I am running karmic on a MBP 5,2. When I close the lid, nothing happens. The screen does not blank, machine does not sleep... nothing. I thought I performed all the steps in the sticky, and I didn't see anything special regarding power management. The power management tool does not list any settings for lid closed.

Ubuntu :: Prevent Blank Screen When Laptop Lid Is Closed?

Nov 23, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a laptop. The laptop has an external 19" screen connected to it through the VGA port. I am not using the laptop screen (because it is small and flickers constantly) but only the external screen. When I shut the laptop lid the external screen blanks. There is no option in the power management dialog and the option "Activate screensaver when idle..." in the screensaver dialog is unchecked (which I would like to re-enable to blank screen when idle for x minutes). How can I get Ubuntu to leave my external screen on when the laptop lid is closed?

Ubuntu / Apple :: MacBook Managed To Get A Higher Screen Resolution Than 1280x800?

I'm a little surprised that I haven't seen any other complaints about their MacBook only going up to a resolution of 1280x800. Does anyone have a configuration for higher resolutions or have any insight into how it might be possible to obtain them? It works in Mac OS X, so it should certainly work in Linux.

Fedora Installation :: White Macbook 5,2 Grub Lockup - Hang At Blank Screen

Jun 13, 2009

[code]...

when trying to choose the Linux partition, I found that it would just hang at a blank screen. Looking further into the problem, I had booted with the Linux Rescue and checked the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. It appeared to be that the menu was set to hidden. I got rid of that line, and checked the boot arguments. It still had acpi=off set with the kernel and everything else seems to be in order. Root is set to root (hd0,2) which should be correct.

Just one thing bothers me: when I tell Nvidia X Server Settings that I want to use my external screen as primary screen it doesn't put the gnome panels to the other screen, well... sometimes it does after a couple times but most of the time it doesn't.is there a way to automatically detect when I connect a monitor instead of going to the Nvidia settings? Just the way Mac OS X does?

The problem I am having is that when I boot Ubuntu from the MM 2010 CD-ROM the initial menu that allows you to select a language is displayed, but after that the screen goes blank and stays blank. I am using the HDMI port to DVI output and I am wonder if that could be a cause of the blank screen. Is there a boot command that I can use to allow Ubuntu to display with the HDMI port or other item I need to fix to get Ubuntu CD installer video display to work with my MM 2010?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Replacing Os X Entirely On A Macbook 1.1

Apr 30, 2010

I have a first generation Macbook that shipped with Tiger. I don't often use the os x partition anymore, as I installed Windows XP on a 15 gig partition back when bootcamp was still in beta and I normally use that when I'm on my laptop. Since Tiger is rather old and the only reason I would want to upgrade to leopard is to have access to bootcamp again (they disabled access to the bootcamp application in os x, but I can still boot into windows), I have been thinking about wiping out my os x installation and using ubuntu instead. Does anyone have any thoughts on the pros and cons of totally removing os x?

The main reason I hesitate to just jump in and do it is because if I decide to install os x again I won't be able to install bootcamp again, unless I buy leopard. If I wipe out os x and install ubuntu, will I still be able to access windows in the same way? Windows uses bootcamp drivers to run properly, so I have never quite been sure if it is pulling something off of the os x partition or if it is totally standalone.

sudo apt-get install cheese - To get iSight working.
sudo apt-get install lirc - to get remote working (tested in XBMC)

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Install 11.04 On Macbook Air 3,2

Jul 25, 2011

The wiki says there is a way to install from usb but I can't get it to work on my Macbook Air 3,2 (the Nov 2010 revision, not the one from last week).

My goal is to dual-boot OS X and Ubuntu, but I can't get the Ubuntu installer to boot. I've tried a lot of variations on the instructions I've found, so I get the feeling I'm probably missing something fundamental.

I installed refit and used BootCamp to partition the drive. I downloaded desktop/alternate and i386/amd64 isos. I tried to follow the instructions to use unetbootin on OS X to install the ISOs to my USB drive, but neither drive that I connect appears in the "Drive:" selector when on OS X. I used usb-creator-gtk and unetbootin on an Unbuntu machine to try each of the four ISOs.

When I try to boot the Air from the USB drive, I got a few different types of failure:

gpt, single fat partition, unetbootin -> alternate amd64
result: "Non-system disk" "Press any key to reboot"
mbr, single fat, unetbootin -> alternate amd64
result: black screen, fan runs at 100% after a minute or two

[Code].....

I tried dd'ing a disk image to my new partition as described here and here with the desktop amd64 and i386 images, got a few different errors - once syslinux complaining "Error: No configuration file found" when the drive I dd'd from wasn't properly unmounted before bringing it to the Air, once I chose the drive in refit, refit displayed the single logo, and it never booted, and once I got an error I didn't copy down about needing a boot floppy.

Has anyone successfully booted Ubuntu from USB key on the Air? Exactly how did you prepare which image?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installing 11.04 On MacBook Pro (5,3)?

Aug 10, 2011

I've been trying to install 11.04 on my MacBook Pro for the past couple weeks, and I'm getting pretty frustrated with it. When I try to boot from a DVD, I either get a blank screen with just a flashing cursor, or it will ask me if I want to try, install, or verify the disc, after which I will get a bunch of different-colored blocks all around the screen.

I have installed past versions of Ubuntu on this computer with no problems, so I'm pretty stumped now on why I'm having this problem. Also, I've tried the Ubuntu Wiki and sticky thread on this forum, but nothing in either seems to help. Additionally, I have installed Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. I don't think it'd effect anything, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
