Oct 10, 2010I have a 2 TB disk in an external SATA dock, formatted with a single ext3 (Linux) partition, which doesn't show up in the Windows 7 Computer Management->Disk Management utility, even as a raw/blank disk. I've verified that there's nothing wrong with the disk by connecting it to my Linux machine and mounting it, and I've verified that the dock is functioning properly by connecting a different FAT32-formatted disk, which mounts flawlessly as expected.I realize that I can't actually read the ext3 partition without additional software (e.g., Ext3IFS), but why doesn't the disk show up at all? Is there some sort of stupid anti-Linux filter built in? Is there any way to force Windows to recognize the disk, so that I can at the very least use direct block access with it?
Background: I want to clone an identical 2 TB disk onto this one. Due to my hardware layout, it's much easier to have the source disk attached to one machine and the destination disk connected to another, and do the clone over the network (the network is not a bottleneck with switched gigabit ethernet), than it is to hook them both up to one machine.(1) I did this once before when both machines were running Linux, but I've since upgraded the destination machine and decided to switch back to Windows for regular desktop use. I've got Cygwin installed, and have verified that the same basic method (dd + nc) will work, but I can't do anything if Windows doesn't even consider the destination disk to exist.I only have one eSATA port on each machine. Opening them up just to do this clone is a rather large annoyance. Also, since this is my backup disk, I'd like to eventually automate the cloning from the active disk to another one that I regularly swap with a third disk that I store off-site.

Apr 13, 2011when i click my mouse on something, it sometimes registers as two clicks. it doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough to be annoying. for example, when i click a videos video to pause it, it often opens into fullscreen (which you normally click twice to do). also, in the url bar of chromium, i can't select the entire url by clicking. i now need to use ctrl+a. that's also because when i try to select the url, the highlight randomly disappears.
if i have multiple windows open, my click on the first "x" of the top-most window also closes the next window. i'm on linux mint 10. it's not really important, but it drives me crazy sometimes when my mouse doesn't work the way i want it to.

May 21, 2011I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 on dual boot mode with Windows 7, I had to migrate from windows 7 to XP & again to windows 7. Each time after installation I updated grub. Last time while updating Grub PC went Down due to power failure. I update grub after the supply was resumed and it was successful.
On login I am facing a weird problem, My windows Drive are not appearing in Ubuntu. To access the drives I have to Plug a Pen Drive and access them first from an Application otherwise the don't even appear in Places drop-down list. If I don't plug Pen Drive they don't appear in Applications.
The other problem is that Disk utility shows space unallocated, allocated & Free above the physical capacity of Hard disk. My Hard disk is of 160 GB, Disk utility Shows Unallocated Space 18446744 TB. The Default Partitions made by me are 26GB, 14GB & others of 40 GB each.
Ubuntu :: Hibernation On Windows 7 Dual Boot - Under Disk Utility Partition Is Not Marked As Bootable
Sep 29, 2010I have been having problems hibernating my windows 7 partition recently. It happened approximately right after I set up the dual boot.
I have found other topics where it says to make sure that the windows 7 partition is marked as the active partition. I have since done so and it has not changed anything. I did it with Partition Magic on Windows. I did find it suspicious though that my Dell Recovery partition is labeled as boot while the Windows one is marked as Active and System.
However when I looked at it using disk utility in Ubuntu the windows 7 partition is marked as Bootable while the recovery partition is not.
Hibernation works on Ubuntu with a couple error messages while shutting down and some weird screen issues while booting up. But it ends up working decently.
Under Disk Utility the Ubuntu Partition is not marked as Bootable. Should it be?

Nov 18, 2010I don't understand disk sizes in Linux. I have a 500GB drive. It's ext4. I have run "tune2fs -m 0" on it to reserve the amount of space reserved for root to 0.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 that comes with a Disk Utility. When I run "System->Administration->Disk Utility (palimpsest)" the disk shows up as 500GB (see picture). But when I run df -h it shows up as 459GB. So, I don't understand the discrepancy.
When I run df I get the following:

Dec 26, 2009I'm running ubuntu 9.04 64-bit server and am looking to backup my entire OS drive. I've got a 200GB main drive, and a 1TB storage drive mounted at /storage. I'm already good as far as setting up backups of my data - but redoing all of my settings and software would be a nightmare in the event of a HD failure.
So what I'm looking for is a command line utility to do an image of the main 200gb drive to an external usb drive. The software needs to function similar to the Windows Vista/7 System Image utility or DriveImage XML and be able to make the images without shutting down. Aug 10, 2010I need to transfer a 4Gbyte file from my Linux netbook to a friends WinXP desktop. And I'd like to it with a usb flash drive, but it can't handle a file larger than 2Gbyte. A limitation due to the underlying FAT32 filesystem. But I don't wish to reformat my usb as ext3 either.
So I need to split my 4GByte file into smaller chunks. And the 'split' utility needs to be available on both Linux and the WinXP operating systems.

Jan 19, 2009Looking for a Open Source music composition editor similar to Sibelius. I found and settled on Rosegarden. Sound card is Creative Audigy 2 Platinum EX. I also have a midi keyboard which I would like to use with rosegarden. After downloading rosegarden, I found out in order to use the MIDI sequencer, I have to compile and install a real time kernel.
I finally got my kernel configured and installed, recompiled all the video/Ethernet drivers etc (after about a dozen tries ) Now on to the issue... As root, I can run the JACK audio server with realtime priority (as it is needed by Rosegarden) with the command
jackd -R -dalsa &
it starts up and seems to run. Then as a regular user, I try to connect to the JACK audio server using the qjackctl application. Qjackctl loads, but cannot seem to connect to the jack server, giving me the message "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO SERVER AS CLIENT"
HOWEVER, using the same procedure above as root, I can connect to the jack audio server with qjackctl. Rosegarden will start as a regular user but will also not connect to the JACK audio server (therefore: no sound or midi sequencer) Ive tried running Rosegarden as root (I didnt like having to do that), but get a similar error.
Through some googling, I�ve found that JACK clients (qjackctl, rosegarden etc.) must be executed by the same user who launched the JACK server. -- no problem...Except I cannot run a realtime application as a regular user. I read online that regular users can start realtime applications using the LSM module (whatever that is, I couldn�t find all that much).
how do I start the jack audio server in realtime mode as a regular user? if that is not possible...Is there a way to configure JACK so that it is started by root, but allows clients launched by regular users to connect?

Jul 16, 2010Sometimes I need to copy a huge directory to another directory (local filesystem), and usually I will use the "cp" or "rsync" commands. These commands are good, but depending on the size of the data being copied, the copy is painfully slow. I realize we are limited because of the hardware we have with it's limitations, ie, I/O speed, and the filesystem (which is usually ext3). Are there any other utilities that maybe not well known, but can handle copying large amounts of data? (mostly in the TB range)

If I remove other buttons from the menu the space is immediately replaced by more Log Out Buttons.When I hover on the icon I get the message 'Log out of this session to log in as a different user' and when I right-cllick to click on 'Remove from Panel' or 'Move' nothing happens.It is not possible to right-click on another part of the menu bar to change the Menu Properties.
