View 1 RepliesRecently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

i have a acer 8930g laptop with mint 7 installed can't get sound to work. found my way round the nvidia graphics to get the screen to work but lost when it came to get the pc speakers and sound card to worki have set the preferences to auto detect but at a loss as to the logical steps i need to take.

I dual boot with windows xp and ubuntu 9.10. When using windows my wireless works fine but when using ubuntu my wireless does not work. The first time ubuntu was loaded the wireless was working and then while I was trying to figure out how to load a program I messed up a grub file. As I couldn't fix it I just reinstalled Ubuntu and since then my wireless is inoperable in Ubuntu only.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI bought a netbook and couldn't handle windows xp at all, so installed ubuntu 9.10, but the wireless network icon doesn't appear on the top of the screen like it should, presumably because ubuntu doesn't automatically recognize whatever card is in there. This is an asus 1001-HA. could anyone assist me with getting this thing up and running on a wireless network?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just finished installing a fresh install of openSuse on my old Compaq Presario V2600 laptop. The problem is, for some reason, it always boots to the terminal instead of starting x and the gnome desktop environment. I have to manually start x every time with the command startx. Then, after x has been started, the display is an unusually low resolution, and it wont let me change it. I tried running sax2 -r -m 0=vesa but this did not help fix the problem.
The second problem I am having is that my integrated wireless on the laptop does not work. It is a Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN. Please help with this as well (I know I will probably have to use proprietary drivers just like I did in Ubuntu, but I can't find how to install these drivers under openSuse.) If you need to know more about the specs of my laptop, here you go:

I've got an old laptop wich wireless adapter is a Gigabyte GN-WI01 GS MINI PCI(its chipset is Realtek RTL8169/8110, I believe) and I'm not able to make it run in Wifislax 3.1 Live CD. I downloaded the linux drivers for it and tried to install them following the instructions but when it came the time to execute configure.sh it told me that I had to actualize some kind of packets first(GK+ or something like that can't remember ). I also have another wireless usb adapter that I tried to use too. It's a Linksys WUSB54g v4(chipset: rt2570). I tried to follow a guide I found about making run an adapter like that on Wifislax 3.1 but when I had to "Force ralink rt73 on rt2500" it doesn't appear on my Live CD version, it appears "Force ralink rt73 on rt2570", dunno if it has something to be but I get an error while making it.
I don't know if it has to be with my laptop, my wireless adapters or my way of following the steps. If it has to be with my adapters I would like to buy some new one(not very expensive) that I won't have any problems running it on Wifislax and that will work on my old laptop(cause I just have that one and can't afford a new one).
I cannot get wireless to work on my friends HP Compaq 6735s Laptop with Linux Mint 9. The wireless button is lit up. I can use my Desktop USB wireless adapter alright.

just installed ubuntu on a dell inspiron 6400 but the wireless doesnt work.
However, it works 100% when running from the live cd.
Can i install/copy the driver from livecd to hard drive, or is there another soultion for this?
I installed the Ubuntu 10.04 on my old Compaq v2000 but the Internet did not work so I installed the win7.

The main problem I am having at the time is the wireless button will not turn on so there for I have no internet access. The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.

Now the entry for the Wireless Broadband is gone, and the tab for it is greyed out as well.I would be happy to submit this as a bug and assist with the debugging process.

I have no wireless WIFI-router at home, so I have to use the laptop as a router to the internet. I know I have to enter a static IP adres and my router's address, but where ? I haven't found any place under network tools to do this, only saw some fields with SSID's and MAC addresses to fill in.

so it seems that opensuse knows my hardware but networkmanager doesn't! I have all broadcom packages installed as well as kernel-firmware installed.
I have Lenovo G550 and openSUSE 11.4. Everything's ok, wifi without problems, I could connect to anywhere I wanted to, but yesterday while laptop was running and was connected actually by wire to internet, after removing the wire I realized that I cannot connect to wifi (the laptop was hibernated during night) - even the light diode in the front of the laptop was not shining. I went to yast and realized that the wlan0 isn't enabled and there's new eth1 port. But the wlan by ifup I cannot start and the eth1 I cannot start as well.

I've just installed ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, and when I'm on vim, I can use arrow key normally in command mode, but in editing mode, if I use them, it print a letter, capital case + new line and doesn't move the cursor.
In putty I would try to play with the different type of keyboard settings (ESC[~, Linux, Xterm R6, VT400 etc...), but here, I don't know what to do.
At the installation time, I choose French/French keyboard.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 10.04 on a dell inspiron laptop, but the wireless adapter will not work. I uses a broadcom BCM4312. When I click on the wireless icon, it says "firmware missing". Normally, I would connect to look for proprietary drivers, but my problem is that I live in an apartment complex with only wifi.
So my question is, A) does this sound like a driver problem, and B) if so, how can I get the necessary driver installed (after downloading it with another laptop) when I use lshw, it does show the wireless device, by says that it is disabled. I tried following the directions here [URL]... (changing "ieee80211_crypt_tkip" with "lib80211_crypt_tkip" due to the rename in 2.6.29. I think that is correct), but that did not work either.
got a laptop of hp with amd neo m40 pro and 2gb ram.. with vista installed.the worst OS.... i want to install linux with dual boot since am not expert in linux.these are the specs:
hard disk is 250 gb
c-155gb , d which is for recovery is 10.6gb, e-46.8gb
and an unallocated disk of 20gb
tried to install fedora which couldnt recognize the hard disk partition got ubuntu and tried.. but i dont know where it got installed now my 20 gb unallocated disk is showing as two partitions one of which is 1 gb and the rest is 18gb. how to uninstall ubuntu now. i want to repartition it and install it in proper way is 20gb enough.
I've installed 11.4 on the laptop. So far there hasn't been a huge leap of difference between the 11.3 and 11.4. But now I can't use Skype. It's installed and all of that. But whenever I open it, nothing happens.

View 7 Replies View RelatedThis morning I installed Slackware 13 i386 and started configuring it. I've got a problem as my laptop has turned off unexpectedly twice since I started using Slack 13. I don't know if it's related to Slackware 13 but it has never happened before on this laptop with Slackware 12.2 or any other system. The first guess would be overheating. I checked the laptop's BIOS but could not find anything related to cooling down.
The laptop seems quite hot but it's nothing unusual for it. I also noticed that acpi is not installed by default. Would it make much difference? The laptop is pretty new (6 months) and the cooling module seems to be clean. The only thing that differs from my previous installations is that for the first time I installed ATI's fglrx and enabled desktop effects. Could it be a buggy video driver?
