View 1 RepliesI'm having problems with the ubuntu software center. When I try to install any software it does nothing when I click the install button. I can click on the visit website page and download the source and compile it manually but I was under the assumption that you could use the install button and it would do it automatically for you. Am I wrong? I am running UNR 9.10 on an Acer Aspire One 110-1588.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 11.04 on two of my computers, one of them an upgrade and the other one was a clean install, both are having the same issue. When installing .deb files, the Ubuntu Software Center launches as usual although when I click install, the installation starts and it shows the progress bar for a very short time and then the progress just disappears as if the installation stopped. I'm not sure if the installation has actually stopped or if the Software Center is just not showing the progress. Applications that are in the Ubuntu Software Center database works just fine, only .deb files are giving this problem. I installed GDebi Package Manager (Ubuntu 10.04 used to install .deb files with this application) and I can install just fine using that. Is this an 11.04 bug? The issue occurs both in Unity and in GNOME.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get 9.10 to work nicely on a Thinkpad Edge 14".Everything is working fine, except that I have issues with the intel graphics drivers. The monitor's native resolution is 1366x768 and I have Intel HD graphics card on it.I have changed my xorg.conf to use driver = "vesa", but now I get only a resolution of 1024x768.I tried to use xrandr to fix this, by adding a new mode etcetera, but this does not work - I believe because the driver is the issue. Also, doing Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6] gives me a blank screen rather than a console.
How do I find out the details about my graphics chip? Intel Corporation Arrandale Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 12)Maybe I should go more bleeding edge for my drivers? How do I do that?
I'm new to debian. I just installed Debian 6 via a single CD image. For some reason, I cannot find any kind of application that allows me to select software or install it. I've tried the instructions in many different threads on how to install software including synaptic package manager, software-center, etc. None of them seem to work or maybe there is something that I don't understand about this process in Debian.
I've used Ubuntu, openSuse, and !# so I am relatively familiar with terminal and installing software using different methods, but am not used to not having any kind of package manager to work with. I've downloaded "Software Center" for debian but terminal will not dpkg the package, advising errors. How to install some kind of package manager; "Software Center" or Synaptic would be preferable. I really want to try out Debian and get to know this operating system.
See the attached picture. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried removing and re-installing flash using both Terminal and Ubuntu Software Center to no avail.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed these OS's in this order:
1 - Vista
2 - Ubuntu Server 9.04
3 - Ubuntu Desk 10.04
4 - BT4
I recently upgraded my most often used OS (#3) to 10.04 version and it updated GRUB to GRUB2 as part of the dist-upgrade. I have a feeling that I wasn't careful enough when installing BT4 or I made a mistake in the partitioning. I had plenty of space that was free waiting to be used by some other os and I designated some of that space for BT4.
When I got it all installed (off of a USB live boot) I rebooted and noticed it was back to grub one. The Vista install and the Ubuntu Server install both work still... but the recently updated (to Grub2) Ubuntu Desk install now hangs immediately after selecting it and pressing enter in Grub. I can mount the partition within BT4 just fine and see that all my data is still there, it just won't boot.
What I've tried Using BT4 to install Grub2. (no luck) Installing Grub1.5 back after finding Grub2 didn't work. (no luck) My plan When I get home from work today I'm going to take the "quiet" option off of the boot command in Grub for that Ubuntu OS and see if there's any error it's dumping before it hangs.
Hope that someone has had this issue before and can just tell me a straight forward way of resolving this issue. I'd prefer to use GRUB2 as my boot loader.
Cliff Notes Had other OS's installed Updated to newest Ubuntu (installed GRUB2 as the new bootloader)Used some spare disk to install BT4 New Ubuntu that used Grub2 is now the only OS that won't boot

I'm just wondering if it's possible to install "fedora"'s gnome-packagekit with it's GUI (gpk-application) in debian squeeze rather than installing "ubuntu" software center? Are there packages availabe in .deb file format in any repository?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't open ubuntu software center.I tried the following commands:
sudo apt-get purge software-center
sudo apt-get install software-center
Both of the commands above did not produce any errors; however, I still get the same error when trying to start ubuntu software center.
I've just set myself up with lucid - to anyone involved in the development of it, congratulations; it was the easiest install I have ever done, and it looks and feels great.
However, I am having a small problem - when I've tried to install some new programs (specifically sunbird), it's told me that I need to update the software catalogue, and I can't find a function in the GUI to do so. I went into a terminal and used apt-get update in the hope that that would fix it as well as trying the update manager, and then went to the help file/google but didn't have any luck. I know I could install it through the command line, but I'd rather deal with this issue. Can somebody please point me in the right direction?
I've been thinking of turning my old computer into a media center for a while now (it was running Ubuntu Server 9.10). I recently bought a new 23inch screen so.. out with the server, in with the media center! (currently Xubuntu but running on LXDE as it's a lot lighter) My problem: The computer barely manages to play 720p videos on XBMC (on ..... or totem/vlc it's just impossible with breaks, lag and constant freezes).. I used the debug function of XBMC and guess what.. a 720p movie takes my cpu to a constant 100% usage!! =X
So here's my question.. what distro or 'buntu flavor would you advise me to use?? I thought about a minimal install but don't want to try it just yet..

How do I get rid of this? My software center is not working and it keeps asking for this CD ROM.
seckin@seckin-System:~$ sudo apt-get update
Ign cdrom://Ubuntu 10.10 _Maverick Meerkat_ - Release amd64 (20101007) maverick Release.gpg
Media change: please insert the disc labeled
'Ubuntu 10.10 _Maverick Meerkat_ - Release amd64 (20101007)'
in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter
I have Ubuntu 10.10, Software Center does not work, and it always shows up errors. When I run:
Code:
dpkg --configure -a
I get:

I Keep getting a dialogue window prompting me to repair it, it returns the error " E:I wasn't able to locate file for the ultimate-edition-nautilus-scripts package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.: ", after looking around the forums & trying many of the techniques including creating an empty file & running aptitude -f install as well as a few more commands mentioned in various threads, all to no avail, I am stuck with the same message.
Is there any way to totally uninstall & reinstall apt getting rid of any changes that would be causing this or is there a simpler fix I have just overlooked ?.
I receive the following errors.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 10.10, I have been unable to use the software center to install. Every time I click 'install', the install progress bar just hangs, reading 'Waiting for apt-get to exit'. The same thing happens when attempting to install upgrades via Update Manager.
I can however update via Synaptic and using 'apt-get upgrade' in the terminal.
Looking at the AMD/ATI download pages, I can't tell if catalyst control center (which installs the drivers) is fully functional for Ubuntu 10.10.
