I am new to linux, I am using Redhat Linux running through Virtual PC software running under Windows XP. Can please tell me how to find out the block device code for C ,D drive, as I need to add them into fstab file to mount . let me know the command to access the Windows Shared folders.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThe software: Ubuntu Server Edition 9.10.The wetware: A programmer doing his best (read: ignorant, shitty) as an ad-h.When I plug the USB thumb drive in, the install OS gives it a drive letter -- /dev/sdb -- and it pushes the original /dev/sdb down to /dev/sdc. The installation works without a hitch, and GRUB2 installs, dutifully pointing the root at /dev/sdc1 instead of /dev/sdb1.I let GRUB2 start normally ("drive not found"), holding the <shift> key to get to the "rescue>" prompt.From there, I issue "ls" to discover that GRUB can NOT see /dev/sdb, and I can tell that because what is showing up as (hd1) does NOT have three partitions as it should.GRUB2 sees a total of 16 drives, not 26, and one of the drives it sees is "fd0" (there is no floppy drive).Issuing commands like "set prefix=(hdx,y)" and "root=(hdx,y)" have no effect as, I think it's just pointing to the (reiserfs)content drives and this GRUB2 tells me "unknown filesystem".I did try them all in vain, hoping that maybe I'd find a kernel somewhere.I used the "rescue" mode of the Ubuntu installer (the USB thumb drive) to get to a root prompt.From there, I mounted /dev/sdc2 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb2) onto /mnt, I mounted /dev/sdc1 (the "shifted" /dev/sdb1) onto /mnt/boot,and then I chroot'ed to /mnt.I edited /boot/grub/grub.cfg, editing every instance of "root=(hd2,1)" to the appropriate UUID for the "real" /dev/sdb1. Then I issued update-grub2.It refused to work giving me an banal "no such partition" error or something like that.
We originally had this server functioning by putting / and /boot on the SS SanDisk, which caused no problems during installation because /dev/sda doesn't get shifted.We then figured it was a good idea to put our OS files on something with failover capability. And that started us down this crappy "shifting drive letter" path.Can I control which drive letter the USB thumb drive gets assigned during the install process?If I could make it be /dev/sdc then I wouldn't be facing this problem.An alternate solution would be to know the cryptic GRUB2 commands that I can issue from the command prompt post-install, pre-reboot.But I'm wondering if that will ultimately work at all considering that GRUB2 couldn't see /dev/sdb at all.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI can not find my hard drive letters in ubuntu. In the "computer" window it just shows it as "file system". I want to run chkdsk on another hdd that I connected to the computer. It shows up as 2 icons, one called "256 GB Solid-State Disc:256GB Filesystem and the other called "256 GB Solid-State Disc:System Reserved. This disc was installed in another computer as the only hdd and I had problems with the computer so I removed it and installed disc drive. I want to check this ssd here in ubuntu to see if there are any bad sectors etc. All the instructions I can find say to Type "Run chkdsk /[drive letter]" (without quotes) in the terminal win. I entered "sudo lshw" and the drive shows as "*-disc:1" I tried using 1, disc-1 and *-disc:1 as drive letters , example, "Run chkdsk/1" (without quotes), and I get command not found for all 3. There must be a drive letter to these discs as in windows I would guess, it appears that way as I search the net. NOTES, this computer has ubuntu 10.04 installed only and has 3gb native sata mobo, no microsoft at all. I want to check the quality of this ssd as much as possible and can overwrite or delete any and all files on it, reformat it etc. If it checks out good, I may remove the existing hdd on the computer and install this one as the only hdd and install ubuntu and use it a while to make sure it works fine, then remove it and install it to the original computer where i wanted it in the first place. That computer has win7 ultimate on it, but what matters is that one has the 6gig native sata mobo and that is where this ssd will work at its fastest

I'm trying to find a software which could map sftp/scp services to a windows drive letter. I know there are quite a bunch of those available, but i haven't found a single one which could run with SYSTEM or Netservice privileges or have decent command line options so i could elevate the program myself. The mapped drive should be available for other services running on the same server.
Most of the programs (sftp netdrive, expandrive, etc) have only option to startautomatically only when someone logs in. Because of that they are useless to me.Their inability to handle non-interactive starts is a bummer too. FTP->SFTP wrappers don't count as solution despite of integrated windows support for ftp drives. The way they are handled in windows makes ftp mapping unusable without some external ftp drive mapper software.
I would like my Ubuntu server to show up as a drive on my XP home machine. I have loaded samba on to the server but I can only get it to show as the printer and faxes under my work group. Also is there a way to have my Ubuntu laptop to auto mount the server when I am on my home network?

I am running Live 12 on my CD rom drive of my dying laptop. I have a major Windows registry error on that system and am working to recover my files. I have successfully moved a couple of folders from the laptop to my Seagate Free Agent Drive as a test.What I would like to know is, is there a way to copy my files and folders without literally dragging and dropping each one? I have reformatted my hard drive with allocation size 64K(formatted on windows with 64k setting) for a better performance on my WDTV HD media player(dealing with large files).When I mount this drive on Linux, the properties tells me that"blksize=4096".If I keep writing files using this default setting(blksize=4096) to my NTFS formatted hard drive, will my WDTV be able to benefit from the performance improvement of 64k allocation size ?I am confused, Does it have anything to do with "blksize=4096". ?Should I try and mount my hard drive with a larger blksize ?I did some research on google but couldn't find an option to increase the blksize when mounting an NTFS pre-formatted drive

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhy would gparted not show a mounted partition (and unassigned space)? This is on a Sandisk Sansa e270 which mounts it's data on /media/Sansa. I can utilize the music files but the player won't work. I'd like to reinstall the player software but the Sandisk utilities won't even install (in Windows) if the player software is not working. I thought it would be easy in linux but Gparted doesn't show either the mounted partition or device software partition and it used to so.

The problem is that on the new computer neither Ubuntu or XP can "see" the FAT32 partition. I intend to use the FAT32 partition for photo images and old Windows files and need access from both Ubintu and XP.

-I tried /dev/sr0/setup.exe but it returned an error.
-I tried /dev/sr0/media/setup.exe. returned the same error.
-I tried /dev/media/setup.exe. Also no good.

I've been looking for a program to easily monitor hard drive access,what I am finding doesn't seem to do what I (and others) want. Does Linux have a program to show me what is writing to the hard drive and where, in real-time? It seems gamin doesn't present the info in a human-usable form and loggedfs needs fuse, which I am not sure is available now. Something with a gui would be nice, but I am not sure Linux has such a program, like Windows does. Other threads here indicate that there are not many choices and strace needs a path, which I don't know yet.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have WD external hdd (80GB) formatted with fat32. I was using this hdd to transfer the data from computer A (LINUX, RH9) to computer B (Win7).
I was keep copying and deleting the data in the WD hdd during the data transfer because the amount to transfer is more than 300GB.
After doing this several times (and the WD drive was emptied), comp. A said the disk is full. I checked using 'df' and it was really full but 'ls -la' shows that there is no data in it.
I checked it in comp. B, and it showed empty. I tried to format in comp. A using 'mkdosfs -F 32 /dev/xxx# (block#)', but showed an error message like below.
'Warning: block count mismatch: found 78xxxxx but assuming 0'.
I found a similar situation in this forum metioning 'possible damaged linux kernel (not exactly same expression though)', so I re-installed linux in comp. A, but the problem was not solved.
