Hardware :: Installed Slackware 13 - Laptop Switches Off

Aug 29, 2009

This morning I installed Slackware 13 i386 and started configuring it. I've got a problem as my laptop has turned off unexpectedly twice since I started using Slack 13. I don't know if it's related to Slackware 13 but it has never happened before on this laptop with Slackware 12.2 or any other system. The first guess would be overheating. I checked the laptop's BIOS but could not find anything related to cooling down.

The laptop seems quite hot but it's nothing unusual for it. I also noticed that acpi is not installed by default. Would it make much difference? The laptop is pretty new (6 months) and the cooling module seems to be clean. The only thing that differs from my previous installations is that for the first time I installed ATI's fglrx and enabled desktop effects. Could it be a buggy video driver?

Slackware :: Plug Projector On Laptop With Slackware 13.1 Installed?

Nov 3, 2010

I was trying to plug projector on my laptop with slackware 13.1 installed. The problem is that the projector stops showing whenever I start X. I can see everything starting from LILO loader, but whenever I type "startx" - bam, no signal or just a black screen on the wall. I try to switch to console mode with ctrl+alt+f1 - the view appears, switching back to X with ctrl+alt+f7 - view disappears. I am using awesome WM. I tried XFCE, but the result was the same. I also tried to change resolution to

Code:
xrandr --output default --mode 1024x768 / 800x600
, but again, no difference. My laptop is ASUS F3Jc. Fn keys doesn't help as well.

Ubuntu :: When Upgraded The Laptop To 11.04 It Wouldn't Boot Properly It Shows The Splash And Then Switches To A Console?

May 9, 2011

I got wireless printing working on my mom's computer... Then when I upgraded the laptop to 11.04 it wouldn't boot properly. It shows the Ubuntu splash and then switches to a console where I can see services starting and stopping. It freezes when it's going through this section of startup. I rebooted and started the machine in recovery mode, then selected low-graphics from the list. It works in low-graphics mode in Ubuntu Classic (my mom doesn't want Unity so I set Classic as the default)

Slackware :: How Should Proprietary ATI Driver Be Installed On Slackware Current 64-bit?

May 15, 2010

I've tried a few different ways to install the ATI graphics driver "fglrx" to get 3D acceleration. If I try to install using the standard file "ati-driver-installer-10-4-x86.x86_64.run" from the ATI web site it appears to work but then I discover it actually got an error.I saw a reference to ATI requiring 32-bit libraries to install their 64-bit driver. Is there a link or post that explains how to add the 32-bit libraries. Will that solve the problem, or will I just waste more time trying that?

Ubuntu Networking :: Get The Necessary Driver Installed (after Downloading It With Another Laptop)

Mar 22, 2011

I have just installed 10.04 on a dell inspiron laptop, but the wireless adapter will not work. I uses a broadcom BCM4312. When I click on the wireless icon, it says "firmware missing". Normally, I would connect to look for proprietary drivers, but my problem is that I live in an apartment complex with only wifi.

So my question is, A) does this sound like a driver problem, and B) if so, how can I get the necessary driver installed (after downloading it with another laptop) when I use lshw, it does show the wireless device, by says that it is disabled. I tried following the directions here [URL]... (changing "ieee80211_crypt_tkip" with "lib80211_crypt_tkip" due to the rename in 2.6.29. I think that is correct), but that did not work either.

Red Hat / Fedora :: 13 Does Not Recognize Laptop Display With Nvidia Installed

Jun 9, 2010

boots fine if an external monitor is plugged in, otherwise the laptop screen just flashes white till it dies and reboots. lsmod says nouveau is loaded, however it lets me rmmod it as though its not in use. rmmod on the nvidia mod says it is in use. nvidia settings can change the resolution of the external monitor

used yum to install and built from scratch, both have the same result. reason i want to get rid of nouveau is because it detects my laptop resolution as larger than it is and even if i lower the resolution it still stretches it further than the boundries of the screen. without the nvidia driver my laptop display is recognised correctly aside from size issues.

Enabling the nvidia driver / etc / rc.d / init.d / functions line 526 1484 Segmentation fault "$@"

SUSE :: Add OpenSUSE To Laptop Which Already Has Vista Ultimate Installed?

Feb 4, 2011

I'm currently trying to add OpenSUSE to my Laptop which already has Vista Ultimate installed, hoping I will end up with a dual boot system. Currently, my HD is divided into four partition: Vista Ultimate with Bitlocker enabled needs two partitions - one for the unencrypted boot files, and one for the rest of the system. Then I have an unencrypted partition for data that I don't want encrypted, and finally the partition in which I plan to install Linux.

I have already installed OpenSUSE to that fourth partition, and it worked just fine. But now, I'd like to reinstall with LVM, so that I can use encryption as well. Upon installation, however, I get the following error: Code: Error Failure occurred during following action: Creating volume group system fromv System error code was: -4004 I'm wondering if this is because I'm running out of (primary?) partitions? Seems like LVM, just like Vista Ultimate, needs two partitions, one for the boot files and one for the rest of the system. I've read something about a PC drive only being able to hold four partitions, so I'm wondering if I need to get rid of that extra unencrypted partition I have in order to get OpenSUSE with LVM installed. Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Fedora Installation :: Make A Virtual Machine Using Exiting Installed Windows 7 On Laptop HD?

Dec 4, 2010

I have a Lenovo T500 laptop with 4 GB RAM. I have installed Windows 7 64bits OEM on my laptop HD. I also installed Fedora 14 on my USB External Hard Drive which it has it own boot sector. I don't want to have a dual boot. So if I plug in my external HD to my laptop and turns the machine on, it automatically my Fedora comes up, other wise my windows 7. (I set up start-up boot drive , first to USB External HD and then internal HD)

I installed KVM (Virtual Machine Manger) on my Fedora 14 and I am trying to install windows 7 64bits OEM on my Fedora 14 as Virtual Machine. After setting everything and start installing windows form CD, I got BLUE SCREEN right after "WINDOWS FILES LOADING..." finished. it shows me a blue screen and then it will stop

Questions:

1- How can I fix that problem?
2- Is ther way to make a Virtual Machine on my Fedora using my exiting installed windows 7 on my laptop HD?

Slackware :: How-to Disable Hdd Spinoffs On A Laptop

I have Aspire one 752 netbook with slack 13.1 installed. I installed laptop-mode-tools from slackbuilds to control power management and etc. I'd like to make sure that sda drive in netbook never spins off when not running on batteries. For now it seems to spin down after every half a minute and is producing clicking sounds. I issued 'hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda' which seemed to work - no clicks any more, and no spinning-up sounds. What is the right way to make this change to be applied whenever netbook is on AC power?Edit: Also, how to make this 'hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda' survive hibernate, as it reverts to '96' after being resumed:
# hdparm -B /dev/sda/dev/sda: APM_level = 96Edit2: Ok, i changed hdparm -B values from 254 to 255 in laptop-mode.conf, since values of 254 and any other i tried(1, 96, 128) gave ioctl errors and were not applied to drive.

Slackware :: Kernel 2.6.33.4 Not Working On Laptop

May 31, 2010

The 2.6.33.4 kernel (using huge-smp) does not work for my laptop. It tries to boot, but after the line (Freeing init...) the screen goes blank. No logs since the filesystem is not yet mounted (I think). I've blogged about it already (posted it here, investigated myself, etc) for the previous versions of the kernel. I've been following every updates on -current and most of the thing works well except for the kernel. The kernel that works out of the box for my machine was 2.6.33. Previous kernel that works was 2.6.29.6. Then it went 2.6.33.1, 2.6.33.2 however, I need to compile using the config of 2.6.33 to make it work on .1 and .2. Now, I tried the same thing on 2.6.33.4 but some cryptic error occurred while loading the kernel.

That all were using huge-smp kernel. Now I tried to compile a generic-smp kernel (of course with initrd). (I did not install kernel modules yet). It works and it boots. However, since there are no kernel modules, it freezes after starting xfce at runlevel 3. So my guess is that somehow, my previous problems were either config related or module related. I though that if I will as well compile the kernel module, it may work, but as I look at source/k it seems that the source for kernel modules are coming the install package from slackware/a packages. Sorry, just a newbie.

Slackware :: Laptop And TV-out With Intel Chipset?

Jul 26, 2011

I've got a Laptop with Intel video chipset. I've got a full slackware 13.37 installation and I'm using the huge-smp kernel all though it's not recommended. But I don't think the issue is kernel related. The problem is that it detects that there is a monitor connected to the s-video connector, but there is no picture on the screen. It doesn't matter what mode I use, but ideally I want cloning.

What happens when I use KDE and krandertray (or system-configuration for that matter) is that I can choose resolution and everything but no picture shows up on the TV. When I press the "Identify monitor" (Or something) button both the "1 TV1" and "2 LVDS1" shows up on the same monitor (laptop). That is weird.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or could point me in some direction as to what could be done?(I haven't had the chance to test modifications to xorg.conf quite yet, but I guess that should work. However, I think it's worth it to get rid of this bug)
