General :: Reinstall Ubuntu 9.10 On Laptop Wireless Won't Work
Jan 8, 2010
I dual boot with windows xp and ubuntu 9.10. When using windows my wireless works fine but when using ubuntu my wireless does not work. The first time ubuntu was loaded the wireless was working and then while I was trying to figure out how to load a program I messed up a grub file. As I couldn't fix it I just reinstalled Ubuntu and since then my wireless is inoperable in Ubuntu only.

After running wireless for years my system crashed, I've had to re install lenny and now what ever I try I can't get the wireless to work. I'm running Lenny, kernel 2.6.26-2-686 but when I start up it doesn't seem to be able to start the wireless, whatever I do from gnome wireless tools,
dmesg | grep -i iwl
shows this

Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

I plan to reinstall linux (CentOS 5.2 = RHEL5) in my laptop because of insufficient diskspace partition in /. Only allocate 8.8G for /root and the rest to /app/Current my kernel version is 2.6.28, which are latest than the CentOS release which is 2.6.18, I think. Someone compile the kernel for me because he said my laptop network card is not recognized in the 2.6.18 released. I am not sure how he did it. I am a bit worried because if I reinstall again, I will face the same problem that my network card is not recognized!.

I just finished installing a fresh install of openSuse on my old Compaq Presario V2600 laptop. The problem is, for some reason, it always boots to the terminal instead of starting x and the gnome desktop environment. I have to manually start x every time with the command startx. Then, after x has been started, the display is an unusually low resolution, and it wont let me change it. I tried running sax2 -r -m 0=vesa but this did not help fix the problem.
The second problem I am having is that my integrated wireless on the laptop does not work. It is a Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN. Please help with this as well (I know I will probably have to use proprietary drivers just like I did in Ubuntu, but I can't find how to install these drivers under openSuse.) If you need to know more about the specs of my laptop, here you go:
Make/Model: Compaq/Presario V2600
Processor: AMD Mobile Sempron 3100+
Graphics: ATI Radeon Express 200M
RAM: 512 MB
Operating System(s): Dual Boot between XP Pro and openSuse
HDD: 40GB SATA

I've got an old laptop wich wireless adapter is a Gigabyte GN-WI01 GS MINI PCI(its chipset is Realtek RTL8169/8110, I believe) and I'm not able to make it run in Wifislax 3.1 Live CD. I downloaded the linux drivers for it and tried to install them following the instructions but when it came the time to execute configure.sh it told me that I had to actualize some kind of packets first(GK+ or something like that can't remember ). I also have another wireless usb adapter that I tried to use too. It's a Linksys WUSB54g v4(chipset: rt2570). I tried to follow a guide I found about making run an adapter like that on Wifislax 3.1 but when I had to "Force ralink rt73 on rt2500" it doesn't appear on my Live CD version, it appears "Force ralink rt73 on rt2570", dunno if it has something to be but I get an error while making it.
I don't know if it has to be with my laptop, my wireless adapters or my way of following the steps. If it has to be with my adapters I would like to buy some new one(not very expensive) that I won't have any problems running it on Wifislax and that will work on my old laptop(cause I just have that one and can't afford a new one).

I was relieved to read online that I'm not the only first-time Ubuntu user to destroy their system beyond repair and wish to uninstall and reinstall Ubuntu. However, all the tutorials I can find on how to do it are for users who have a dual operating system on their computer, especially XP and Vista. Ubuntu is my sole operating system (I decided to give it a try when my computer crashed and needed to be rebooted with a new operating system).
Is there a way to just remove my entire Ubuntu operating system from my laptop and reinstall it? I've already downloaded Ubuntu onto my jump drive and it's all set to reinstall. Tutorials claim that restarting my laptop with the jump drive inserted in my laptop will automatically startup the Ubuntu installation process but it doesn't, and I'm sure it's because I still have Ubuntu on my laptop.
Stats:
Gateway NV52
Formerly Windows Vista, but that was removed and Ubuntu (Linux) is now the sole operating system
Gnome
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

I would like to try to reinstall a barebones xp on a compac laptop as a dual boot with 11.1. I repartitioned using gparted so I now have 20 Gb free. Here (I hope) is the output of fdisk -lu [URL] I spent a lot of time setting up opensuse and don't want to lose the settings, etc. Should I repartition with the 20G space "in front" of the linux partitions? Can I back up the linux settings so I can reinstall them if I lose everything? Is there a sort of windows emulator (wine?) that will run programs that won't run on opensuse, like netflix, tax prep software, etc? Too many questions I know but I would like a fairly simple foolproof fix if possible.

I run Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony FZ-VGN15C Laptop. On start-up of Ubuntu I get two error messages including '...Video : Failed...' (the message is too fast to be read completely) This might relate to the fact that my built in camera does not work with Skype or Cheese Webcam Booth. The webcam type is VGP-VCC4 by RICOH.

We recently were told that our windows was not legi(IT was but thats another story!) so we tried linux on our laptop.
After installation we connected to the internet fine through BT home home"wireless" then we closed down and restarted and the system will not accept the wireless key and ask's for a password to unlock the "keychain" (works ok using the ethernet cable)
We were thinking of putting Ubuntu on the Desktop but now unsure what to do.

I have an old old laptop and wanted to try Linux on it. I know next to nothing about Linux and slightly more than nothing about Unix. I made a pen drive with Ubuntu on it but the laptop won't boot from a USB device. So I downloaded several distros. I tried to boot a Ubuntu CD but it won't go past the splash screen. I tried DSL and it won't boot that either. So it's still running Windows 98SE at this point.
I tried several of the distro's under QEMU on my desktop and they seem to work... so the distro's are OK I think. Then I tried burning Knoppix on a DVD and booting the PC. I get the splash screen and it get to the point of saying something like "running dbus" and just hangs forever. I waited 40 minutes and still nothing. Tried booting the PC instead with a distro called "PCLinux Phoenix XFCE" that I burned onto CD. Once again splash screen and then nothing. Finally got a message saying it can't configure video and do I want to do it by hand. Really? Like I can do that. So I booted Win XP again and somehow THAT manages to run both monitors.

I have recently installed Ubuntu lucid lynx and at my old house I had a regular cable modem (no wifi) and never used wireless internet. I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I define newbie (as far as Linux distros) and I have tried everything including going to work w/no sleep because I'm going through massive trial & errors

I bought a new CDROM drive, as recommended by HP. It still doesn't work. I can open and close it now; so that's changed. But it still doesn't appear as a drive, and I can't use it.
Here's as best as I can describe it:
When starting up, the boot order doesn't recognize the cdrom drive, but I can open and close the drive during this time.
In Windows 7, I can't open the cdrom drive, and it doesn't recognize it in device manager, disk management, or my computer.
In Ubuntu Linux, I can open the cdrom drive, but it still doesn't recognize the cds, and it won't mount.
If I reformat everything, would my cdrom drive work again? Can I reinstall Windows without a cdrom drive? I've deleted the upper and lower filters as was suggested in Google searches. Took the disk drive out and checked that it was installed correctly (no reason it shouldn't have been). Still: nothing works.

I gave up trying to figure out the problem and just reinstalled 10.10. Anyways, did the reinstall, installed all proprietary drivers and STILL NO WIRELESS. Seriously, what the heck is going on? Again, computer is HP Pavillion dv2500, using 10.10, and the wireless driver is the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver. I previously had access to the Internet, so I really don't know what could have changed.
