I get 3-4 clicks every minute, until I realized the problem and installed "laptop-mode-tools". After that things are back to normal.Why isn't laptop-mode installed by default in Lucid? This is a simple work-around which should be imposed by default, so users' hard discs won't be damaged.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThis started yesterday.I have been running Lucid since the Beta release with no problems. Yesterday, I found about 20 or so updates ready for 10.04. I looked them over, mostly lib files, so I decided to go ahead and let them update. That evening I rebooted my machine before I left for the night, and it came up with the error "Ubuntu is running in Low Graphics Mode". In a word X is totally hosed. The display is cut just left of center, with part of the windows on the right carrying off the screen to come back onto the screen to the left.
I thought maybe Xconf might have been messed up, but not sure how. The updates I applied did not do anything to Xorg; and my understanding was that I didn't need that file because I am running with an Nvidia card. I tried to "reconfigure" the X settings from the error message, that did not work. I logged into a text only terminal, and copied a good backup of Xorg.conf back into place and rebooted. Same thing, still running in Low Graphics mode.
Firefox is set to launch automatically at startup. It regularly starts up in offline mode. Then, once wireless connection is established, I have to restart FF in order to get it to browse the net.
This has been amply discussed and fixes have been suggested. I've tried at least three modifications using FF's 'about:config', but to no avail.
The graphic card on my Asus A8Js died and now i'm left with a perfectly good laptop (everything except the graphic card works) that is too expensive to repair! I got a new one already since I really need it for working.
I'm able to boot on to the winxp which is currently installed by plugging another monitor to the VGA exit on the laptop, but only into to VGA mode and with some artifacts running through the screen (lines and dots and what not). If I let it boot in normal mode I stop getting signal on the external monitor and that's it.
I would like to know If it is possible to do a full installation of Ubuntu on this laptop and then run with normal GUI but on VGA mode to then install VNC or something of the kind. VNC would permit me to use the computer without an external monitor and thus install and manage more stuff.
I guess that a command line only install of ubuntu would also be another option, but I'm not that fluent with command line.

I have Tango Studio installed on a usb stick which i wish to install alongside my current Maverick install. I booted up into it but when i click on the "install tango studio" icon i get asked for a password. I have searched google and i have not been able to find anything about this. It doesn't appear anywhere on their website and before someone says to ask on their forums i can't as their forums are not in english. I used start up disk creator to make the usb install but couldn't boot into it at first. I did some searching and found out that creating a usb install in maverick isn't backwards compatible. There was a simple solution which got me into the live mode, pressing tab, typing in live and then enter. I wonder if this is the reason why i am being asked for the password when i get into the live desktop? I have never had to put in a password before. I have tried a few generic passwords but no joy so i don't know what to do. Is there a default password that Ubuntu uses that would work for me so i could finally get it installed?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem, so I boot in recovery mode. The Recovery Mode menu comes up, but when I press a cursor key, the purple Ubuntu screen comes up. I cannot get to the menu items that I need!
The recovery mode is supposed to provide a failsafe text-only environment.
Does anyone know what app puts up the purple screen?
I would really like to remove it. I tried to install xdm, which I prefer, but keep running into the purple screen. - With XDM installed, the purple screen comes up and blocks you from seeing anything. Fortunately, remote login by RDP still works. - If you switch console (CTRL+ALT+Fn) back and forth a few times, the purple screen appears again. You have to go to a new console (F8 or even F9 instead of F7) and begin a new Gnome session. Eventually you run out of function keys...
Perhaps I'm using the wrong distribution. Ubuntu is friendly, but you pretty much have to use it exactly as it installs. Can someone recommend a distribution that puts more emphasis on stability?
I've installed UNR 10.04 on an old UMPC. Graphics are a total mess, even console text doesn't display properly. All I get is a bunch of pixels, smeared across the screen. I'd blame KMS, but that's only supposed to affect X. Anyway, according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting/, "KMS is enabled by default for the -intel, -ati, and -nouveau drivers. It is not available for any other drivers". Mine isn't any of those, so KMS shouldn't be enabled at all. I've found that failsafeX in a recovery console works OK. My question is, how can I get UNR 10.4 to default to failsafeX in normal mode?

Similar, but the icon set and windows are a little different. Under 'appearance' the theme, which I'm told is called 'light' isn't visible. And I don't know the original icon set. I have read other posts that state to right click on file>properties>open with but do not seem to have the open with option when right clicking a dvd that is in my dvd drive. I would also like to change the open with option in the right click menu. The current option is to open with movie player, and movie player cannot seem to find additional plug ins to open file with.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Lucid a week or two ago. Sound has worked fine, then suddenly, yesterday, I have no sound for any application. The Gnome sound applet shows the volume normally, and have the Mute All option greyed out (not selectable). Nothing stands out as wrong or unusual under sound preferences, and I didn't change anything, although I did recently install a set of updates. There is no physical mute button on this laptop. IT is not account-specific, there are no sound effects even before you log in.
As well, since the upgrade I have intermittently not had the networking icon in the notification area appear, it is covered over by a fragment of some other graphic. It is most usable with the Human these, it is completely unusable with any of the new themes. Anyone know a fix for either of these two issues, especially the first?
Finding Lucid extremely flaky, particularly the signature themes. I like some aspects of it, such as the fact the wireless button on my laptop works now, but overall, not an impressive effort - someone whose first introduction to Ubuntu is Lucid and sees that the notification area doesn't even work correctly is not likely to stick around.
If I let my computer sit for about 10 minutes, I lose all the windows I had open (gnome) and i get a message saying I'm running in low graphics mode. I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAll audio and sounds work just fine until I close my laptop's lid for a spell and reopen. On resume, there is simply no sound at all. It's all fixed when I restart, but being a laptop, I like being able to close the lid and come back to it every now and then.
I believe it's an issue from when Ubuntu changed their audio in the transition between Jaunty and Karmic, and it never got fixed. FYI, it worked just fine in Jaunty.
From past postings and research, it seems to be a lack of something 'waking up' or restarting when the lid opens. However, it's not 'alsa restart' or 'pulseaudio restart' or whatever. It's one little bug that keeps me from having sound without a restart.
I had ubuntu 9.10, and every time i turned on my computer it would prompt me to upgrade, so finally i did. I let it upgrade over last night, then finished it this morning. when it went to restart, it turned off fine, but when it came back on, the screen goes through the Gateway first thing where it shows like F10 for boot from etc, and then the screen goes to a black command line looking screen, then it says ubuntu for a second, and then the screen goes black and does nothing. i let it sit for about an hour to see if it was just running slow, but it was still black when i checked it, so now my laptop is useless until i figure something out.

Right now the external monitor is working, but sometimes it goes black for 2-3 seconds and then works again. This happens sometimes 5 times in a row, sometimes once, sometimes none. Other issue, when I install any new kernel it doesn't work. I get weird picture on monitor.

After the updates were installed, I shut the laptop down. The shutdown was slow but graceful with no errors. Now, when I try and power back on, I get errors about CIFS stating that the network share I map to could not connect. Also, that the network could not connect. I usually connect wirelessly and had no problems until now. It lets me log in but freezes after I see my desktop. No cursor or keyboard response...no response to CTRL+ALT+DEL...I can only manually force shutdown....
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running usb version of lucid 10.04.2, with many apt-get installs. Shortly after running awhile, programs will not run, I get either an "input/output error" or "Bus error (core dumped)". (Examples of programs rendered inoperable are top, df, file)
I've read something about a memory leak in Lucid, but in my case, the computer doesnt slow down, things just stop working. Is this a known problem with Lucid? I'm thinking maybe one of my apt-get installs corrupted something. Is this a known problem that has a software update available?
Here is the output of "top" which fortunately currently DOES work, while other progs don't. (the memory usage stays constantly in that 1.5 GB range)

When karmic boots 2.6.31-21 and initrd.img has finished loading, and I have taken quiet splash out of boot line, I get nothing on the external display until gnome come up. Does the kernel driver only recognise internal displays until X takes over, or is there something wrong with the karmic 855GM kernel driver?
