Jun 18, 2011I want to search a bunch of files in Ubuntu to find the ones that have file names which Windows won't allow. There is too many to do it manually.

Software :: Bash - Rename Filenames With Corresponding Filenames?
Dec 1, 2009I got a filename called like this:
beach---------20090808-110000.ogg
beach---------20090808-120000.ogg
It's like this:
name----------YYYYMMDD-hhmmss.ogg
Now Im splitting these hourly files into 1 minute files. I get then this output sofar properly:
beach---------20090808-110000_00.mp3
beach---------20090808-110000_01.mp3
beach---------20090808-110000_02.mp3
and so on....
the 00, 01, 02 and up are the minutes it has splitted it. Now I need a script, after it did this, to rename the file names into this:
beach---------20090808-110000.mp3
beach---------20090808-110100.mp3
beach---------20090808-110200.mp3
beach---------20090808-110300.mp3

Feb 4, 2010i reboot, windows drives are mounted with different filenames (eg:first time d: was /media/disk and e: was /media/disk-1 but after reboot they got interchanged - e: was mounted in /media/disk). I cannot afford this as several apps use files from these drives and their path keeps changing after every fresh boot.

I want to use this checksums.md5 to verify the files that I've copied to my machine: but I'm on a Linux, so I need to convert the names inside checksums.md5 from Windows to Linux to use the md5sum utility from the shell. The first line in my example would become: f12f75c1f2d1a658dc32ca6ef9ef3ffc My Windows & Files (2010)/[bak]/testing.wmv Is there some application for this (converting a file listing, from windows cmd notation, to linux shell notation) or will I need to create a bash script using sed that just "replaces" what is "wrong" with the filenames

Dec 6, 2010I tried to tag late onto a question similar to mine on stackoverflow (Find Non-UTF8 Filenames on Linux File System) to elicit further replies, with no luck so far, so here goes again... I have the same problem as the OP in the link above and convmv is a great tool to fix one's own filesystem. My question is therefore academic, but I find it unsatisfactory (in fact I can't believe) that 'find' is not able to find non standard ascii characters.
Is there anyone out there that would know what combination of options to use to find filenames that contain non standard characters on what seems to be a unicode FS, in my case the characters seem to be 8bits extended ascii rather than unicode, the files come from a Windows machine (iso-8859-1) and I regularly need to fetch them. I'd love to see how find and/or grep can do the same as convmv.

Ubuntu :: Finding Windows Partition - Use FAT32 Partition For Photo Images And Old Windows Files
May 31, 2011I got tired of dual booting on my old computer so on the new computer I am planning to run XP on VMware Player. The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.
Partition table entries are not in disk order.
Ubuntu Installation :: Windows XP Not Finding NTFS Hdd
Jan 27, 2010I have reformatted my 320 GB and creating a separate NTFS partition for Windows XP.
When I boot with the CD and proceed to the setup window, Windows does not recognise any HDD on my laptop, hence cannot install it.
I have attached two screen shoots of my partitions. Can anyone tell why XP is not finding the NTFS partition?

Jul 11, 2011I've been trying to install the latest updates on my Ubuntu 10.10 system but keep getting the same error in Update Manager and the terminal:

dpkg: file triggers record mentions illegal package name I've tried running sudo dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get upgrade -f after running sudo apt-get update but to no avail.
After searching the forum and google I haven't been able to find this issue or a solution to a similar issue that works for my problem.
Ubuntu Installation :: Live CD Is Not Finding Windows Partition?
Jun 16, 2010I'm trying to set-up a dual-boot (Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04), but whenever I start the installation from a Live CD and get to the partition section it is showing that my hard-drive is has no operating system, when it in fact does. Has anyone else encountered this issue, when trying to set-up dual-booting on their system? And, if you have had this issue, what did you do to resolve it? I find it very strange, since I've never had a problem like this with any of the older releases.

Apr 30, 2010At this point, the only programs I still use my Windows partition for are the various automated media managing apps like Ember media manager, Tvrename and Therenamer.
For those not familiar with the above programs, what they do is take your ripped/recorded TV and movie files, rename them according to an xbmc-friendly naming protocol, organize them in terms of directory structure, and even download screen shots and metadata for them.
Are there any good alternatives for Ubuntu? If not, would running those windows programs on a virtual machine or with Wine work? Which would be easiest/most stable?

Dec 22, 2010I use Ubuntu 10.10 and setup Proftpd apps which I would like to use to access to my files from outside of my SOHO LAN network. This is work on LAN very well but from outside I get some error msg. However I establish connection with my Ubuntu FTP Server machine but I can't get list of files and folders on server.
I get this error msg:

Some Additional Information:
On the edge of SOHO LAN i use Cisco router for access to the Internet.
NAT is configured, PAT (NAT overload) is configured also.
I forward ports which I needed for FTP: 21 and 20, and passive ports 60000 - 60001.
When I use Windows OS and BUlletProof FTP server (port 21 or some custom port i.e. 65021) I only forward that port (21 or custom port i.e. 65021) and everything works great.

Oct 12, 2009I just upgraded Fedora 10 to Fedora 11. When I rebooted I just had a flashing cursor. So I typed Ctrl-Alt-F2 to open a console window on booting. That worked fine. I was going to edit xorg.conf because I suspected the problem was related to haveing installed the latest Linux NVIDIA drivers (and custom kernal) in Fedora 10 before upgrading to Fedora 11. But, I decided to edit the run level in /etc/inittab first. Unfortunately, I fat fingered run level 3 to runlevel 333. No when booting I get hung up with the error "telinit: illegal run level 333". When I try to use Ctrl-Alt-F2 to open a console window on booting now it doesn't work. How to get into a console window with this error?

I also would like to preserve the user-names used for email authentication, because there are lot of mail user clients already using those logins. What is the point in that the dot is illegal in user names? I guess that there is a good reason to this but I would like to know what it is.

Mar 30, 2011Recently I've been finding two strange-looking files on my Windows shared folders! Their names are 'khy' and 'qffhtx.exe', they appear as hidden, and they're hard to delete!! especially the first one because it has no extension. I use Ubuntu 10.10, but I am worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP. Today I tried to open the .exe file in nautilus to see what is inside and I received the message "Unable to open archive", 'khy' is apparently an empty text file. Then I unmounted my /home partition so my files are out of the way, and I ran the .exe file using WINE,
Now I have a strange-looking applet on my top panel!! and it says "Script paused", also it says "Exit', and also Wine command prompt says something strange about "LockWindowUpdate", don't imagine it I'll post the screenshots so you can see it for yourselves. Also --and this is weird-- the virus apparently is trying to call a Windows process named csrcs.exe!! Again, I'll post the screenshots.
If this is a virus, then it's like a fish out of the water on my Ubuntu, it's probably trying to do something but it can't find its way around, it's kinda funny, but Im worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP, I'm having a hard time trying to remember the name KHY, it's a very weird acronym, it's the acronym of a disease, according to what I googled, i'm sure it's a virus!!! Anyway it's HARD to remember!!!

It uses IPC mechanism "Shared memory" and also "Critical Section" APIs in windows, but unfortunately I have no good reference to change these windows APIs to their equivalent in linux?
Is there a comprehensive documentation or reference for this issues? I mean a table containing the equivalent APIs or systemcalls in windows and linux! For example, what's an alternative for the "InitializeCriticalSection" API in linux? Or an alternative for "CRITICAL_SECTION" structure? Or even an alternative for "RegOpenKeyEx", although we don't have registry in linux!!

Jan 12, 2010Tomorrow I decided to dedicate 100% of my disk to opensuse! So I backed up the files from the remaining windows partition, deleted them and expanded the /home partition. Now suddenly I cannot access it from inside, but I can still access it like normal from outside my network.I am getting 500 illegal port command when using activeAnd when I use passive, I get fail to retrieve directory.The server is on a DMZ, so ports should not be a problem, and according to our admin nothing has changed within our firewall
