After doing a aptitude full-upgrade I no longer have the Debian menu showing in the Openbox menu. According to Obmenu, Debian is listed; it's just not showing when I right click. The upgrade brought a new version of Openbox so I assume that has something to do with it.

I installed debian with minimal packages (without an any X components). Later I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel , xserver-xorg-input-mouse, xserver-xorg-input-kbd ... and other X components through apt-get. Created a Xorg.conf file.
On execution of X, I see black screen without cursor. What are the other minimal packages that I need to install in order to run any window-manager like openbox.. ?

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 CLI with Openbox as the WM on my Dell laptop. I installed gnome-power-manager because I like to suspend my laptop when the lid is closed. When the close the lid and reopen it, the screen is black and the computer never suspends. This happens regardless of whether or not gnome-power-manger is running is the background.

I don't think I've messed up my settings because this is happening on both my computers. But it is still always a possibility. When I open a program, whether by command-line or by clicking somewhere, the windows don't always open completely inside the available desktop space. I mean the total space minus the task bar along the bottom. Firefox always opens with the bottom margin unreachable. kdenlive opens half out of the screen towards the right and the bottom. It is easy to drag them back where they belong, but always having to do this, with eventually a resize needed, to see the whole window of the program is getting tedious

I am having trouble converting a latex file to pdf with the precision I am looking for. I want strict control of the margins for both the outputted pdf and the printed page but currently it looks like there is a discrepancy between the two. I set the margins with the geometry package, i.e.
Code:
usepackage[left=.5in,right=.5in,top=.5in,bottom=.5in]{geometry} and then have tried converting to pdf by both the dvipdf route and the dvips --> ps2pdf route. All of these output files look identical through evince, however when I physically print the pdf the margins are roughly double the size I want. When I print the ps version the margins are exactly what I want. Therefore I expect the problem is obviously in ps2pdf.
I am printing on letter paper (8.5 x 11), which I have tried to explicitly set using
Code:
ps2pdf -sPAPERSIZE=letter foo.ps
with no luck.
My goal is to have a pdf for the sake of compatibility. I also do not want to use pdflatex for various reasons. Does anyone have any idea why this would be happening? What options have to be set that I don't know about. I tried searching around for a while but mostly found solutions involving a mistake papersize (a4 vs letter) changes, so sorry if this is RTFM.

I have set up an HP 5M networked printer. The test page works fine, and the defaults are all set correctly. But when I try to print from my own java programs, the paper size is set to letter, and the margins are all set to 2.54 mm. I can change the paper size to A4 (but I have to do it EVERY time). And the margins won't even let me change them. I type in 0, click in the next field, and the value changes straight back to 2.54. It has been this way for at least the last two releases of Ubuntu.

I have an HP Deskjet D1460. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and HPLIP 3.10.2 that came with the distro. I am in a plan of moving my windows PC to ubuntu in my bussiness, and this is the first of them. Trying to solve all the problems before converting a second one. All seems to work quite well and almost out of the box... and that is a huge step from the last distro i tryied 2 years ago. So, my difficulty now resides on the printing. I am using a small VFox program that manage some of the aspects of the bussiness, in wine. It works without problems, but... when I print, all the pages get printed like 1cm below than when it was printed under windows. The problem is, that I use the printer to fill some forms that came pre-printed, and now, I am printing over the other text instead of the white spaces. I read a little, and try to adjust the HWMargins and the ImageableArea in the ppd of /etc/cups/ppd/ but it was like if I was doing nothing. Do I miss a step? Do I need to restart a service or something after changing the ppd? The margings when using the printer gui from Ubuntu are all in 0, and for that i need like a minus something.

Since upgrading to openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64) KDE: 4.6.3 I find that any changes made in the KDE Printer --> Properties --> Margins dialogue with Konqueror, Kate, Kwrite, etc. are not persistent. Such changes are persistent in openSUSE 11.3 (x86_64) KDE: 4.4.4.
Consequently I must open the Printer --> Properties --> Margins dialogue and change the default margin setting (4.23 mm) four times (TBLR) for each print job.
A similar issue with non-persistent duplex printing was solved by installing system-config-printer but that does not provide an option to reset the default margin settings.
I have made the usual searches and checked the printer pages in the SDB. There are some related bug reports on openSUSE, KDE and QT bug tracking systems that make interesting reading (!) but I did not find a user level solution for non-persistent margins.
How are the default KDE print margins set and can they be changed?

I'm trying to print a PDF from Evince it don't work at all...
When I try to print in grayscale it send a blank paper to the printer...When I try to print anything in color I can't change the margin of the paper, it always put like ZERO margin and the text go throw the end of the paper.
The paper size is A5 (Half A4) and the printer is in LAN in a Windows computer.
It's me or when I print in grayscale it print faster? So, it's an update or something? Because last time I printed from Ubuntu (like a month ago) it printed perfectly OK in grayscale (I don't know about the margin).

I use kate for almost all my text editing (not word processing). I love it, but it defaults to margins that don't work on my printers. Things get cut off at the top and bottom of the page. The printer works fine with all my other applications - most of those allow the margins to be set in the application.
In kate, I can go to printer properties and set the margins to something that will work, but I have to do it every time I print.
Is there some way around this?
I read some posts elsewhere about using enscript. I know how to do that, but not from within kate.

the output of the "mount" command is as follows:

I was told that the TurboTax DRM overwrites a boot sector on the first hard drive, possibly causing problems to the "non-windows" OS. Up to now I had used TT on a W2K only machine. Now that I have converted the whole office to Ubuntu or dual boot, I don't have the option anymore.

I'm thinking about upgrading my Windows Vista to Windows 7. I rarely ever use it but I figured that when I do have to use it I would rather use Windows 7.
Will it mess up Ubuntu or GRUB when I do this? Like GRUB not recognizing Ubuntu any more? I don't really know but I just wanted to ask this here just in case.

Using Kubuntu 10.04 here
I've been trying to make my microphone work and so I've pretty much messed around with the mixer (KMixer), mainly adding channels to the "equalizer" and checking and clearing "capture" boxes. After I did that my sound "disappeared" - I have no sound whatsoever (not even Kubuntu's initialization sound).
How can I fix this? Is it possible to go back to the "default" configuration?

Luckily, I have a backup copy.Is it safe to just paste the backup into any old file and "cp <file> /etc/passwd", or is there any special procedure? As I understand it, things are fine for now but if I restart very bad things will happen since root is gone and such

I have a new Asus Eee Pc 1215n and installed on it Ubuntu 10.10. This way it was configured as dual-boot with 4 partitions. One for Windows7 one for Windows recovery, one for Linux swap and one ext4 for Ubuntu.Everything was working fine until I installed the ext2fsd driver on Windows. It couldn't read the ext4 partition properly so I played with the options. There I tried changing the ext partition's type from "Linux" to "Linux extend" (which was obviously wrong). After the reboot I get a message when the computer starts up saying "error: partition not found" and in the next line "grub rescue>" with a dash flashing but without any recognizable commands.
I tried reinstalling grub from the Ubuntu 10.10 live cd following these instructions but now I get exactly the same screen, this time saying "error: file not found." instead. What was weird was that gparted in the live Ubuntu couldn't see any partition in the hard drive. It appeared like the whole space was unallocated. When I type 'help' in "grub rescue" it tells me "unknown command". When I type 'ls' it returns: (hd0) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1)I think this might be a clue of what is going on since all the partitions should not be flagged as msdos.

I tryied to modify the root password, but instead of using the "passwd" command, i tried to use "usermod -p", without knowing what outcome exactly i would get. But since then, i can't log as root, neither with my old neither with my new password. And i can't install absolutely nothing on my machine.
Please, help me... i have a test next wednesday, and i can't work in my blueprint. In appendix, i've uploaded a print screen of the sequence commands, for you to be able to explain me this phenomenom and to tell me how to solve it.

I played a bit with partitions. I'm not an experienced Ubuntu user, neither I have solid understanding of partitioning. And I hardly remember exact actions that led to this problem. I remember that I saw a warning in GParted that said that the partition was out of bounds or something.. But I followed some solution that I found on ubuntuforums and used fdisk to fix that. So, after installation of Ubuntu I couldn't boot into WindowsXP (after choosing Windows entry in grub2 menu I see only blinking cursor on black screen). But what's more important that I can easily mount Windows partition from Ubuntu. Also I tried to boot from Windows repair console and used FIXBOOT command, and copied[url].... and [url].... files to no avail..Here is the summary of what I got now:
Code:
sudo fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylinders[code].....

I've had some crap experience (my fault) with grub before and would like to make sure I have a plan. I've downloaded the 10.10 64 bit. Can I simply boot and install 10.10 64 bit without concern of messing up grub? Horror story: Installed ubuntu once before with dual boot and somehow grub couldn't find windows

I'd like to know if there's a way, an option or something that will allow me to keep my .desktop files in /usr/share/applications untouched when I upgrade their programs. For example, I only want Chromium to appear in XFCE (for all usersdded the OnlyShowIn=XFCE" option to its .desktop file. The problem is that aptitude upgraded Chromium and reverted its desktop file back to its original configuration. Of course, I went ahead and added the same option again, but I'd like to know if there's a way to changs behavior of aptitude. I don't want to imagine the work I'll have to do again when they release a new version of KDE in the repos and I have to edit all of those files again. searched the forums for ".desktop files" and also for "/usr/share/applications" and got no significant results in the first 10 pages. The same with google. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction. Would it be a possible approach to add a directory to /etc/ to keep my settings fixed, the way there's an /etc/menu?

For a long time, on my netbook Asus EEE pc1000 working fine with my wireless (connecting WEP, WPA). Running with kernel 2.6.29 + rta2860sta v2.2 (package downloaded from the software repository , a user repository)
After somes updates (kernel mainly), all stop working. So I recompile the module v2.2 but don't work. I download from the ralink site the last version , recompile and installed , and appear work fine, but I don't know why the opensuse like to be very annoying and the knetworkmanager don't recognize the device. So , again I download a package from a user repository with the version 2.3 , what appear starts working again. Knetworkmanager recognize the device, but isn't cappable to connect in a WEP network. With WPA works fine.
If I disable the device in knetworkmanager and try configure manually , sometimes work. Probably have some sequence of command what I don't figure out what is. To configure WEP network before this problems I always use only the "iwconfig" command. But I try with "iwconfig" and "iwpriv" and don't work. So , afiter trying a lot of sequence, now I got connected to WEP network, but is very weird how they show this connection,

a while ago, Network manager kept on messing around and disconnecting me etc. I attempted to setup a static network (wired) and since then, everything worked fine. I also have apache running and have had no problems with that. I know there were some apache auto updates this week but I have been doing no dev work. I went to check out one of my local sites to do some work yesterday and there was just nothing happening.
I checked everything with apache, it is all running etc. I have stripped back the conf files to be clean and fresh and netstat is showing apache as listening on 127.0.0.1:80 as it should for a single default site that I have on there now. BUT if I try to ping localhost by name or by 127.0.0.1 I am getting "Destination Port Unreachable" Since I have been trying to fix this, I have been trawling the internet to try and clean up my network setup from scratch (I have also had problems with https sites that has turned up to be the MTU setting on my eth0 interface) but to be honest I am not sure exactly what should be set between ifconfig, route, netstat and apache. should I be able to ping localhost independantly of running apache2 (i.e if it is stopped) or would a successful ping rely on apache working correctly.
