View 6 Replies View RelatedI've managed to convince a few of my Backgammon playing buddies to try Linux as an OS and they're impressed with it. However there doesn't seem to be a Backgammon software available which performs well on Linux. We've tried running Windows Backgammon softwares on Wine but these don't perform well if at all. Will there be a Backgammon application available for Linux soon or is it available in Software Manager under another name? In the meantime does anyone know of one which will work well on Wine for now?

Since I all ready have windows installed with all the required files, directory, and registry is their any way ubuntu could pick those up for running windows programs. Instead of emulating them in wine. In theory I could install my programs under windows and run them under ubuntu if ubuntu recognized my windows partition as c drive instead of OS.

I am a newbie to linux, my OS of choice is windows xp, my computers will not run windows 7 so as an alternative I am seriously thinking of changing to ubuntu after the windows support for xp finishes. with this in mind I have installed ubuntu 10.10 as a second OS on my pc. I like the speed, looks and ease of use of the OS. the only draw back is that I have a lot of windows applications that I run and sometimes beta test for a large british software company, I saw that a windows emulator was available (wine), downloaded, checked the documentation and the database, only to find the only software on the database was games. I have tried several applications (not games) only to get the error message "the file is not marked as executable". is there something I am missing or are they not supported by wine? and could all applications be supported in a future release?

The program came up just fine and I could make moves on the chessboard, but no information was saved. I got a blank screen under games in progress. Anyone use this program or have any ideas what to do next? ECTool is listed as a program that works with Wine.

I have a 802.11a-WLAN running. Due to regulatory restrictions, I am to do some dynamic frequency selection(DFS) on certain channels available in the 802.11a-band. This is called 802.11h. I am seraching for a solution reagarding 802.11h-functionality. I do know, there is a branch within madwifi called madwifi-dfs which was developed mainly by Bennoit Papillaut and Pavel Roskin.
The problem with this driver is, that it doesn't work reliable. If I simply start a network scan on my Lenovo-machine, the DFS-driver running on the embedded board recognizes a radar signal and switches the channel dirctly. So my question is - is there any driver available supporting 802.11h? I do not care about the chipset manufacturer or anything else. All I need is a working DFS-capable driver.
Currently I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on my computer, and it is the only OS installed. I purchased the $30 student WIn7 Professional upgrade. I have a XP Pro CD + Key, and I plan on using that just to upgrade to Win7. I love Ubuntu and it is my primary OS, it is just that every now and then you come across some program that requires windows (Propellerhead Reason 4, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Atomix Virtual DJ etc.) and it requires full system resorces so you do not want to use wine. I love Linux, but somtimes I just have to use WIndows, so I do not want to hear any arguments about that.
I want to do a clean install of everything, and I have data + programs backed up, I would like to install Ubuntu 9.10, WinXP Pro and I want to Upgrade XP Pro to 7. I am completely new to GRUB 2, and upgrading windows; but I have experience with Linux and Windows, and dual booting. I would like to install Ubuntu 9.10 on its own partition (No WUBI), and WInXP + Win 7 on there own partitions (3 Partitions Overall). I would like to know what to do at this point, Should I install Ubuntu then Xp then 7, Xp then 7 then Ubuntu, etc. I know how to make Partitions, I just need to know the order in which I should install the operating systems, and how to get it to dual boot.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to run Windows Firefox plugins/addons under Wine while the browser itself is the native Linux Firefox? For example; I am considering taking the introduction to Linux Open University course, but the course requirements state the need to use Shockwave Player. Obviously Shockwave Player is not available for Linux but it is (allegedly) possible to run both the Windows version of Firefox and Shockwave Player under Wine. I would prefer to run the Linux version of Firefox natively with only the Windows version of Shockwave Player using Wine.
Is there some method to achieve this ? Maybe there is some kind of wrapper application, something like the one used for Windows wireless networking drivers (NDISWrapper) or maybe there are instructions on how to embed the Shockwave Player using Wine in Firefox somewhere. Obviously my needs are quite specific but I am sure that being able to use Windows browser plugins/addons under the Linux version of Firefox would be of interest to at least a few other people.
