I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 CLI with Openbox as the WM on my Dell laptop. I installed gnome-power-manager because I like to suspend my laptop when the lid is closed. When the close the lid and reopen it, the screen is black and the computer never suspends. This happens regardless of whether or not gnome-power-manger is running is the background.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a laptop. The laptop has an external 19" screen connected to it through the VGA port. I am not using the laptop screen (because it is small and flickers constantly) but only the external screen. When I shut the laptop lid the external screen blanks. There is no option in the power management dialog and the option "Activate screensaver when idle..." in the screensaver dialog is unchecked (which I would like to re-enable to blank screen when idle for x minutes). How can I get Ubuntu to leave my external screen on when the laptop lid is closed?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

I thought I performed all the steps in the sticky, and I didn't see anything special regarding power management. The power management tool does not list any settings for lid closed.

After Wubi installed the Ubuntu Installation Files on my hard drive, I restarted my computer. After restarting, I selected Ubuntu on the selection of operating systems.
First, I saw the introductory logo of Ubuntu (when the ubuntu loads its files). After that, instead I will saw the installation progress or the installation of language packs, only Black Screen will appear on my Laptop screen. I have waited for an hour, but nothing happens. It did not pushed through with the installation.
i'm running on fc 11 x86_64 i'm start my computer with blank no boot or bios boot at all. i also dont know its because of hardware failure or fc11

I've done a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I end-up with a blank screen. I've also tried a fresh install of Xubuntu 10.04 and Kubuntu 10.04 and I get the same blank screen.
Ubuntu 9.10 was working perfectly though. So what do you think happened?
I installed the Ubuntu 10.04 livecd on my desktop and it works perfectly so I think it is not a burning problem.
I just installed Linux 5.5 on a Toshiba laptopn (i3, 64 bit). Centos runs until it reaches a very dark screen. On a few occasions, I am able to see something but the screen is very dark.

At first i thought it was fan that was out and once it got hot enough it cut the laptop off like my old Acer did.
But after close examination i noticed that it continues working. HD still spining and fan blows..
Example: Turn on>Hit F2 to go in to Bios> Bios screen appears>Before i have a chance to do anything it geos blank but continues working> I hit Cntrl ALt Del> it resets and screen comes right back up>second later it goes blank again.
ALSO the toshiba logo and whole screen seems to have a red tint to it.
I also get a media test error but that is likely from hard drive not being there during some of the tests.
DO you think it can be an LCD Backlight issue? or possibly video card?
I am running Debian 8.3, and I'm running Gnome 3.14.1.I have an external monitor plugged in with HDMI, and while Linux is loading both screens are on duplicate. Once the GUI kicks in, only the external screen works, so I have to enter my password blindly. Then, I open a terminal and run

I'm wondering: Is there a way to streamline this so that it happens on boot, but after GNOME loads?Or: Is there a better method to solve this?
I'm using a dell latitude d630 with an nvidia quadro 135M card. I'm able to suspend without any problems while running the X server. If I try to suspend on console without the X server running, the laptop wakes up to a blank screen. The screen remains blank and my only resort is to type sudo halt (with the screen off).I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver with the nvidia-kernel package on testing.

At first I tried switching between VGA and DVI as well but upon ruling that out, I switch to my on-board video card and that is working thus far, but I'm trying very hard to figure out a way to be able to switch back. Anyways I'll check back in later on if I have any new information I will post.

I have gotten Ubuntu configured to play the video and sound but I cant figure out a way to keep playing when I close the lid. Every time I do that it goes black. Also when I re-open it the laptop display is blank as well and will not come back on.

I am running ubuntu 10.04 on a dell xps m1530 and when ever i shut the laptop then re open it I am disconnected from my wireless connection. I would love if when I opened it it would just stay connected. Is this possible?
View 1 Replies View RelatedDid an upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and it was very smooth. One minor issue is now when I close my laptops lid (Sony Vaio) it does not sleep it just shuts downs. Same with habernate. It just shuts down all together. Then when I boot I get a brief error message to fast to read and the old 10.04 password screen rather than the new 10.10. This does not happen when I just shut down from inside Gnome and this never happened in 10.04. I am using generic video settings and all else works a charm.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 6930 with an nVidia GeForce 9300m GS hooked up to my LG TV via HDMI.I have used the nVidia configuration tool to set the TV as a clone of my desktop and all appears to be working fine except for one thing.When I close my laptop lid, the TV also blanks.I know I could turn off my laptop monitor from within the nVidia config tool, but that is not what I want to do as I still use it; and besides, it's inconvenient to have to do it all the time.

cpufreqd and cpufrequtils are installed. cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor' is 'ondemand'
Constant fan was not a problem in XP Pro; I just installed Debian one month ago.
I don't know if it sounds weird but I've been trying for weeks with no result. I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I looked through the gnome power management settings and when the laptop lid is closed it can only suspend, blank screen, hibernate or shutdown. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Its a brand new Acer aspire 5734Z with a 15,6 inches screen (wich is why I want to plug in my 19 inches monitor and work on bigger screen)

I have configured my laptop not to suspend itself when the lid is down. I can verify that the laptop still runs when the lid is down, because I can hear the music if it is already playing. However the Wifi always disconnects when the lid is down. If I am downloading a file, it always gets interrupted.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen i use my computer (whether it's going online, typing, playing a flash game, or coding) I get these "Black Flashes" that are becoming longer and more frequent. A "Black Flash" is when my computer screen turns blank (but you can still see the backlight) and i have to press the NUMpad ENTER button, shake my mouse furiously, or click my mouse, which sometimes causes undesired actions, but gets me my screen back. sometimes the Black Flashes last a milisecond or 5 seconds or i have to hold the power button and restart because it won't come back on.

I've had this problem for ages and decided to try to tackle it. It occasionally also occurs on my laptop but only intermittently. The video on the second screen seems to go haywire. On boot, it doesn't display the background image. It only will display a fading black and gray picture. Then anything that is put on the screen is captured like a screen shot on the background. It is just hard to know if things were closed

I have downloaded it to two different computers, then burned the images to two different blank CD's (different brands) and neither loads. Both only get as far as the Lubuntu menu, once ENTER is pressed at that point to load the LiveCD, a blank screen eventually appears with a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, that's it. They were both burned using the slowest burn speeds available.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe day started as usual until I got the very bright idea to install Ubuntu. A new OS along side W7, that sounded great. I checked some guides on the Internet, it was all very straight forward. Install it and Grub will show you the OS:es when you boot up. I installed Ubuntu, rebooted. After the BIOS messages the screen goes blank and my screen on-button begins to blink, as if trying to find a signal, I press enter, it reboots instantly. After BIOS messages I get to a screen that says "GRUB error: uknown filesystem grub rescue>"
I've looked through everything here and nothing works. I've tried to fix the mbr-thingy using Windows Repair and even though it says "one partition was updated with new boot-thingy" when I reboot, I get into that very same grub rescue. I think my setup has something to do with it. I run RAID0 (2x360Gb hard drives), first having C: at 50Gb and then the rest as F: for programs and such. What I did was that I shrunk the F: part and then used that as partition for Ubuntu. Also please have a look at these screenshots, my partitiontables and such seems completely wacky to the raid: Where should the boot-loader go? I'm very, very new at this. I've had Ubuntu Netbook remix on my netbook for a time but still treat me as an utter beginner.
