I managed to download jre-6u25-linux-x64.bin and saved it on my desktop. Then a ran jre-6u25-linux-x64.bin and it created a directory on my desktop called jre-6.0_25. Within the directory there the following subdirectories: bin, javaws, lib, man, and plugin.

They have Kookies.[URL]However Terminal gave me an error, saying dependencies about odbcinst1debian2, saying that it depends on odbcinst but is not going to be insalled. So I went into Synaptic and manually removed these, then did the long command.Things got removed, reboot.Now Plymouth boots, but it stops at five orange dots (not moving) and then nothing. No login menu. I held down the power button and rebooted three times, all stuck at Plymouth.Yeah I can reinstall Ubuntu, I have the disk, but there are many configs that I did, that I do not remember.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried ubuntu, and could never get my sound working with that, so I tried fedora and had the exact same problem there. After a few days of trying to figure it out I decided to give up because it was really getting ridiculous, and I just want to go back to windows where things simply work.
Now the problem is that when I boot from the windows XP install disc, it doesnt recognise anything on my harddrive and just gives me the blue screen when I press any key (after showing me the list of partitions on my harddrive, all of which are <UNKNOWN>). I'm not sure what the problem is but it must be something to do with the fact that I have linux installed, so is there any way I can completely remove Fedora and just start fresh with XP?The only 2 options that the XP install disc gives me are 1) Install windows XP (I get blue screen), or 2) Recover windows XP installation (I dont have xp installed anyway).
Likewise, booting from my Fedora install disc only gives me the options of installing or rescuing Fedora, but not the option of removing it.
i'm having trouble with my fresh ubuntu installation (netbook edition). what i did was install xubuntu-desktop on top of that (wanted to check it out)..........didn't really work for me, so i removed it, hoping this would also remove the xubuntu desktop logon screen, which i didn't like. since this wasn't the case, i went to synaptics and removed all and everything with xubuntu in the title. NOTE: in the same session i turned off password requests for login - it could also matter, but i'm not sure, so i thought i'd mention it. the end result: three warning messages at logon

i don't have access to my programs, administrator tools, /home folder, nothing.........the only thing that appears is the right part of the top bar (network, clock etc.), but also completely different.......it doesn't have my WLAN data anymore (can't access it), and all i have managed to get started was (accidentally) terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T, and from there I can use sudo, or even start nautilus, but can't access my own user, no matter what.........in the end i somehow managed to get to the point where it requested my passphrase, which i wanted to print out a day before it happened, but didn't and the screenshot is unfortunately within my /home folder. i tried reinstalling xubuntu-desktop, even ubuntu-desktop, i repaired broken packages from the recovery mode, tried everything i could to get the bugger going again, no success yet.
i would be happy to do a clean install, but there's one spreadsheet in the documents folder which i desperately need and i really need to get a hold of it before formating. could some sort of a rescue livecd help? i just need that one file. the easiest would be if i could somehow repair whatever packages may be broken, or manually (with apt-get or similar) reinstall the additional xubuntu packages i manually removed via synaptics, but i wouldn't have a clue what those were

View 3 Replies View RelatedA few months back my previous computer went west and I've only just got a replacement, and having had enough of Windoze to last me a lifetime, I decided on Linux and and selected Ubuntu, keeping the Internet account current in the interim with a couple of topups done from Internet cafes. Problem. I'm on mobile broadband, Virgin to be exact. The machine recognizes the modem; the Virgin icon is plainly visible on the desktop, but that's as far as it goes, I simply can't connect, though I think the machine is trying to.I set up a mobile broadband connection and I've edited it every whichaway, but to no avail. It's only Basic though, I haven't tried Advanced. Should I try Advanced, and while I'm at it, what else could causing my problems?

1. How could i cleanly uninstall Vista from my system? (I Used WUBI to install Ubuntu)
2. Can i install Vista in future? (As my Vista was preloaded, Vista didn't recognize the hard drive on which Ubuntu is installed)
Is it possible to install a different windows manager?Currently I am using a HP Netbook 210. The windows manager I am using is gnome-shell that comes as default with Fedora 15. However, I am wondering if I could completely remove this and install a different windows manager. For example I would like to try the xfce 4.8.
I am not talking about completely removing Fedora 15 and then installing Fedora 15 xfce spin. Just the window manager.How easy would it be to remove gnome-shell windows manager and then install xfce 4.8 windows manager?

I am using OpenSUSE 11 on my Intel Dual core. But, now i want to move to Centos5 and planing to remove SUSE and installing Centos5. But to be frank, i don't have any source to take the backup of my data. So, can i install only CentOS by removing SUSE without any data lose. Any procedure? If yes, then let me know the step by step guide so that i can go with Centos ASAP.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI do a lot of work on Ancient Near East Languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Akkadian, Hittite, Ugaritic...), and I need a lot of diacritic marks. Following these instructions and using the character map, I've managed to get everything I wanted. There's just one fly left in my ointment. There is a standard for transcribing aspirated Hebrew consonants which involves putting a line below the character.I can make them using a combining character (U0331), but this is the rub: with all the other diacritics, I have to add them before the character, and with this set, I have to add it afterwards. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's a huge pain in the butt when your actually using it. I tried using combining characters with all my diacritics, but they don't work right with capital letters, so that was a no-go The combining characters also do screwy things with formating and spacing sometimes.
For all the dead-keys, there is a normal kind of formating that X11 uses. A grave("`") is "grave", and a dead grave is "dead_grave". A macron ("�") is "macron" and a dead macron is "dead_macron"... not rocket science. Anyway, I've tried all kinds of possible names for this character with the word "dead" in front of them, and no luck. I've tried a fair number of Unicode codes, and no luck with them either. I even tried "dead_U005F" (U005F the normal symbol).
So I can't install Firefox, because it conflicts with Iceweasel, but it appears that uninstalling Iceweasel uninstalls GNOME (gnome & gnome-core).Is there any way around this? Perhaps telling apt that Firefox is an alternate to Iceweasel?

Now that I am done reinstalling Ubuntu I am trying to restore the backup. However, when it actually begins restoring the backup, it says "Restore failed: failed with an unknown error".

But opensuse, while it has taken me a little bit longer to figure a few things out, has by far the best. It even allows me to configure my touchpad so it doesn't drive me insane.On to my actual problem. the portable harddrive placed all my files on to when switching from windows mounts but shows up empty.I know the files are there because they show up when i plug the harddrive into my ps3.
I put the all the files i wanted to save from windows into a folder called portableharddrive (i think) and put that folder on to the portable harddrive.if i do a directory search by running the drive in terminal this is what i get.Can anyone help me find my files or do i have to wait untill my girlfriend gets her computer back?
I am using Ubuntu & Kubuntu.and have also trialed Fedora 14. I am trying to install the Linux RPM Drivers& The CUPS Driver for this Printer which I have found on the Canon Asia site .The Printer has been reccognised by the Os but when I try to install them I get a message that the installation has failed because libgdk-1.12.so.0 is not installed?[I understand that this software is part of the GIMP Toolbox]These Drivers installed without difficulty in Fedora?
View 5 Replies View RelatedCentos 5.2 Asus Eee box with Atom N270 and it came installed with "eLinux" which doesn't even come close to meeting my needs (low demand intranet server). But eLinux did work as far as I tested it.
First, CentOS seems to detect the Intel 945GME video chip but I end up with a blank screen. I used text mode to install CentOS. Then I searched for a solution. Found someone suggested also using the i915 driver with 945GM. That didn't work.
So, I reverted to a VESA driver. That worked except I couldn't get resolution greater than 800x600 even after I added a Mode line for 1024x768 to the xorg.conf file. However, the X interface wasn't that important. I mostly wanted into the utilities so I could fix the network.
I had tried a fixed address (192.168.1.11) since the box is supposed to be a "thin server." No luck. So, I tried DNS and tried activating again. The suggestion was that the network cable wasn't connected. When using DNS, the network hub lights flash. Something is happening.
Rebooted the computer using Puppy Linux (on a usb key). Video comes up in VESA mode. I can set it to 1024x768. It found the DNS server without any complaints. (Note: I didn't so much as touch the ethernet cable during the reboot).
Copying and Pasting isn't easy with a computer that won't connect to the LAN. But the hardware is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 2). I since tried Slackware 12.1 and it's pretty happy on that box. Vesa mode gets me 1024x768 and the ethernet works (however it thinks it's on eth1 which may or may not be a clue). I'll try CentOS on an old box for other testing.
what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.
