View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Clear 4G+ Mobile USB modem. It is a Sierra Wireless Air Card 250u. I was able to get a brief 3G connection out of the box, with Squeeze 6.0. I would be happy to at least get connection manager working, as it does in Windows XP.
Subsequent edit. I did a clean install of 6.0 Squeeze, and Clear USB modum worked right out of the box. All I had to do was, right click on Network Manager icon on upper right corner of screen, checked enable mobile broadband. clicked on edit connection info. There I manually entered Clear as my provider, checked on connect auto, and left other fields blank or default settings. I still only get 3G, but I have multiple barriers to a microwave signal in my location. But I still will continue and may need help as I configure Clears Connection Manager, and or firmware.

I am guessing I would have to locate firmware to make this device work in linux.
A friend has a website. the site has been moved to another server. I am inside of a private network.
Problem: when trying to reach his website, my browser keeps connecting to the old server which is on another continent
Windows machines have no problem with this. They connect to the new server without issues.
NOW what is hard to understand: even the PING utility is pinging the old server.
I tried these and none works:
- computer restart
- Clear private data in Iceweasel (has ntg to do with PING, but tried...)
- installed nscd and restarted the service
- modified /etc/resolv.conf to point to another nameserver than modified it back
At the same computer, if I reboot and load Windows, the browser has no problem connecting to the new server.
I know to start emacs with no window system, I do:
emacs -nw filename.txt
But, I don't want to specify -nw constantly. What do I add in my .emacs to do this automatically?
ubuntu 10.10/wubi/asus 1201ni have installed screenlets via synaptics and added two screenlets to my desktop.i added screenlets to the autostart menu, pointing it to a folder inside my documents folder, where the launching icon of this software is located.since then, after reboot a gedit window appears on my desktop and says the following :

Upon booting this morning, my Ubuntu 11.04 install no longer shows the login window at startup. The background is still there, as well as the on-screen keyboard I have set to appear at startup. tty1-6 all work just fine, although they they dont automatically connect to wifi so i have to go wired (or learn how to connect to wifi via tty1) if i need to use the internet for this. Before this issue popped up, I had tried out xmonad and upon switching back to compiz, I have to run "compiz --replace" every time I log in which may have something to do with this problem. I also installed and uninstalled gnome 3 before that, so I may have broken something with all that.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am fairly used to Ubuntu, and i decided to try and change my login background (10.10) using the code:
sudo cp /usr/share/applications/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop /usr/share/gdm/autostart/loginwindow,
and:
sudo unlink /usr/share/gdm/autostart/loginwindow/gdm-simple-greeter.desktop
i later realized what i did and i tried to unlink the gnome-appearance-properties.desktop but no luck.
is there any way to stop the appearance properties from popping up at login, and to reinstall the gdm-simple-greeter.desktop ?
Vidalia control panel has no check box for "show this window on startup". Is there a way using linux commands to stop it from popping up or would I need to change something else?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have conky running a simple script on my Ubuntu 11.04 install. Running conky from using ALT-F2 is fine, but I have have conky added to the startup list, and when it runs from this, the conky window is different (ie not integrated with desktop layer). It has some shadowing around the edge and it seems to be on a layer other than the desktop. In addition to this, it stops running after a short while. I then run conky from ALT-F2 again and it's appears as I want, and stays there all day. I have included what I think is the relevant code below from my conkyrc. Has anyone had similar issues with a suitable way to resolve the problem?
Code:
own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_type override
#own_window_type desktop
#own_window_type normal

own_window_type conky
own_window_class Conky

I am using a Debian Lenny and apache2.
In an earlier post on the forum I was able to configure Apache Reverse Proxy by changing apache2.conf the sites hosted at that time were

Now I have formatted my server and it is a fresh installation of Debian Lenny and apache2 on it so previous settings are not there.
This time I created two virtual hosts. There are two files in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf site1.[url]

The configuration of these are as follows:

My cache is full, and I've tried doing "apt-get clean" to no avail. I also can't find any apt.conf file in my system. Here is a screenshot of the error message that pops up when I open Synaptic Package Manager:PS: I'm pretty new to Linux, especially Debian; most of my Unix-like OS experience is with Mac OS X. My Musix installation is in a VMWare machine.

I found one post on the subject with no reply and have read the bug reports and the problem was not mentioned. I tried to find the file containing the history without success.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe package manager is scrambled in my Ubuntu 11.04. It started with the repositories list being scrambled with multiple entries. Now when the Package Manager is launched it just accesses the hard drive forever. I did give it a half an hour just in case so it clearly stuck in a loop of some kind.
What I'd like to know is: Is there some way to reset, clear, turn off or de-select the added Repositories list from the command line (terminal.) This seems to be the only way since the Package Manager gets stuck. Keep in mind that I'm only slightly competent with Linux and have no idea where the Debian Package Manager data is located or how it works. If I go poking around without at least some guidance I may make things worse.
The problem seems to be spreading. Got stuck again while saving this message. Turned off the system, rebooted to recovery mode and did a file system check. Okay for now. Switching to clean OS on other partition.
I'll check for answers there but it's only Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd very much prefer to have 11.04 working and not have an effectively dead partition and don't want to loose everything on it with a re-format and 2 day re-install process (no installation disk.)
Found this 'Startup Disk Creator' in Ubuntu,it is useful, how we get it install in Debian Squeeze? There's a Unetbootin for Debian, but it pull in lots of qt stuff,I don't like it.

When i`ll focus the window everything is fine.
I would like to delete some files stored in the personal directory, say .adobe, .macromedia, .xsession-errors, on every start-up or shutting down. I can do it with cron but I would like to learn different (simpler) options. The thing is, I haven't been able to input the proper terms in a search engine. Note that these files must exist in their default location during the session. This is, I don't want to make them links to /dev/null or move them to /tmp.

Question:
Upon logging in (typically, for the first time each day) I would like to see a console window/shell or a simple terminal-emulator/shell automatically open up.
The reason is: In order to get my .bashrc to execute I have to log-in, then bring up an xterm or some other terminal-emulator.
Background: My .bashrc has a once-per-day routine/section that will set up my desktop to look the way I want it on my initial log-in (primarily with my Java applications up/running and displayed and waiting for me).
Then, later on that day whenever I bring up new bash shells, my .bashrc is executed but that once-per-day routine/section is no longer executed.
I recently installed Debian 8.1 on an old (2008 maybe?) macbook. I would like to use the right hand side apple/command key as a right click. I've been using xmodmap commands in the terminal, but I'd like to write a shell script to do it automatically on boot or on login.
I've tried init.d, I've tried crontab, I've tried rc.local.
The xmodmap commands I am calling are Code: Select allxmodmap -e "keycode 134 = Pointer_Button3" and then Code: Select allxkbset m
my shell script is as follows
/usr/keymap
Code: Select all#!/bin/bash
xmodmap -e "keycode 134 = Pointer_Button3"
xkbset m
I've modified keymap to be executable, just typing /usr/keymap into the terminal will map the keys correctly. I've tried with and without the .sh suffix. I've tried adding sh before the file path in crontab. I've also tried adding sleep 20 inside the shell script as well as inside crontab joining the two commands with &&
