Has anyone tried to install Karmic on a laptop that has HP's new Linux on a chip OS installed? I think it's a scaled down Splashtop desktop and at least a portion of the OS is hardware based. I sure wonder what would happen if/when I try to install grub and Ubuntu.

I have here a Fujitsu-Siemens laptop with Windows Vista on it. The graphical chip of this laptop is damaged in such a way that during boot I can see texts but once the GUI starts it is over. No more picture. This happens with Vista, but also when I boot a live-cd from Ubuntu.The owner of this laptop, not me, wants to buy a new one but would like all data to be saved.I have downloaded the server version of Ubuntu 10.04 (so I stay in text mode) and with the CD I can boot into restore mode. There it is possible to mount the internal hard-disk, after which I can see the data.
But... how do I get it from the disc? How do I setup the network, which I believe is running already, to make the laptop a part of my home network? Now from other computers I can't see this laptop, and I have no idea how to see my computers from this laptop.Or is it possible to burn a CD/DVD in Restore mode. If so how do I do that?
What's the right direction or give me step by step on how to do this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Lenovo T500 laptop with 4 GB RAM. I have installed Windows 7 64bits OEM on my laptop HD. I also installed Fedora 14 on my USB External Hard Drive which it has it own boot sector. I don't want to have a dual boot. So if I plug in my external HD to my laptop and turns the machine on, it automatically my Fedora comes up, other wise my windows 7. (I set up start-up boot drive , first to USB External HD and then internal HD)
I installed KVM (Virtual Machine Manger) on my Fedora 14 and I am trying to install windows 7 64bits OEM on my Fedora 14 as Virtual Machine. After setting everything and start installing windows form CD, I got BLUE SCREEN right after "WINDOWS FILES LOADING..." finished. it shows me a blue screen and then it will stop
Questions:
1- How can I fix that problem?
2- Is ther way to make a Virtual Machine on my Fedora using my exiting installed windows 7 on my laptop HD?

The hardware is all the same.If I attempt to install from Live mode - karmic freezes when it's configuring Apt and ubiquity-dm crashes when installing direct from boot.I have switched to Mint but I would like to go back go to Ubuntu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I close the lid of my notebook computer and it goes to sleep and then awake, there is no audio. I have read a few other's postings and have found that this has happens on more than just mine. I've installed the very same Karmic custom DVD onto other computers, including laptops, and sounds works after wakeup on them just fine. So I suspect there is something with my Gateway that is causing it. In the end, I have to reboot simply to get the audio to return.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAm running karmic on a P2-350 Mhz with 256 Mb RAM. Yes, I know this is an old computer, but it has been very good, performance wise, since versions earlier than 8.x I think.
But now, after a fresh install of karmic, it is very slow at everything. Checked system monitor and CPU is constantly running at between 95% and 100%
I have looked many places for good tutorial on configuration of amanda client with Karmic, but none of them are good enough. I basically got following message no matter what I change in Client side.
1. I am using 64-bit Ubuntu Karmic client with 2.5.2p1 amanda-client with xinetd.
2. The user is backup, group is backup.
3. The config file is located at /etc/amandahosts, and /var/backups/.amandahosts and /var/lib/amanda/.amand ahosts using soft link to the /etc/amandahosts file.
4. /etc/amandahosts file have following line.192.168.0.14 backup amdump.The 192.168.0.14 is server IP address.
I'm a big convert on using Ubuntu on my x86/x64 machines.I have a nice IBM Intellistation 185 Power PC (ppc) with dual 970 processors and 8gb of ram (and 3 SCSI 300 MB drives).I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it (the PPC distro) and it gets to the boot prompt, asks me how I want to install (I can choose "live" or "install", etc..). No matter which option I choose (I've tried them all) it hangs after trying to start the kernel at "returning from prom_init".
NI've also tried other distros to see where that got me - Debian does the exact same thing as Ubuntu (which makes sense). Yellow Dog Linux actually will install and run fine(I'm writing this from Firefox 3 in YDL). Since YDL works, I'd think that a version of Debian/Ubuntu should be able to work.Any ideas on how to debug this and find out why Ubuntu won't install (or even run the Live CD?)
I want to install Ubuntu to HDD via USB drive but I can't see my HDD. Only the USB drive is there. I don't have any CD left to burn the ISO, so USB drive is my only choice.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get 9.10 to work nicely on a Thinkpad Edge 14".Everything is working fine, except that I have issues with the intel graphics drivers.The monitor's native resolution is 1366x768 and I have Intel HD graphics card on it.I have changed my xorg.conf to use driver = "vesa", but now I get only a resolution of 1024x768.I tried to use xrandr to fix this, by adding a new mode etcetera, but this does not work - I believe because the driver is the issue.Also, doing Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6] gives me a blank screen rather than a console.
How do I find out the details about my graphics chip? Intel Corporation Arrandale Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 12)Maybe I should go more bleeding edge for my drivers? How do I do that?
I have 10.04 LTS installed onto an SSD and have a spinning disk for crud, and my brother wants to give me his old GA-PH67A-UD3 and 8GB of RAM if I buy an i7 2600 to put in it. The thing is, I'm happy with my GA-965P-DS3 with Q6600, so I don't actually need an upgrade. So, can I get away with replacing the mobo, chip, and RAM and putting the SSD in the equivalent SATA port on the new mobo (/dev/sda), and will it cope? Will the kernel detect a new board and chip and carry on accordingly? I'll have to remount my crud drive to the same mount point it expects, and if my user account as the same UID as the old system, I'm hoping that might cope, too. Of course, I might be suggesting complete evil, and if this was Windows, I wouldn't even dare think about it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Linux might cope with this kind of change where Windows would fall over in a heap.

I am able to see the card in Device Manager, but can't get the driver to work despite trying many of the suggestions I've read elsewhere. I installed build-essentials and downloaded the driver from ralink. I unzipped the folder, and started to follow README as well as this thread rt3062 [URL]. So, I've adjusted MODE and TARGET as instructed in Makefile. I also adjusted the following sections of red text from Makefile:

I have got a server which has a motherboard with nvidia mediashield raid built in, with Centos installed it picked up the raid 5 array that i had configured as one drive so the os install was straight forward. When i booted the netinstaller of opensuse 11.3 run though the setup, when getting to the partition setup is was picking up the three hdd as seperate drives and not one, so i got to a certain point and aborted the installation and i re run the installer, the raid status said the array was degarded or something which i knew there was nothing wrong with it as i had set it up only about 2 weeks ago and there was one drive missing aswell. So i removed the array and re configured the array and rebooted and the raid status said healthy again as it was before on centos, then i run the opensuse installer again and it went though the process again but completely stop at "Searching for linux partitions" , cursor was working fine , but nothing else was so i had to press reset.
This was my problem, i know kind of what the problem is, but what i want to know is , i thought opensuse is based on rhel same as centos but how comes centos has the drivers for the raid chip i have in my board and opensuse has not.
I bought a magazine "Ubuntu User" that comes with the 9.10 DVD (32- & 64-bit) to avoid heavy download.
1. What is the biggest benefit of the DVD versus the CD ? Having more software on the disc right ? But how can I install additional SW without downloading ?
2. I want to install a Home Server from the DVD but I don't know how to select the server edition to install ? Do I still need to download the CD image for the server edition ? I want to be able to select one or more of the automatic server installation scripts e.g. LAMP.
I'm running a triple-core AMD 32-bit CPU, with two matched hard drives in a software RAID 1 configuration. The system is single-boot, running Hardy only. I have no Windoze compatibility issues to impede me. In some recent posts, I discussed my desire to add a few non-standard applications to Hardy. Well, it hasn't been working for me. I've succeeded in breaking my standard Python 2.5 installation, and the Python 2.6 that I was trying to install is also broken. After asking questions in various Python forums and not getting answers, I'm starting to think about my alternatives.
I have backed up all my hard-drive data, and downloaded Karmic. I'm running from the Live CD. I am considering a clean install, though of course I would save a lot of time if I could just upgrade.
Before I leap, I see one possible problem: Karmic has failed to mount any of my hard drive partitions, as RAID or otherwise. Should I worry? When I upgraded from Dapper to Hardy on an older (non-RAID) machine, I recall that my hard disk mounted from the Live CD just fine.
Also, am I correct in understanding that Karmic is RAID-aware right out of the box? I'm wondering if I'll have to set it up manually again. That took me a while. By the way, I didn't set up separate partitions for boot, root and home (stupid me). Can I do that after the fact during an upgrade?
I've just installed Karmic and get an Out Of Range message on my monitor when starting.I had to use the alternate install in order to get Karmic on there in the first place.I have an Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS, and a BenQ FP767-12 TFT.

I just installed Karmic Koala on one of my hard harddrive. The other disk has Windows XP. Previously I had a working dual-boot setup, but after problems with Ubuntu I reinstalled it. On booting, I get the following:

There is no Grub menu which might allow me to drop to a Grub prompt and evaluate. This occurs whether I boot with the Ubuntu harddrive or re-set the BIOS to boot with the Windows harddrive. If I boot with a LiveCD, I see that both my Ubuntu and Windows harddrives exist and are readable; the Ubuntu was indeed wiped clean and reinstalled; the issue is with the boot process. How can I set this up to boot?

My wife insists that it's a virus, but it's ridiculously hard to get a virus on Linux and she doesn't have anything relevant on the matter other than 'people are switching to it on Facebook, so hackers are attacking it now.'.

Laptop only has external display. When karmic boots 2.6.31-21 and initrd.img has finished loading, and I have taken quiet splash out of boot line, I get nothing on the external display until gnome come up. Does the kernel driver only recognise internal displays until X takes over, or is there something wrong with the karmic 855GM kernel driver?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have Karmic installed with Wubi inside a Vista NTFS filesystem. Yesterday i did an apt-get dist-upgrade and Karmic never booted again. It won't even show the grub kernel list, it just shows some really quick text that vanishes before i can even figure out what it is and then drops to some sort of grub shell and then i can't figure out what to do.
I could boot a livecd and mount my karmic install and everything seems fine, the filesystem is clean and all that. But how do i fix it so it can boot again?
Does anyone here know wtf happened? Was there a bad upgrade or something?
I've never tried installing any other operating system on my desktop so I'm not sure if it's a 9.10 bug (probably not), but whenever I choose any of the options after the ubuntu cd has been loaded at startup it goes to a black screen with the underscore at the top, and promptly reboots. At this point in time I can just boot back into windows or get to the same selection screen off of the cd.I've tried burning 3 seperate cd's and at the moment and trying to boot them on my laptop (but not working... hrm). I'm thinking about redownloading the iso in a couple minutes.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu9.10 on a USB hard drive attached to my laptop. Laptop has pre-installed XP in the in-built hard-drive. Point to be noted is that my hard-drive is protected via encryption software called Pointsec.
The installation of Ubuntu on the USB hard drive went through fine and I'm able to boot Ubuntu from it.
But now the problem is, GRUB2 fails to detect the Windows XP installation.
Can someone tell me how I can force GRUB2 to boot Windows XP from hd0,0?
The GRUB1 way of configuring /etc/grub/menu.lst does NOT seem to work with GRUB2.
