every time I start ubuntu and before the GUI appears I get this message Quote: could not find"/media/hdisk1/ubuntu/pictures". Please check spilling and try again this file mentioned was on an external HDD , I copied it to the pictures folder on ubuntu then I used a picture as a wallpaper after that I got this problem

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running 10.10 x64. Every time I boot up, after logging in I am getting several error messages to the effect of:
"Cannot find /media/<various mount points>"
such as /media/sdc1, /media/sdc1/Software, etc. I *think* these are coming from Nautilus, which is starting up automatically, but not 100% certain about that. These devices DID exist at one time, but no longer (I changed the mount point). There is still /dev/sdc1 but I don't think that alone has anything to do with it. I see no evidence of them in fstab or /media. I no longer have any shortcuts to them in Nautilus either.
I am just asking because i want to be sure, that sensitive data can not be extracted from my computer unencrypted, using cached files. For instance i would not want my girlfriend's picture to be uploaded to some random site, whereas it normally stays on an AES encrypted volume, but i viewed it once, so it was available in some cache folder, unencrypted - yea, sadly, it happened in windows -.

Running Ubuntu 10.10 along side Windows7 on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop. Everything works in Windows. Everything works in Ubuntu, except for 2 things.1) I can live with not being able to enable/disable wifi.) I cannot read photos from an SD card plugged into the laptops SD card reader. When I open the SD card in Ubuntu, I can see the file name, but the thumbnails show messed up pictures. Usually, the bottom half of the photo is solid green, and there are usually lines running through the photo, or it is divided into quadrants with one quadrant being ok, but the rest having the green and/or lines.I assume the driver for the card reader is not correct. Card reader works fine in Windows. So I have to reboot into windows, copy pictures from reader to a folder, then reboot into Ubuntu and I can see and open the photos just fine. Just cannot read and copy them from the card while in Ubuntu.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have directory with sub directories in it. Inside I have bunch of pictures. I would like to find all pictures, and move them to one tmp directory. While moving there might be files with same names. The command I use:
--- find . -name '*JPG' -exec mv -i {} /home/xxx/xxx/xxx/Pictures/2004/tmp ; ---
now the problem comes with overwrite if there are two files with same name. Is there any simple way to copy all files into one directory and not to loose any, appending certain, even random char, to the 2nd file would do.
Trying to find a way to have the find command perform a search using multiple file extensions such as "find all pics" i.e. .jpg, .png, .gif, .raw etc. I would have thought something like the following would have worked, but apparently I'm doing something wrong:
sudo find / -type f -iname "*.jpg" "*.png" "*.gif" -printf
I'm guessing find simply doesn't support more than one "-name/-iname" at a time? Or perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way? I realize most times there's several different ways to skin a cat when a task is requested in linux/unix.
I just tried installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto my Playstation 3. I installed the otheros.bld fine (which I downloaded via a link provided on the OpenSUSE website). I then inserted my 32-bit Gnome CD for installation and restarted my system. Then on startup, a blue/grey screen appears. Here are the links to the screenshot (sorry for poor quality):

As you can see, the only option is for me to select the gameboot, which obviously takes me back to the Playstation XMB. There are keys at the bottom of the screen, but this is only to change the resolution. So I have no option to install the OS.
Does anybody know why this screen appears and have any ideas on how I can get around this problem to install SUSE onto my Playstation?
A couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu Security and Recommended Updates that included an update to Linux Kernel 2.6.31-20. Upon installing these updates I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. So I rebooted and encountered a Hyper Transport Sync Flood error each time I tried to boot, preventing me from booting into the OS.The above linked forum thread about the error suggested I manually adjust voltage settings in the BIOS to resolve the issue, so I gave it a try to no avail. Then I decided I would just reset my BIOS settings to the defaults (seeing as I hadn't edited that many settings to begin with). After doing so, I tried booting only to encounter a black screen with "GRUB _" printed on it.
I have encountered this issue before when I initially installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my system, but I'm not sure whether this occurrence is strictly BIOS setting related or if something effected my bootloader. (On a side note, resetting my BIOS settings to defaults seemed to, at least for now, eliminate the Hyper Transport Sync Flood error I was getting...and instead leave me with another problem.)I used this script created by meierfra. to provide info on my current boot setup, the results of which are displayed below.

I am attempting to make an application that requires a variety of libraries associated with OpenGL. So far I have managed to find most of them in the devel packages (Mesa, freeglut) that come with the standard distribution. However, I cannot find libglui, though it appears to be standard in some other distributions.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.
View 1 Replies View Relatedmultiple issues started happening on a partition of mine. (probably whole installation and i haven't noticed since most of my files are on that partition)the most important one is that a certain folder appears to be empty even though it isn't. (screenshot "issue1")
the second issue is that files that are no longer on on the root folder of the partition (for example, lynx5.jpg on the screenshot "issue2") appear to be there. on "issue2" screenshot, it's the lynx image and the Gr_trees folder. removing them by deleting them doesn't work. moving there somewhere else makes them temporary gone - they reappear on reboot though. (the screenshots seem to be automatically converted to jpg when uploaded, if there is a problem you can find them here as well:[URL]..
edit : even though it's not the normal way to solve a problem : if reinstallation is definitely going to solve the problem, i have nothing against it.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWell, wouldn't you just know it? I encountered problems when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 with update-manager. What a surprise. Anyway, here are the problems:1. Cannot enable desktop effects. Error appears after searching for drivers.
2. 2-3 minute boot times. Used to be 40 seconds. It spends 2 *minutes* in the BIOS before actually starting Ubuntu.
3. The volume controls on my laptop's keyboard now control PCM rather than Master, so everything is horrifically loud past three clicks, and two quiet under that.
4. The bootsplash displays at 1280x800, my monitor's resolution, and looks pretty. The log in screen, however, switches to what looks like 1024x768. When I log in it changes back to 1280x800.
5. Cannot boot into Windows from grub. When I select Windows, a blinking cursor appears in the top left corner and stays there. Nothing happens
I have a problem with streaming from .mov from Appl.com. As most of you must know, the iPhone 4 was announced in WWDC 10 on Monday. GstDecodeBin2: This appears to be a text file When I click the HD , totem opens, and video starts streaming, but it is of a terrible quality (so much for Apple's "perfect presentation" rep). I'm not so sure this is so much a problem of Ubuntu as of my network connection. I have heard that "live" streams are not of that great quality because the video player is prioritizing to deliver live continuous stream, I can understand that. But I want quality video. So, can any of you Linux guru's (I am a newbie) tell me if this is a problem with Ubuntu (not proper mov codecs?), my connection? Apple?
Also, as I understand it, if I were to download the stream, it would have full quality because the player isn't focusing on delivering it live. Is there any app/Firefox extension/hack/terminal code, etc.
My plex media server does not work with systemd apparently but running the command below makes plex startup properly

I have search on the net for this problem and i have understand it a little. But my situation is a bit different and because i don't want to format my hard disc i wanna try to fix it. So before a couple months i download ubuntu 9.10 and i installed it a month later. But my computer used to crash all the time and i couldnt use it. So i download the latest ubuntu 10.4 and install it while having windows xp and the old ubuntu 9.10(so i had windows xp, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.4 partitions). Now i tried to delete the partition of ubuntu 9.10 from disc utility. so i have the message i wrote above when i boot. I dont wanna delete my windows xp and ubuntu 10.4. what should i do to stop this message from appearing.
I am having trouble both installing or even just booting the live CD. I have to interrupt the boot to give the nomodeset boot option.
Once I get the Ubuntu splash with the oscillating red and white dots for several moments, I get the Busybox with the error message "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system"
If I do a dmesg I then see a lot of sr0 errors. I have an onboard SCSI controller but no scsi devices. I am not sure if this matters.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have somehow gotten two instances of Mediatomb running on my Ubuntu 10.04.1 how to get rid of one of them.There is one copy running as a daemon on system startup - that's the one I want to keep.There is another copy running when I log in with my user account - this is the one I want to prevent from running.I have looked in my Startup folder in the GUI and also in my .profile script for my user account but I don't see any references to mediatomb there. Where else should I look?I think the daemon version is running via an entry in init.d, but other than where I've already looked I don't know how to find out how the second copy is getting initiated during login. It only seems to show up when I log in to the GUI on Ubuntu - not when I connect to the machine remotely via SSH.

The iso install DVD boots up ok, says 'welcome' in far more languages than I understand, I select English & US English then all useful progress stops. It suddenly can't detect my CD/DVD (although it DID when the system booted with the CD/DVD drive selected as 1st device to try to boot). I've tried pushing the button to eject and reload the DVD, no dice. Nothing seems to work, when I finally go for shutdown it suggests I might need to load a driver. My drive is a fairly new plextor px-b940sa.
Searching the plextor corp site for linux turns up zilch as does the knowledge base at novell.com. it's all in knowing the right magics words i suppose. my chip is the intel 6 core. my mobo is asus p6x58d (actually im wondering if it's the culprit because it does some fancy tricks). i tried my store-bought 11.1 suse install disk, it has the same difficulty. i suppose a usb-linked external dvd drive might be the obvious solution (won't cost too much but fairly likely to have some problem).
