ubuntu 10.10/wubi/asus 1201ni have installed screenlets via synaptics and added two screenlets to my desktop.i added screenlets to the autostart menu, pointing it to a folder inside my documents folder, where the launching icon of this software is located.since then, after reboot a gedit window appears on my desktop and says the following :

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu version 10.10 64-bit and since then closing GEdit won't stop the process automatically when the window is closed and I have to kill it manually. I didn't have this problem with version 10.04 (also 64-bit) and I didn't change any settings after the upgrade.

The shut down screen just pops up within a few seconds after logging in. It even occurs at the login screen. Once it appears, it'll repeatedly close & reopen. It appears very blocky and some of the letters run into each other, regardless of font chosen. Here is a pic of the issue: Has anyone any ideas as to what is going wrong? I've gone through the 'Preferences' on the terminal window but nothing I change helps.

I'm a bit puzzled by new "keyring everywhere" feature, well the case: Now I'm using 11.3 brand new suse and just when I want to connect to INTERNET via my DSL connection, a keyring password window appears, well I fill in the keyring password and hit enter, then another window pops out with my DSL connection asking me to enter a password for my DSL connection (but I've already set it up it before) and ok, I enter my password hit enter, but DSL window pops out again! and nothing happens,
I do it several times like a puppet, then I delete my DSL connection and make it again, so everything works with passwords no(no keyring is being promted). SO what do I do wrong? How can I disable this keyring feature, I do not need it at all, why do I need to recreate my connection every single time?
I just tried installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto my Playstation 3. I installed the otheros.bld fine (which I downloaded via a link provided on the OpenSUSE website). I then inserted my 32-bit Gnome CD for installation and restarted my system. Then on startup, a blue/grey screen appears. Here are the links to the screenshot (sorry for poor quality):

As you can see, the only option is for me to select the gameboot, which obviously takes me back to the Playstation XMB. There are keys at the bottom of the screen, but this is only to change the resolution. So I have no option to install the OS.
Does anybody know why this screen appears and have any ideas on how I can get around this problem to install SUSE onto my Playstation?

View 1 Replies View RelatedA couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu Security and Recommended Updates that included an update to Linux Kernel 2.6.31-20. Upon installing these updates I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. So I rebooted and encountered a Hyper Transport Sync Flood error each time I tried to boot, preventing me from booting into the OS.The above linked forum thread about the error suggested I manually adjust voltage settings in the BIOS to resolve the issue, so I gave it a try to no avail. Then I decided I would just reset my BIOS settings to the defaults (seeing as I hadn't edited that many settings to begin with). After doing so, I tried booting only to encounter a black screen with "GRUB _" printed on it.
I have encountered this issue before when I initially installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my system, but I'm not sure whether this occurrence is strictly BIOS setting related or if something effected my bootloader. (On a side note, resetting my BIOS settings to defaults seemed to, at least for now, eliminate the Hyper Transport Sync Flood error I was getting...and instead leave me with another problem.)I used this script created by meierfra. to provide info on my current boot setup, the results of which are displayed below.

When scrolling down in nano with keyboard (holding "down" key), nano scrolls several lines at once each time. Is there any possibility to configure it so it will scroll one line each time like gedit does when scrolling in gedit?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

View 9 Replies View RelatedUpon booting this morning, my Ubuntu 11.04 install no longer shows the login window at startup. The background is still there, as well as the on-screen keyboard I have set to appear at startup. tty1-6 all work just fine, although they they dont automatically connect to wifi so i have to go wired (or learn how to connect to wifi via tty1) if i need to use the internet for this. Before this issue popped up, I had tried out xmonad and upon switching back to compiz, I have to run "compiz --replace" every time I log in which may have something to do with this problem. I also installed and uninstalled gnome 3 before that, so I may have broken something with all that.

sudo cp /usr/share/applications/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop /usr/share/gdm/autostart/loginwindow,
and:
sudo unlink /usr/share/gdm/autostart/loginwindow/gdm-simple-greeter.desktop
i later realized what i did and i tried to unlink the gnome-appearance-properties.desktop but no luck.
is there any way to stop the appearance properties from popping up at login, and to reinstall the gdm-simple-greeter.desktop ?
Vidalia control panel has no check box for "show this window on startup". Is there a way using linux commands to stop it from popping up or would I need to change something else?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have conky running a simple script on my Ubuntu 11.04 install. Running conky from using ALT-F2 is fine, but I have have conky added to the startup list, and when it runs from this, the conky window is different (ie not integrated with desktop layer). It has some shadowing around the edge and it seems to be on a layer other than the desktop. In addition to this, it stops running after a short while. I then run conky from ALT-F2 again and it's appears as I want, and stays there all day. I have included what I think is the relevant code below from my conkyrc. Has anyone had similar issues with a suitable way to resolve the problem?

What I want is my window controls to be on the right side of the window when the window is in full screen mode.
Also I've had an issue with the Unity dockbar glitching out. I can still click on the buttons (i.e. the logout button) but it displays like a nintendo game inserted crooked. Is there a way to 'restart' unity without log out/ log in?
Any one else experienced any glitches with unity auto hiding/showing?
I have asked for a video capturing software before but recommend a GOOD screen recorder where you can select the window/window size the axis and also a good editing software which will render/export into FULL 720p HD

I was also able to define a default window size of a new terminal window. But since after upgrading to to the first release this year and a complete new installation of the current release Maverick i do not find this option anymore. Is there a way how to set up the terminal default window size?
View 9 Replies View RelatedIf you don't know, users are able to quickly resize windows using the "ALT+MiddleClick" key shortcut/combo. Basically, hold the ALT key, and mouse middle click and hold on a window. Move the mouse around, and it will resize the window for you.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open a single Window.
2) Near the bottom-right-hand corner of the window, ALT+MiddleClick and drag. It should resize. Great. It works.
What Doesn't Work:
Now, the problem arises when you have multiple windows open on the desktop, they are "layered". i.e. you might have several windows open "behind" the one currently "up front". Example:
If I try to ALT+MiddleClick the "foreground window", it rarely actually resizes THAT window, and instead jumps one of the windows from behind to the front, and resizes that one instead!
STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1) Open 3x gnome-terminal windows and say some nautilus window. Place them overtop one another. (like the above image)
2) Try to ALT+MiddleClick the foreground window.
3) Repeat this always trying to grab the foreground window.

I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).
