I am using ubuntu 10.10 i need to install windows 7 software in ubuntu 10.10 via wine. but wine supports only windows XP or how to upgrade the wine supports with the windows 7 softwares.
I've managed to convince a few of my Backgammon playing buddies to try Linux as an OS and they're impressed with it. However there doesn't seem to be a Backgammon software available which performs well on Linux. We've tried running Windows Backgammon softwares on Wine but these don't perform well if at all. Will there be a Backgammon application available for Linux soon or is it available in Software Manager under another name? In the meantime does anyone know of one which will work well on Wine for now?
I'm trying to set-up a dual-boot (Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04), but whenever I start the installation from a Live CD and get to the partition section it is showing that my hard-drive is has no operating system, when it in fact does. Has anyone else encountered this issue, when trying to set-up dual-booting on their system? And, if you have had this issue, what did you do to resolve it? I find it very strange, since I've never had a problem like this with any of the older releases.
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty.I want to install Ubuntu 9.10 from the cd but I dont want softwares that I installed to be lost.what should I do?(It's the matter of time, internet speed and internet traffic limits)
i want to know that can we do partition in ubuntu 10.10 just like windows? The problem is, if we want to upgrade Ubuntu 10.10 to new version and we have installed lots of useful software than how can bring back the same softwares? Is there any kind of BACKUP AND RESTORE technique so that we can restore it once we have upgraded our Ubuntu.

I am a new user of FEDORA, would like to know how I can install software such as Canon Camera Software, Microsoft Encarta etc provided on CDs and DVDs into Fedora.
I got tired of dual booting on my old computer so on the new computer I am planning to run XP on VMware Player. The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.
I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
I tried to use Rythmbox to listen to some radio erlier today when I found out that only ogg streams are working for me. I know the links are working and the mms streams aren't down cuz I use the same radio stations in windows. So, what codecs or whatever do I need to solve this problem? Or doesnt linux support multimedia streams?
At this point, the only programs I still use my Windows partition for are the various automated media managing apps like Ember media manager, Tvrename and Therenamer.
For those not familiar with the above programs, what they do is take your ripped/recorded TV and movie files, rename them according to an xbmc-friendly naming protocol, organize them in terms of directory structure, and even download screen shots and metadata for them.
Are there any good alternatives for Ubuntu? If not, would running those windows programs on a virtual machine or with Wine work? Which would be easiest/most stable?
anyone know that the ntfs's file sytem struct? is there's a API or something other could let me get this number? Or there is actually no such number in windows like the number of inode in linux?
Recently I've been finding two strange-looking files on my Windows shared folders! Their names are 'khy' and 'qffhtx.exe', they appear as hidden, and they're hard to delete!! especially the first one because it has no extension. I use Ubuntu 10.10, but I am worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP. Today I tried to open the .exe file in nautilus to see what is inside and I received the message "Unable to open archive", 'khy' is apparently an empty text file. Then I unmounted my /home partition so my files are out of the way, and I ran the .exe file using WINE,
Now I have a strange-looking applet on my top panel!! and it says "Script paused", also it says "Exit', and also Wine command prompt says something strange about "LockWindowUpdate", don't imagine it I'll post the screenshots so you can see it for yourselves. Also --and this is weird-- the virus apparently is trying to call a Windows process named csrcs.exe!! Again, I'll post the screenshots.
If this is a virus, then it's like a fish out of the water on my Ubuntu, it's probably trying to do something but it can't find its way around, it's kinda funny, but Im worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP, I'm having a hard time trying to remember the name KHY, it's a very weird acronym, it's the acronym of a disease, according to what I googled, i'm sure it's a virus!!! Anyway it's HARD to remember!!!
what can I do about this? How can I see the "script"? can Ubuntu kick its ***?how can I clean my Windows?
I'm using ubuntu 9.04; I have a large project in windows that I want to "port" it in linux. It uses IPC mechanism "Shared memory" and also "Critical Section" APIs in windows, but unfortunately I have no good reference to change these windows APIs to their equivalent in linux?
Is there a comprehensive documentation or reference for this issues? I mean a table containing the equivalent APIs or systemcalls in windows and linux! For example, what's an alternative for the "InitializeCriticalSection" API in linux? Or an alternative for "CRITICAL_SECTION" structure? Or even an alternative for "RegOpenKeyEx", although we don't have registry in linux!!
I am new to linux, I am using Redhat Linux running through Virtual PC software running under Windows XP. Can please tell me how to find out the block device code for C ,D drive, as I need to add them into fstab file to mount . let me know the command to access the Windows Shared folders.
I have installed NetBeans on Windows7 with c++ enabled but I can not write c++ code because it doesn't have c++ libraries. I have installed netBeans on my Fedora and in there it works fine because there is c++ libraries built with it. My questions are, Where is c++ libraries on Fedora (The destination)? Can c++ libraries in linux be copied to Windows? Will it work? If yes how? If not where can I download c++ libraries to windows7?

I did a fresh install of Lucid alongside Vista on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804. When I went into "Personal File Sharing" under System > Preferences, it said that the necessary packages were not installed. Using the documentation at this link: [URL] I went into a terminal, opened shares-admin, and as promised it told me that I didn't have the right software installed, and allowed me to check both NFS and SMB to install. I did so, installed, and at the end, it said everything was successful.
After exiting the dialog, the window asking me to install NFS/SMB appeared again. I selected to install, it disappeared, and then reappeared. It did this repeatedly, until I decided to close it out. I then went back to the guide, and went to add a new share. But the drop down box would not allow me to choose Windows share, only Unix (NFS). How do I enable Windows File sharing? I have used Ubuntu in the past and have got it to share with Windows computers flawlessly. Now, it appears that this essential (for me) functionality is broken.
I recently installed Avant Window Navigator and worked fine. My problem is that I don't have on any preferences tab the option to Alert me when Window receive updates. It seems the new version does not have it as previous versions.I was wondering how can I enable the Alerts when Updates are received in windows.PS. I checked all tabs and seems this option is missed.I forgot to mention that I am also new at GNU/Linux.
Here is my problem: I had a 500GB HDD, with the fallowing partitions: C - 100GB - NTFS - Windows 7 D - 300GB - NTFS - (for staffs) H - 100GB - NTFS - unused
Yesterday I installed Ubuntu on tha last one (H), wishing to keep also the others two partitions. Now I can not access the first two, I don't see them any more. In my Disk Usage appears only the linux partition and one "Unallocated Space" of 400GB
Do you think that i have a chance to recover my data from the two partitions that I can't see them? code...
