General :: Installing Ubuntu In Pre Vista Installed Laptop?

got a laptop of hp with amd neo m40 pro and 2gb ram.. with vista installed.the worst OS.... i want to install linux with dual boot since am not expert in linux.these are the specs:
hard disk is 250 gb
c-155gb , d which is for recovery is 10.6gb, e-46.8gb
and an unallocated disk of 20gb
tried to install fedora which couldnt recognize the hard disk partition got ubuntu and tried.. but i dont know where it got installed now my 20 gb unallocated disk is showing as two partitions one of which is 1 gb and the rest is 18gb. how to uninstall ubuntu now. i want to repartition it and install it in proper way is 20gb enough.
I am trying to install openSuse 11.2 on my laptop which has Windows Vista installed. I don't want to delete my Windows Vista that is installed. provide instructions on how to do this?
I'm currently trying to add OpenSUSE to my Laptop which already has Vista Ultimate installed, hoping I will end up with a dual boot system. Currently, my HD is divided into four partition: Vista Ultimate with Bitlocker enabled needs two partitions - one for the unencrypted boot files, and one for the rest of the system. Then I have an unencrypted partition for data that I don't want encrypted, and finally the partition in which I plan to install Linux.
I have already installed OpenSUSE to that fourth partition, and it worked just fine. But now, I'd like to reinstall with LVM, so that I can use encryption as well. Upon installation, however, I get the following error: Code: Error Failure occurred during following action: Creating volume group system fromv System error code was: -4004 I'm wondering if this is because I'm running out of (primary?) partitions? Seems like LVM, just like Vista Ultimate, needs two partitions, one for the boot files and one for the rest of the system. I've read something about a PC drive only being able to hold four partitions, so I'm wondering if I need to get rid of that extra unencrypted partition I have in order to get OpenSUSE with LVM installed. Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC running Vista Home Basic. I installed to run as a dual boot but now I can only boot into Ubuntu. I have tried to run the recovery disk for Vista and it errors out also..
I installed Oracle Linux 5 and now I can not boot into Vista. However if I use Debian Live CD Vista is there and looks fine (as far as I can see). Is there a way I can use a live CD to fix grub? I have googled it but none of the commands I found worked.
vista was deleted there is no dual boot i see grub loading when reboot how can i uninstall ubuntu, i tried doing a boot from cd with recovery disc but get error oxd0000017 what to do now.

I have sony vaio laptop which is vista preloaded. But I don't want windows vista and want to install ubuntu and windows xp on complete hard disk. Can I remove window vista completely? Will be any problem in future if I remove vista completely? And at last, is my laptop hardware vista completable and may give problem? I urgently want ubuntu and don't want virtual os as ubuntu...
I have Fedora 14 on my old desktop,Thats it no other OS. Is there a way i can downlosd packages to usb on my vista laptop then install to my dasktop. you know things like mplayer and all the codes.
I've not been able to find a solution on the forums, so thought I'd post. My DELL PC came with Vista installed and I then added Ubuntu. This seemed to work fine although I didn't really use Ubuntu too much. Then last week I decide to replace Ubuntu with Fedora 12. I selected the replace existing Linux option during the install process.
After installation, Grub displayed 2 options: Fedora and Other. Fedora was fine, other didn't boot. After readinf around I added another option for vista, but this results in the following error: Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

I am trying to install Fedora on my machine, Vista currently installed. During the install process, I select the partition which I created, but install program says I must define a ROOT partition. How do I do this?
I had two OS in laptop windows vista and linux mint and when I used to start my computer I used to get different option for os like linux mint, linux mint memory check, windows vista etc.. but because of virus windows vista got crashed so I formatted disk drive C: which were containing windows vista and reinstalled fresh copy of vista.. but now when I start my computer vista start automatically, I do not see GRUB options to run windows os or linux mint..Is there a way to reinstall GRUB to get options like I used to get before formatting ?
Right so my situation is a little obscure and from all the posts I've read through I can't find one that suits me well enough.My PC's hard drive recently went on the fritz so I backed up all my data, got a brand new Terrabyte hard drive and then put all my stuff on there. I also plugged in the fault drive as a secondary and ahev cleared most of the stuff off it. It's separated into two partitions; E: and F: but together make about 600 gigs. I then have two external Terrabyte hard drives, it's a long story but their connected via USB.
Now I really like the idea fo getting to grips with Linux. I don't want to use a LIVE CD, I've done that already and I want to see how I get along using it as a proper OS. I also really need to keep the Windows Vista for several reasons, most importantly for iTunes which I use to keep my iPhone and iPad up to date and I've heard iTunes and linux don't get along too well, even with programs like WINE. So obviously I'm looking to dual boot and keep all my data but what would be the best way to go about it? Stick it on my primary drive? Or on my slightly faulty drive? Or on one of my two externals? On the bright side, because I'm on a fairly new hard drive, my Vista runs really smoothly, and so I shouldn't encounter too many bugs that windows is renowned for a long the way...
I'd also like to be able to access all my data from both OSs so I don't have to keep jumping from one OS to another. Is that possible? or simple to accomplish?I have a pretty good Nvidia graphics card too, so I'd appreciate it if someone could explain how I get XGl working on Fedora once it's all set up.
Ive been using Ubuntu(and its derivitives) since Vista BSOD'd on me while working on an important paper(trapped on the HD) back in October and and have loved it since. However in light of coming waves in the world of Gnome, I'm looking at my options in the event the Gnome shell 3 /Unity (which seem to me like a divided political party -my domain of geekiness stretches from history to computers- )go south.
I am looking for a non gnome options for then. For now i'm thinking of switching to KDE with OpenSuse (since Kbuntu seems poorly integrated from what i've heard) which I've found very little negative about other than the entire Microsoft>mono affair. What are the main difference in Kde and Suse when compared to run of the mill Ubuntu. this includes but is not limited to
>File management (will the configuration files in my home folder be compatible?) >package management( How does suse go about doing this?) >Window management (Windows style or mac style) >miscellaneous commands commonly used (i.e sudo, mkdir, rm etc)
And finally how will it run on a laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545) that originally was built with vista in mind? Will compiz still work as well as it does in gnome? on a side note: how does kde differ from gnome other than appearance differ in relation to the average jane ( my sister, the other user of my laptop, though she mainly uses it for firefox)
Vista won't start but Ubuntu will, all her documents are gone because my sister stepped on our disk, I can't bring files over to Ubuntu for them because the entire partion for Vista deleted itself automatically.
My brother bought an Acer Laptop which was configured with Ubuntu Dual boot using Grub with Vista Home Premium. He asked me re remove Ubuntu which I thought I could do by simply using the recovery disk to restore the Laptop to the factory condition. This didn't work and I now find that Vista will not boot at all, although Ubunto does. How to remove Ubuntu and put this back to Vista only? I have never used Ubuntu before so in this field I am a complete novice.
i have a acer 8930g laptop with mint 7 installed can't get sound to work. found my way round the nvidia graphics to get the screen to work but lost when it came to get the pc speakers and sound card to worki have set the preferences to auto detect but at a loss as to the logical steps i need to take.
I know next to nothing about ubuntu, but heres what's going on:So i have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that came with Vista on it, i hated Vista so i found out about Ubuntu and had downloaded it on my old laptop with XP so i could test it out first (I dualbooted it and could easily switch from XP to ubuntu) so i figured i would dual boot it with my Toshiba ( originally a vista ). Well i have had ubuntu on this computer for about a year i'd say and i have loved it and never thought Vista, but now i kind of want to at least use it again, but i have no idea. On my other computer it would take me to GRUB and i could just pick..but on this computer it only lets me use ubuntu..Is it possible that when i installed ubuntu it deleted vista?
I have what may appear an odd question. I have never installed Linux before, but I'm very impressed with the Ubuntu philosophy and this forum so I thought I'd give it a shot. I have a Windows wifi network at home with three laptops: One is Windows 7 and the other two are running Vista. My wife uses the Windows 7 laptop and I am using one of the Vista boxes, with the other one currently running in a spare room. I'd like to use the Vista box as a NAS (for our photos, backups, etc) but I need to keep Vista on it for a variety of reasons. Just hooking up the USB drives to the Vista laptop and sharing them out isn't really the way I want to go, and besides it wouldn't let me install Linux...
What I'd like to do is install Ubuntu into VMWare Player or VirtualBox and have it share out the USB drives on the network. The drives are NTFS and I'd like to keep them that way, because I'd like the flexibility of being able to plug them directly into one of our laptops if need be, or access them from the Vista host OS. I understand I'll need to install SAMBA to get this shared out, and I found a tutorial for that so I can try that out. I did download and play around with FreeNAS, but it has lots of issues with NTFS corruption whereas Linux has the NTFS driver for a few years now. I haven't tried an Openfiler appliance yet but that may be a plug-and-play option as well. My questions are:..........
I'm new to linux and have an old laptop did clean reinstall windows 98 but no updates, and now burnt iso image to cd on other pc and used it to try running puppy linux 3.01 on the compaq armada laptop (spec 56.0MB RAM, AMD-K6(tm)-III Processor used space 645MB free 3.80GB). I chose this older version as I think I'd read that this is more suitable for older slow computers.
I am interested in running linux fully without windows 98 or with it. Running from CD I have to select Xvesa I think as Xorg didn't seem to work. Tried partitioning but in GParted find myself unable to amend the size of partitions - got yellow exclamation mark next to the partitions. What I see is: greyed out unallocated 7.38MB, then /dev/hda1 yellow exclamation mark filesystem unknown 206.72MB, /dev/hda2 yellow exclamation fat32 4.45GB.
It does not allow resizing when I try. Associated with the yellow exclamation marks is the warning "unable to read the contents of this filesystem! Because of this some operations may be unavailable. I have done a defragment of C in windows already. (Also haven't been able to connect to internet on linnux with my wireless card.)
Is there a way I can run my Windows Vista operating system that is already installed, on a virtual machine while on Ubuntu? I don't want to keep rebooting. The only reason I have my Vista partition is for Maplestory. ( A game that has gameguard which can't run under wine)
i had Windows Vista Ultimate SP2 160 GB HDD, 1GB RAM,INTEL DUAL CORE One of my friend told that UBUNTU is also a better OS and is an open source programme and u can use alternately both Ubuntu or VISTA,so i downloaded the disk image for Ubuntu 10.10 and burned it on a CD. i played it first on Windows Vista so it asked some 3 options of that i chose an option which downloaded Ubuntu Cd helper ,then i selected the first option something 'demo and install' it said to reboot the computer i reboooted it by selecting option reboot now and finishing it,after the computer was restarted.it asked me options for selecting Ubuntu or Windows Vista,i selected Ubuntu, i saw ubuntu is started which was the least time i could see a new Os is started, then i tought i should install it ,after selecting install it ,there came an option to drag option window's vertical line to right or left to increase or decrease the partition for ubuntu and on another side where something 'NTFS' was written i thought it must be for windows i dragged Ubuntu to maximum(5.23GB) left 37.3 GB for NTFS dev and i continued forward, left it for some process going on, the ubuntu was installed i think ,it also asked for some softwares to be installed i let them be installed and let all process finish after looking some featuers of Ubuntu ,i wanted to go back to windows vista but when i restarted computer it didnt asked me an option for selecting OS 'Ubuntu' or 'Vista' as it had asked me before. it directly started Ubuntu and asked for same options of software to installed ,i removed th CD and Tried again but still i couldnt see anything for Vista,when i checked properties of 'File System' it was written that 2.3 GB is covered and rest 157 GB is free,i m scared that i have deleted all the data of VIsta and Vista OS too,Can i get my VISTA BACK?,it is ok if i dont get anything of Ubuntu,i had many of important files too in my vista.is really my pc been formatted completely,?
from last week i m searching for its solution on internet i m frustrated a lot, many of the contain particular solution but for before versions of Ubuntu,i just want My vista and vista files back .One of the solutions also contained inserting DVD of vista and some procedure but my DVD player isnt working but CD player is working.i hope some of my inernet friends come to me as a saviour please.and one note i don't know what is GRUB or all other stuffs as i m knowing very bit of installing OS
I have installed UBUNTU 10.0.4 on my HP Laptop which has Windows Vista. When I select Windows Vista, my Wireless is working properly and Wireless turned ON icon with light is showing up. But when I select UBUNTU, I couldn't able see WIRELESS. Its showing as OFF and When I tap on Wirless ikon, its NOT turning ON. how to ENABLE Wireless options on my HP Laptop with Vista in it. PS: I have both VISTA and UBUNTU on my machine.
I've just joined the linux gang(or I am trying to) I have
-downloaded desktop/netbook edtion
-burned to dvd using infrarecord
-changed bios settings to boot from cd
-didn't work
-used the override feature that gives a bootlist at splash screen but cd drive not listed so I assume the cd is not recognised as a boot disk
-tried the usb/cd maker that comes with in the rar but its looking for the cd image...an .iso file, but I can't find one in folder.
ubuntu says I can run a trial from the cd alongside vista but when I open the executable it just offers intall, no try and if selected starts to install I think I can do the partition thing if I have to but I don't want any vista running on my machine.
On a fresh Fedora 13 install, I have done:su yum install vncand:su yum install vnc-serveryum installs tigervnc and tigervnc-server with no errors. However, when I go into /etc/sysconfig/ to edit vncservers, vncservers does not exist. Also, there is no vnc service listed in the services, and doing:sudo service vncserver restartreturns the message:vncserver: unrecognized service
ive installed ubuntu for netbook on my laptop, everything went fine, it installed ok, and it was all good, until i tried clicking on the icon im supposed to click on to get conncected to wifi. where it's supposed to have various wireless networks it says "device not ready (firmware missing)" and ive tried everything i can think of to get it working, but it wont work. the same thing happens with my desktop computer, but with ubuntu desktop 10.10 and linux mint... but with the desktop, its probably just a case of finding drivers for my specific wireless adapter, in which case can anyone tell me where i can find the driver for a belkin F6D4050ea for linux?
Everytime I try to boot it after a restart, it goes through the setup process until it reaches the following blue-screen error message:
"A Problem Has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".
I am DEF keeping Ubuntu as my primary. I just want to have XP (Not Vista) for things that Ubuntu can't do (or can't do as effectively with my level of user ability -- yet ).
