just installed ubuntu on a dell inspiron 6400 but the wireless doesnt work.
However, it works 100% when running from the live cd.
Can i install/copy the driver from livecd to hard drive, or is there another soultion for this?
i've installed openSUSE 11.2/KDE. Installation process finishes with fun. The first thing that i wanted in my laptop don't work. That's wireless internet. I've google and google. saw many thereds in openSUSE forms and check what i understand after reading thereds. Finally what i understand is i've to install firmware. i can use internet in my Laptop. My laptop is only connected with wireless. No cable connection avilable here. Wireless is functioning well in windows 7 but in openSuSe 11.2 it is not functioning. I've got a wireless problem on my laptop (dell inspiron 6400).I don't know when exactly and why, but every time I watch a video on ..... or allostreaming, after a while (a few minutes), my wireless disconnect and it's impossible to get back any connexion. The only solution I have is to reboot my computer.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 6400 which had been running Ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) perfectly.Today I upgraded it to Natty and the wifi now refuses to work. Details: While no Additional Drivers were needed on 10.10, upon installing Natty it prompted me to install "Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver". Now when it's active I don't even have the option 'Enable Wireless' (only Enable Networking). If I disable STA the Enable Wireless option comes back, yet I can't actually search for wifi networks or connect to my saved one. The keyboard key to enable/disable wireless also does nothing.
I can take this laptop to somewhere with an ethernet connection for an afternoon if need be, but am currently stumped as to what to do. Obviously I know this machine can handle Wifi under Ubuntu - it's definitely a Natty problem.

My brother has just installed 9.10 on his Inspiron 6400 and would like to have a dual screen setup using both the laptop display and a flatscreen attached to the VGA socket. Using the standard display options, the two displays are recognised and when the 'mirror screens' option is disabled then settings applied it works to the extent of allowing the cursor to move between the two monitors; however the monitors display nothing except a black screen and the cursor.
I've updated everything to the current version, had a look for restricted drivers (none are suggested by the GUI tool thing) and checked both displays work (both independently and as mirrored). I also had a look for an xorg.conf to poke around in but there wasn't one there.
My dell inspiron 1150 internal wireless won't work and ive tried ndiswrapper. link to an open source driver?

After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.
I have install 64bit version of Fedora 12 on a new Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell 1397 wireless card. It actually uses a Broadcom BCM4312 chip.

I just completed installing openSuse 11.1 I followed the detailed steps given in Getting Your Wireless to Work When I try to scan for available APs in the vicinity, I get the following error.

I have loaded the latest version of opensuse and I have everything working but I cannot connect to my wireless WPA2 network. I have downloaded the bcm43xx firmware using the method /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware I then restarted the network. The computer will now read the network card and will find networks but I cannot get it to connect at all. At first it would connect using ifup in yast but would disconnect after a few seconds. It would never connect through NM. I have a usb network card that works just fine. I am lost as to how to fix this problem.

It used to work fine before when i was using ubuntu 9.04 and even after i updated to 9.10, but then that happened. I added the notification area back to the panel but now ubuntu cannot even find any wireless networks. When i connect a LAN cable to my laptop the internet works fine, but the wireless networks area in the network icon is grayed out and it doesn't show any wireless networks. View 2 Replies View Relatedi have to say that i'm not too familiar with Ubuntu... or Linux in general . I've installed it once, just to test it out but I didn't know how to use it so i just reinstalled windows. The other night, i was bored and decided i wanted to re-try Ubuntu and to my suprise, i found Wubi. I love ubuntu now and i made the decision to permanently switch over to ubuntu.
At first, my wireless wasn't working, but there was a quick fix. All i had to do was go to the Synaptic Package Manager, Reload, and search for "Broadcom." I installed the Broadcom STA Wireless driver and i was online within a couple of minutes. I then played around for a couple of hours before turning my laptop off. But, this morning, when i turned it back on...I coudlnt' connect. When i click the little connection icon in the top right, i see the message "Wireless is disabled".
There is a key on my computer that turns the wireless card on or off, and i have tried it. It doesn't work. I have reinstalled the broadcom driver and it doesn't work. I've rebooted...And it doesn't work. I don't know enough about linux to get a solution and every other solution i find on the internet doesn't work.
I have seen in other threads that you guys usually ask for a a couple of things from the user. ifconfig and the sudo lshw -C network so i have included them below. I also looked into the ubuntu help documentation and it told me to do the lspci command.
