, larger than the one I have now, and plan to install Windows 7 on it for the sake of my course and various other things (games etc.)
I prefer Ubuntu myself, and I've been using it long enough to feel comfortable migrating to Ubuntu altogether and ditching the windows partition I have now (I currently dual boot). Reasons being that I'm not much of a fan of dual booting as I think it can complicate things when its not entirely necessary and that there is also a Linux-based module on my course and between an installation going wrong on my personal hard drive or my university hard drive, I'd clearly go along with losing my music and pictures rather than losing all of my coursework :S
So my question is this: is it completely safe to blow away the windows partitions I have now on this hard drive? I made a LiveCD of my install through remastersys but I really would not like to go through setting up my themes, preferences, additional compiz plugins etc.
My hard drive is partitioned fairly simply, with two primary partitions, one for Windows and one for Debian Squeeze.How can I remove sda1 and make it so that Debian takes up the whole disk on one large partition without reinstalling?I have downloaded and burnt the gparted live cd, but I daren't go any further without some hand holding.

If MBR gets damaged boot from MS Windows Xp disc, Select "R" for "recovery console", select main windows installation drive (admin password usually nothing, just press enter) and type "FIXMBR" this will allow you to boot windows again, but Ubuntu partition will be unbootable and require installing ubuntu again to dual boot.
But this leaves Ubuntu partition Un-bootable as it removes the grub menu, how would I do the same for Ubuntu and make window partition un-bootable so I can remove it?
In my system, I had installed windows XP first and had deleted one of the partitions (made free space.I am not a techy. I dont know the exact term). In that space, I have installed PC Linux OS (Linux). Now, I want to use that free space to Install Ubuntu by removing the PC Linux OS. When I boot with the live CD of Ubuntu 9.1 to install, in one of the steps, it says the system does not have any OS. It neither recognises windows nor the other linux. Kindly help me. View 9 Replies View Relatedwhat i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
I installed ubuntu 9.10 besides windows xp. It was not a clean install, it is several times upgraded since 8.1. I wanted to install 64 bit ubuntu, but the boot disk was not recognized by the installer. I removed Ubuntu 9.10 with GPartEd to create unallocated space on which to install 64-bit ubuntu. In doing so I removed the Grub info and cannot boot windows any more.Is there any way to boot clean Windows again?

So I went into Synaptic and manually removed these, then did the long command.Things got removed, reboot.Now Plymouth boots, but it stops at five orange dots (not moving) and then nothing. No login menu. View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried ubuntu, and could never get my sound working with that, so I tried fedora and had the exact same problem there. After a few days of trying to figure it out I decided to give up because it was really getting ridiculous, and I just want to go back to windows where things simply work.
Now the problem is that when I boot from the windows XP install disc, it doesnt recognise anything on my harddrive and just gives me the blue screen when I press any key (after showing me the list of partitions on my harddrive, all of which are <UNKNOWN>). I'm not sure what the problem is but it must be something to do with the fact that I have linux installed, so is there any way I can completely remove Fedora and just start fresh with XP?The only 2 options that the XP install disc gives me are 1) Install windows XP (I get blue screen), or 2) Recover windows XP installation (I dont have xp installed anyway).
Likewise, booting from my Fedora install disc only gives me the options of installing or rescuing Fedora, but not the option of removing it.
I'm thinking of installing Ubuntu, but before I do that I'd like to know if installing it removes your copy of Windows. If it does, is there any way I can work around that?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi'm having trouble with my fresh ubuntu installation (netbook edition). what i did was install xubuntu-desktop on top of that (wanted to check it out)..........didn't really work for me, so i removed it, hoping this would also remove the xubuntu desktop logon screen, which i didn't like. since this wasn't the case, i went to synaptics and removed all and everything with xubuntu in the title. NOTE: in the same session i turned off password requests for login - it could also matter, but i'm not sure, so i thought i'd mention it. the end result: three warning messages at logon

- There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/bgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)
- Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/dsikl/Desktop, /home/dsikl/.nautilus. Before running Nautilus, please create these folders, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them.
i don't have access to my programs, administrator tools, /home folder, nothing.........the only thing that appears is the right part of the top bar (network, clock etc.), but also completely different.......it doesn't have my WLAN data anymore (can't access it), and all i have managed to get started was (accidentally) terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T, and from there I can use sudo, or even start nautilus, but can't access my own user, no matter what.........in the end i somehow managed to get to the point where it requested my passphrase, which i wanted to print out a day before it happened, but didn't and the screenshot is unfortunately within my /home folder. i tried reinstalling xubuntu-desktop, even ubuntu-desktop, i repaired broken packages from the recovery mode, tried everything i could to get the bugger going again, no success yet.
i would be happy to do a clean install, but there's one spreadsheet in the documents folder which i desperately need and i really need to get a hold of it before formating. could some sort of a rescue livecd help? i just need that one file. the easiest would be if i could somehow repair whatever packages may be broken, or manually (with apt-get or similar) reinstall the additional xubuntu packages i manually removed via synaptics, but i wouldn't have a clue what those were

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I bought my computer from a friend, he told me that it had 60Gbs in it. Well, when I began to install Ubuntu Linx 9.10 I came to the point of decission of whether or not to delete Windows XP or run Ubuntu 9.10 along with Windows XP. I had a decision to make and I honestly thought I had enough free space to run both. I kept on having problems bringing up Ubuntu. It would go so far and then it would freeze. Well I updated GNOME and I was able to login and try a few things. I of course downloaded and installed the program that I needed to run the program that was running my online radio station. I also downloaded a scanner for to check virusus. I then tried to download some other softwear but I deleted them and kept the scanner and the other program that plays my radio station. Since I did that I logged out and shut down the computer. I haven't been able to get to the point to where I can login again. It freezes. How can I add more memory of free space to run Ubutu. If there is no way of doing that how can I delete Ubuntu and start all over again so that I can again install Ubuntu Linux 9.10 and take off Windows XP so I can run Ubuntu. I really do like the Ubuntu's system. It is so very quick bringing up websites. I have a 32bit download on the CD. I found out the computer was only 16Gbs.

I am using OpenSUSE 11 on my Intel Dual core. But, now i want to move to Centos5 and planing to remove SUSE and installing Centos5. But to be frank, i don't have any source to take the backup of my data. So, can i install only CentOS by removing SUSE without any data lose. Any procedure? If yes, then let me know the step by step guide so that i can go with Centos ASAP.

I have provided 2gb space for SWAP partition and remaining for root (/). I have done this manually. Installation was completed, and ubuntu asked me to reboot the system. I did so.
Now comes my problem.......I am getting some DHCP connection or some thing weird.......after that i am getting a message ......and with a message asking me to press any key.....the same thing is coming even after restarting the system....i am unable to see both windows and linux now!

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I get to the "Allocate Drive Space" section, I have only 2 options, namely "Erase and use the entire disk", which alarms me because I want to install UNR alongside Windows XP on my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA. The other option is "Specify partitions manually (advanced)". For obvious reasons, I am reluctant to try this. I have a C Drive (Windows) and a D Drive (mainly for Backup of Windows). Each drive is about 72GB with about 60GB free on my D Drive. Obviously, this is where I would like to install UNR, but will I have to clear my D Drive completely? I still have about 27GB free on my C Drive.
