Aug 2, 2011My Fedora is getting freeze when I close the laptop lid. The error I am getting is "nouveau Register 0x00004030 not found in PLL limits table".

May 15, 2010When I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

Constant fan was not a problem in XP Pro; I just installed Debian one month ago.

I have configured my laptop not to suspend itself when the lid is down. I can verify that the laptop still runs when the lid is down, because I can hear the music if it is already playing. However the Wifi always disconnects when the lid is down. If I am downloading a file, it always gets interrupted.

Feb 19, 2010I like to play videos from my laptop on my tv in my bedroom using an hdmi cable. I used it in windows all the time. I have gotten Ubuntu configured to play the video and sound but I cant figure out a way to keep playing when I close the lid. Every time I do that it goes black. Also when I re-open it the laptop display is blank as well and will not come back on.
Under the power option when lid closed all it offers is

Suspend
Hibernate
shut down
In Windows I had a "do nothing"
Anyway to do this in Ubuntu?

Mar 26, 2010I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 CLI with Openbox as the WM on my Dell laptop. I installed gnome-power-manager because I like to suspend my laptop when the lid is closed. When the close the lid and reopen it, the screen is black and the computer never suspends. This happens regardless of whether or not gnome-power-manger is running is the background.

Nov 8, 2010Did an upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and it was very smooth. One minor issue is now when I close my laptops lid (Sony Vaio) it does not sleep it just shuts downs. Same with habernate. It just shuts down all together. Then when I boot I get a brief error message to fast to read and the old 10.04 password screen rather than the new 10.10. This does not happen when I just shut down from inside Gnome and this never happened in 10.04. I am using generic video settings and all else works a charm.

I am not using the laptop screen (because it is small and flickers constantly) but only the external screen. When I shut the laptop lid the external screen blanks. There is no option in the power management dialog and the option "Activate screensaver when idle..." in the screensaver dialog is unchecked (which I would like to re-enable to blank screen when idle for x minutes). How can I get Ubuntu to leave my external screen on when the laptop lid is closed?

Jan 6, 2011I have a Dell Studio 1737 running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.My WiFi was working fine a few days ago until I tried to boot into another mode that allows me to boot into my other Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows Vista.I booted into that Ubuntu, which I thought had been overwritten when I was having problems and installed the one I am currently using.I shut down since it didn't have anything of any use to me at the moment, and I booted back into this current Ubuntu.Now, whenever I shut my laptop screen and open it back up to login, the WiFi is disconnected.(I was also having this problem on the Ubuntu that I booted into earlier, but that WiFi did this from the start on that one.)

I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Sep 30, 2015I'm running stock Debian 8.2 with GNOME DE on an Acer ES1-512 series laptop. Whenever I attempt to go into suspend, either by closing the laptop lid or holding ALT when clicking the power button in the top-left system menu on the desktop, my laptop briefly flashes the default GNOME lock screen, fades to black, and then hangs there. Usually, when my laptop would actually suspend, the power indicator light would change from blue to orange and slowly fade in and out. However, now it just sits on blue. There is no way to re-awaken the laptop from this state, and I have to force shutdown by holding the power button.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Freezes All The Time - Can't Fix It
Aug 16, 2010I'm dual-booting Vista and Ubuntu. Ubuntu freezes all the time, like every 5 mins so I don't ever use it. I just do a new installation every now and then to see if it fixes itself but it doesn't. It says that the battery has a low capacity, could this be the cause?it only freezes in Vista when I take out the charger, about at the same frequency as in Ubuntu.

Needless to say I tried it on my Toshiba NB305, and thought it might be good to see if I could also get better power usage from my wife's Toshiba A665. The problem is that when I run it on her laptop, it just totally hangs the system, and the caps lock light just sits there blinking. I am not sure why. Is it not designed for x64 systems? Any ideas, or similar problems? I think this laptop has an Intel i5 540M processor, and I am running Ubuntu 10.04x64 kernel version 2.6.32-29-generic.

At first I thought it was a Firefox issue because it happens most often when I'm on the web, but the computer also crashed on me while doing things in Synaptic, so it must be something else. I have an HP Pavilion z5000 with an Ati Radeon 9600 Mobility, 1.25 GB of RAM and 120 GB hard drive.

Oct 16, 2010When I'm running the laptop on battery the desktop freezes. It doesn't matter what program I use, it also happens when I just boot the system login and do nothing. I then have no mouse, no keyboard - so no key combination works. The only thing I can do is turn the laptop off using the power button and turn it back on. Usually the desktop freezes with in 5 min after login, but I also had one case were I was able to work for about 2 hours. When I plug in the power supply everything works fine.

Ubuntu :: Gnome / XORG Freezes When Closing Laptop Lid
May 17, 2011Gnome (or XORG, I'm not sure which name to give it) freezes up not always, but about once every 24 hours after I close the laptop's cover/lid. I know this happens when I close the lid rather than open it judging by the time the clock is locked at. The cursor will move around on the screen, but noting will react to it in any way. Other services such as FTP and Samba still work just fine when the computer is "locked down". Without more details to why the problem is occurring, I have no idea what to search for or where to get started solving the problem. I have attached the XORG logs (found in var/log) in case they are of any use.

On every installation I've cleaned the MBR and made new partitioning at all for a single system. Tried to partition the disk manually and tried the "use entire disk" option with the automatic wizard. Same results on all cases, when the installation process goes well at all.
I've tried also to leave the computer some hours with the "GRUB Loading." message, but it doesn't move and remains with the same screen/text. Cursor remains blinking all the time under the GRUB message. In all cases Control+Alt+Del works to reboot. With hundreds of installations made, I've never found the same situation. It would be so strange to be a hardware issue.
