I am running ubuntu 10.04 on a dell xps m1530 and when ever i shut the laptop then re open it I am disconnected from my wireless connection. I would love if when I opened it it would just stay connected. Is this possible?
View 1 RepliesIf I put my computer into sleep or hibernate, I have no wireless connection when I start up again. I click on the wireless manager in the tray, but wireless is disabled and I can't enable it. This never happened until I updated to Ubuntu 9.10.
I am using the b43 driver (I think), but I'm not sure which command to execute to display information about my wireless card.
I have a Acer Aspire 7535-5020 laptop with a Atheros AR5B91 wireless adapter & lose my connection after about 10 minutes.The only way to reconnect is by rebooting.I read in another thread that installing the linux-backports-modules-karmic would solve the problem.However when I try to install it I get the message, Error Dependency is notsatisfiable:Linux-backports-Modules-2.6.31-22 generic.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Studio 1737 running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.My WiFi was working fine a few days ago until I tried to boot into another mode that allows me to boot into my other Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows Vista.I booted into that Ubuntu, which I thought had been overwritten when I was having problems and installed the one I am currently using.I shut down since it didn't have anything of any use to me at the moment, and I booted back into this current Ubuntu.Now, whenever I shut my laptop screen and open it back up to login, the WiFi is disconnected.(I was also having this problem on the Ubuntu that I booted into earlier, but that WiFi did this from the start on that one.)
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

It seems that I have my graphical problems at least temporarily solved, but I continued to lose my wireless connection after an hour of use. This is an old and well supported chipset (RT2500) and I had never had any issues with it before. I use WPA security, and one kind poster suggested I had a line for using the old "wext" driver in the /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-wlan0 file, and that seems to have sorted it since I have not had any further issues since doing that edit. I eventually found the information on my own:

i am interested in knowing how to have the ability to play music out of my speakers when my laptop lid is closed. i would be interested it this and how to do it, but i need something that i can turn this feature on and off. perhaps a option in the panel.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI like to play videos from my laptop on my tv in my bedroom using an hdmi cable. I used it in windows all the time. I have gotten Ubuntu configured to play the video and sound but I cant figure out a way to keep playing when I close the lid. Every time I do that it goes black. Also when I re-open it the laptop display is blank as well and will not come back on.
Under the power option when lid closed all it offers is

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 CLI with Openbox as the WM on my Dell laptop. I installed gnome-power-manager because I like to suspend my laptop when the lid is closed. When the close the lid and reopen it, the screen is black and the computer never suspends. This happens regardless of whether or not gnome-power-manger is running is the background.
View 4 Replies View RelatedDid an upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and it was very smooth. One minor issue is now when I close my laptops lid (Sony Vaio) it does not sleep it just shuts downs. Same with habernate. It just shuts down all together. Then when I boot I get a brief error message to fast to read and the old 10.04 password screen rather than the new 10.10. This does not happen when I just shut down from inside Gnome and this never happened in 10.04. I am using generic video settings and all else works a charm.

I am not using the laptop screen (because it is small and flickers constantly) but only the external screen. When I shut the laptop lid the external screen blanks. There is no option in the power management dialog and the option "Activate screensaver when idle..." in the screensaver dialog is unchecked (which I would like to re-enable to blank screen when idle for x minutes). How can I get Ubuntu to leave my external screen on when the laptop lid is closed?

I don't know if it sounds weird but I've been trying for weeks with no result. I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I looked through the gnome power management settings and when the laptop lid is closed it can only suspend, blank screen, hibernate or shutdown. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Its a brand new Acer aspire 5734Z with a 15,6 inches screen (wich is why I want to plug in my 19 inches monitor and work on bigger screen)

I have configured my laptop not to suspend itself when the lid is down. I can verify that the laptop still runs when the lid is down, because I can hear the music if it is already playing. However the Wifi always disconnects when the lid is down. If I am downloading a file, it always gets interrupted.

Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a server with two ethernet ports. I configured eth0 to be static, set at 10.1.10.148. I plugged in another router into the other ethernet port in order to configure that router. I configured eth1 to use dhcp. Using /etc/network/interfaces rather than gnome network manager. When I did this, I lost internet connectivity (internet routes through eth0 of course)

In order to recover internet activity, I had to disconnect the new router on eth1 of course, and do sudo ifdown eth1. That wasn't enough however. After rebooting numerous times and pulling out my hair, I finally tried configuring eth0 as dhcp, rather than static, and this fixed the problem.
- Why didn't sudo ifdown eth1 solve the problem? What information was saved between reboots that somehow remembered that I plugged in the new router? Because my thinking was if /etc/network/interfaces was identical, and the network topology was identical, after a reboot everything should be restored, but it wasn't.
I have just removed ndiswrapper and installed Realtek RTL819se!! How ever after I restarted I lose my wifi and have to do change directory to use ./wlan0up to get it working again.

I installed 8.04.3 Ubuntu into a used laptop for a friend, it was an ex business model HP I think, it installed well and wireless was no problem, if the ethernet cable was not plugged in, I could see the wireless signal indicator, it seemed to be there automatically and I could see the available networks displayed.The user has now apparently been using it a lot on ethernet cable for a month or two and wants to begin occasionally to use wireless. She says her daughter gets wireless ok in the house on visits, so I guess that the wifi is always on and available from the (BT, UK) home hub device in the house.
The user is reasonably adventurous, and it is possible that her exploration into a new machine and a new (to her) Ubuntu from previous windows use, she may have inadvertently clicked something and turned off wifi?The user is reporting that without the ethernet cable plugged in, there is no sign of wireless being recognisedA right click on the top panel network icon shows that there is 'no network available' (X sign) and a menu item exists for 'Edit Wireless networks'I have little or no experience about wifi use, so I would be grateful for comments on how I can guide the user to elegantly make use of either wifi or cabled connection
This must be a repost, but I still want to ask, how do I activate the wireless on my laptop? I've been given advice about this a while back, but forgot. Just reinstalled a fresh copy of 9.10

searching broadcom ubuntu in google results in a thread that is five years old. has there been any changes? i still cannot set up my 4 year old laptop's wireless to run and i have just about given up. why should i spend my valuable time getting something that is suppose to work when i could just run windows 7 and be done with it. now this is coming from a 4 year old laptop, has anything changed? i want to hear yes but i know that wireless support in linux is absolutely atrocious and sickening, even more than 4 years ago since wireless is now the norm and linux refuses to give proper attention to wireless drivers.

I have been googleing for the last hour and a half trying to find the easiest way to set up a static IP for my laptop's wireless connection.The most promising link I found required me to delete the network manager but I do not want to do this as I often take my laptop with me so I need to be able to connect to new wlan easily. I just want a static IP so I can set up port forwarding.Is there a equivalent process to windows XP where you just manually assign a local address like 192.168.2.9 or something like that? I tried setting it up through the network manager but later read that it doesn't work for encrypted connections.
