Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got an old laptop wich wireless adapter is a Gigabyte GN-WI01 GS MINI PCI(its chipset is Realtek RTL8169/8110, I believe) and I'm not able to make it run in Wifislax 3.1 Live CD. I downloaded the linux drivers for it and tried to install them following the instructions but when it came the time to execute configure.sh it told me that I had to actualize some kind of packets first(GK+ or something like that can't remember ). I also have another wireless usb adapter that I tried to use too. It's a Linksys WUSB54g v4(chipset: rt2570). I tried to follow a guide I found about making run an adapter like that on Wifislax 3.1 but when I had to "Force ralink rt73 on rt2500" it doesn't appear on my Live CD version, it appears "Force ralink rt73 on rt2570", dunno if it has something to be but I get an error while making it.
I don't know if it has to be with my laptop, my wireless adapters or my way of following the steps. If it has to be with my adapters I would like to buy some new one(not very expensive) that I won't have any problems running it on Wifislax and that will work on my old laptop(cause I just have that one and can't afford a new one).
I cannot get wireless to work on my friends HP Compaq 6735s Laptop with Linux Mint 9. The wireless button is lit up. I can use my Desktop USB wireless adapter alright.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI dual boot with windows xp and ubuntu 9.10. When using windows my wireless works fine but when using ubuntu my wireless does not work. The first time ubuntu was loaded the wireless was working and then while I was trying to figure out how to load a program I messed up a grub file. As I couldn't fix it I just reinstalled Ubuntu and since then my wireless is inoperable in Ubuntu only.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just finished installing a fresh install of openSuse on my old Compaq Presario V2600 laptop. The problem is, for some reason, it always boots to the terminal instead of starting x and the gnome desktop environment. I have to manually start x every time with the command startx. Then, after x has been started, the display is an unusually low resolution, and it wont let me change it. I tried running sax2 -r -m 0=vesa but this did not help fix the problem.
The second problem I am having is that my integrated wireless on the laptop does not work. It is a Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN. Please help with this as well (I know I will probably have to use proprietary drivers just like I did in Ubuntu, but I can't find how to install these drivers under openSuse.) If you need to know more about the specs of my laptop, here you go:

I got myself a shiny M305 Logitech mouse for my laptop. It comes with a littlee USB wireless dongle. When I plug in the dongle, DMESG shows me that the system notices the dongle:

I installed 8.04.3 Ubuntu into a used laptop for a friend, it was an ex business model HP I think, it installed well and wireless was no problem, if the ethernet cable was not plugged in, I could see the wireless signal indicator, it seemed to be there automatically and I could see the available networks displayed.The user has now apparently been using it a lot on ethernet cable for a month or two and wants to begin occasionally to use wireless. She says her daughter gets wireless ok in the house on visits, so I guess that the wifi is always on and available from the (BT, UK) home hub device in the house.

This must be a repost, but I still want to ask, how do I activate the wireless on my laptop? I've been given advice about this a while back, but forgot. Just reinstalled a fresh copy of 9.10

searching broadcom ubuntu in google results in a thread that is five years old. has there been any changes? i still cannot set up my 4 year old laptop's wireless to run and i have just about given up. why should i spend my valuable time getting something that is suppose to work when i could just run windows 7 and be done with it. now this is coming from a 4 year old laptop, has anything changed? i want to hear yes but i know that wireless support in linux is absolutely atrocious and sickening, even more than 4 years ago since wireless is now the norm and linux refuses to give proper attention to wireless drivers.

I have been googleing for the last hour and a half trying to find the easiest way to set up a static IP for my laptop's wireless connection.The most promising link I found required me to delete the network manager but I do not want to do this as I often take my laptop with me so I need to be able to connect to new wlan easily. I just want a static IP so I can set up port forwarding.Is there a equivalent process to windows XP where you just manually assign a local address like 192.168.2.9 or something like that? I tried setting it up through the network manager but later read that it doesn't work for encrypted connections.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv5-1010) and the networking was working fine for the most part, but then not sure what happened, the screen just kinda went blank so I restarted the laptop, and now the wireless won't turn on. There's a button on the laptop to turn it on and off, but I can't seem to get that to function in Linux. I'm assuming it's just a simple matter of getting the wireless to switch back on again, unfortunately I can't figure out how to do that .
Edit: I've tried to whole booting into windows and turning the wireless on there, and before that's worked, but it doesn't seem to be working this time around.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'll be frank. I recently switched to Ubuntu 10.10 to become more familiar with linux as I set up a website, but I'm also an avid user in a private torrent tracker. Coming from windows to linux, I don't know how to properly set up a static IP address from my wirelessly connected laptop. Other walk-throughs for setting up a static IP seem to focus on desktop machines and not a wirelessly connection machine. These walk-throughs also tell me to delete Network manager, which really messes up the ability to find connections for a wireless laptop. I also have two homes I go back and forth with, so I'd simply like the ability to just emit a static IP, and for my main networks to allow me to connect, and upload/download from it easily.

I have loaded ndiswrapper and managed to get my D-Link usb dongle working (this is wireless N) but I need to disable my laptops built in rtl8187B wireless (they both connect at log on).
In Windows I just turn of the wireless switch but in Ubuntu this disables all wireless. I think I have to black list the rtl8178b driver.
I'm on an HP Pavillion dv4-1125nr with a Broadcom BCM 4312 network card.
I only have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on this computer.

It isn't even detecting the wireless card, and the network manager will only let me connect to wired networks (I'm connected to my router via ethernet cable right now).
I've pressed the LED killswitch but it does nothing (doesn't change from orange to blue nor does it have any noticeable effect on the network manager or the reports of the above 2 commands).
I am running ubuntu 10.04 on a dell xps m1530 and when ever i shut the laptop then re open it I am disconnected from my wireless connection. I would love if when I opened it it would just stay connected. Is this possible?
