Debian Configuration :: Fan Turns Off When Laptop Is Closed?
Jan 10, 2011
My IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop fan is constantly running when the laptop is open.I only use AC power.Fan turns off when laptop is closed, which I did by selecting Suspend in Power Management.
cpufreqd and cpufrequtils are installed. cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_governor' is 'ondemand'
Constant fan was not a problem in XP Pro; I just installed Debian one month ago.

I have a Lenovo T440p.I am on Debian Jessie. I use KDE as my desktop environment. My Wifi adapter is Intel® Dual Band Wireless-N 7260. I have configured my laptop not to suspend itself when the lid is down. I can verify that the laptop still runs when the lid is down, because I can hear the music if it is already playing. However the Wifi always disconnects when the lid is down. If I am downloading a file, it always gets interrupted.

setting up an SFTP server on debian, all the way down through step 3, though I did not "Match Group" I did Match User as I only need 1 user to have access to the SFTP server(did not continue on to step 4 and beyond as they did not apply to me) Im getting the error:
connection closed by server with exitcode 141
I get this when trying to log in via filezilla. I actually only got the 141 error on the first attempt, any attempts after that just says "could not connect to server". Username and password authentication goes through, so it is not a login info issue.Im running Debian squeeze, and that guide was for Lenny, that shouldnt matter, I dont think.

I have a java application that I wrote recently. It runs off port 9955. The application runs great on my mac server. When I installed it on my linux box i cant get to it from outside the box. A port scan shows the port as closed. I flushed my iptables, did not help. I can telnet into the app locally, from the server and it works great. I cannot telnet from outside the server. I have a reference to the application in /etc/services as a tcp port (which it is).
netstat shows it as listening
netstat --listen
tcp6 0 0 [::]: SimpleSocketTest [::]:* LISTEN
netstat -anp | grep 9955
tcp6 0 0 ::: 9955 :::* LISTEN 1484/java

When I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

Since I had updated to Lucid, I'm having some trouble with running my laptop on battery. It usually turns off when the battery notifier is still at 13%~18% (it is not shutting down, it is like when your battery runs out of energy). First I had thought that was a problem with the notifier and I was missing when the battery had no charge, but I kept looking at the notifier and suddenly when it had reached 15% my laptop just went down, without saving any job.
I've just upgraded to Lucid Lynx, running on a HP Pavilion dv4-1123us with 2.00 GHz Intel Core2 Duo T5800, 4GB RAM.
The battery is a 6-cell Lithium-Ion that came with the laptop.
I'd bought it about 1 year ago.

I have an issue running the openSUSE 11.2 liveCD KDE on a Dell Vostro 3500. It boots fine to command line. It seems to boot fine to KDE (I assume it doesn't hang cause the power button turns the laptop off without holding it). However the only thing I can see is a black screen. I've checked the CD with the tool included to the CD. The hardware of the laptop seems to be fine as well

The screen of my years-old HP laptop (running Natty) freezes and eventually turns black. Ctrl-Alt-F# works to switch to the terminals. My fan is even louder than usual. I spend some time fooling around with ps and kill and shut down some of the most resource-consuming processes, which quiets the fan a bit, but tty7 still shows a black screen except for my mouse pointer.
I finally decide to shut it down altogether, but then I think to myself, "Self, you've used the power switch to shut down before in this situation, but shouldn't there be a more proper way to do it in the terminal?" So I try shutdown, I have trouble with it, it proceeds to get hopelessly tangled up, and it looks like it's frozen up in mid-restart when I throw up my hands and decide to go for the old power-switch-for-five-seconds method after all. Now when I start the computer and select Ubuntu from GRUB, I get this:

suspend has always worked fine with 11.04 and now it stopped working a few days ago. How can I figure out what is going on? The display turns off but the computer never turns off and the only way to bring it back is to hold the power button down and then start it back up.

I like to play videos from my laptop on my tv in my bedroom using an hdmi cable. I used it in windows all the time. I have gotten Ubuntu configured to play the video and sound but I cant figure out a way to keep playing when I close the lid. Every time I do that it goes black. Also when I re-open it the laptop display is blank as well and will not come back on.
Under the power option when lid closed all it offers is
Blank screen
Suspend
Hibernate
shut down
In Windows I had a "do nothing"
Anyway to do this in Ubuntu?

When the close the lid and reopen it, the screen is black and the computer never suspends. This happens regardless of whether or not gnome-power-manger is running is the background.

Did an upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 and it was very smooth. One minor issue is now when I close my laptops lid (Sony Vaio) it does not sleep it just shuts downs. Same with habernate. It just shuts down all together. Then when I boot I get a brief error message to fast to read and the old 10.04 password screen rather than the new 10.10. This does not happen when I just shut down from inside Gnome and this never happened in 10.04. I am using generic video settings and all else works a charm.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a laptop. The laptop has an external 19" screen connected to it through the VGA port. I am not using the laptop screen (because it is small and flickers constantly) but only the external screen. When I shut the laptop lid the external screen blanks. There is no option in the power management dialog and the option "Activate screensaver when idle..." in the screensaver dialog is unchecked (which I would like to re-enable to blank screen when idle for x minutes). How can I get Ubuntu to leave my external screen on when the laptop lid is closed?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 6930 with an nVidia GeForce 9300m GS hooked up to my LG TV via HDMI.I have used the nVidia configuration tool to set the TV as a clone of my desktop and all appears to be working fine except for one thing. When I close my laptop lid, the TV also blanks.I know I could turn off my laptop monitor from within the nVidia config tool, but that is not what I want to do as I still use it; and besides, it's inconvenient to have to do it all the time.

I have a Dell Studio 1737 running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.My WiFi was working fine a few days ago until I tried to boot into another mode that allows me to boot into my other Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows Vista.I booted into that Ubuntu, which I thought had been overwritten when I was having problems and installed the one I am currently using.I shut down since it didn't have anything of any use to me at the moment, and I booted back into this current Ubuntu. Now, whenever I shut my laptop screen and open it back up to login, the WiFi is disconnected.(I was also having this problem on the Ubuntu that I booted into earlier, but that WiFi did this from the start on that one.)

I don't know if it sounds weird but I've been trying for weeks with no result. I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I looked through the gnome power management settings and when the laptop lid is closed it can only suspend, blank screen, hibernate or shutdown. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Its a brand new Acer aspire 5734Z with a 15,6 inches screen (wich is why I want to plug in my 19 inches monitor and work on bigger screen)

Until a while ago, I had to problems sshing into my laptop, whose static IP is 192.168.1.64. I scp'ed a few files from it to my desktop, whose static IP is 192.168.1.22. Then, suddenly, I started getting a "destination host unreachable" error. I also get the same error when I try to ping the laptop. I verified that the ssh daemon was running on the laptop, and even rebooted, but I am still getting the error.
I didn't install any upgrades or edit any configuration files on the laptop between the time that ssh was working and when it stopped working.
Otherwise, networking works on the laptop. In fact, I am writing this post from it. It is as if my laptop suddenly decided to block incoming traffic.

I have installed Squeeze on my laptop, an Acer 5315.The fans never turn on, and the laptop eventually overheats and shuts off. This is not a hardware problem, because Lenny, on another partition, works fine.I have poked around, and discovered that the temperature sensor, as reported by "acpi -V", and in /sys/devices/virtual/thermal, does not get updated. It seems to get read at boot, but the reading never changes, no matter how hot the machine gets.
Specifically, if the machine is cool, acpi reports 40 degrees C, and goes on reporting the same number until the machine overheats and shuts down.On the other hand, if the machine is hot (because it's been running without the fan), and I reboot, then the reading at boot is usually either 75 or 85, and the fan turns on during boot, and stays on, at high speed, until the next reboot, and the reading never changes during the whole time

I have been using debian from the past 3 years on a dell inspiron 1520 (2007 model). Yesterday i bought a dell inspiron 5548 (Early 2015). I have and ssd drive in old laptop that i want to move to the new laptop. To my knowledge i think i can replace the 1TB hard drive on new laptop with ssd, remove or reinstall or update drivers so the ssd will just run fine on new laptop without having to reinstall all the stuff and customization. Should i recompile the kernel in linux for new hardware? AFA windows 7(Dual booting Debian 8 and Windows 7), i think removing and reinstalling drivers will work fine.
Hardware: Old laptop specs: - New laptop

Processor: Core 2 duo 2Ghz - Core i5 5th gen. 5200U
RAM: DDR2 667MHz - DDR3 1600MHz

My Thinkpad T61 just got a Corsair X256 SSD in the ultrabay (where the CD usually is). This works well except for hibernating. Earlier I had a traditional HDD drive there which also hibernates just fine. After a failed hibernate the machine hangs with this message on screen:

Just resently I managed to activate internal bluetooth adapter. I'm not expert in command line and everything I could was done in GNOME. Same like most other systems an icon appears in panel bar whenever I used to type <modprobe omnibook ectype=14>. It took me some time to set everything with the kind help from URL... So the thing is that after fingering with some newly installed packages concerning b-tooth utilities that icon is gone and b-tooth is not active.

I'm running a Debian on a laptop (actually a netbook: Asus EEE 1001PX) as a cheap homeserver. However I'd like it to automatically "shutdown -h NOW" when I remove the AC plug (switch it off at the wall). Otherwise I have to ssh to it and call it myself, and that just sucks Can I somehow detect the removal of AC power and upon that run a script ?

I have Lenovo Thinkpad R400 laptop. It has Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor with ATI Radeon 3400 series graphics card and Intel Mobility chipset series 4 Integrated graphics controller. I have Squeeze ( stable) installed on it with kernel 2.6.32-5-686 .
My laptop gets very hot within 10 minutes whether I do any task or not. Also battery life is almost 40% as compared to Windows. I am more worried about temperature as it remains completely cool in windows. Mostly CPU load remains around 10% and CPU spends 99.99% time at 800MHz clock. I believe heat generated is by graphics card chipset.
Following are some information about my machine
