I've just installed Kubuntu 11.04, switched on wobbly windows effect. It runs very smooth on my Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS with dual screen twinview turned on. However, I get these lines when I drag/move the window upwards - see screenshot:

Since I installed Lucid I have found that when I drag a window to the top of the screen in KDE, unless I do so very carefully and gently, it maximises and fills the screen. How do I stop this pointless and annoying behaviour?

Since I have upgraded to to 10.10, I've noticed that I can no longer drag programs to another desktop. Somehow this setting must have been disabled. How does one reactive this setting? (I'm guessing its Compiz related...)

when using desktop effects windows seem to get stuck in mid-animation and produce ghost windows which will disappear and go back to normal if i click on a blank area of the desktop. Its not a huge problem, everything else works really well and the issue goes away when i turn the desktop effects off. was wondering if anyone else has seen this?? I am running SLI on quad nvidia gpus so maybe this is a driver issue??

When Desktop Effects are enabled in KDE the window for Tecplot 'bleeds' through, as if ~40% transparent in various regions. Disabling desktop effects fixes this, however, I would like to keep them. Is there a way to disable desktop effects on a single window/application?

If any window opens initially on full screen (maximized) the "desktop effects" switch off. I then have to reset "enable desktop effects".
It happens with any window from any application that opens full screen.
If a window is maximized after it has already opened all is fine, it does not stop the desktop effects.
Running: openSUSE 14.4

I'm having trouble with my Ubuntu VM's --I'm running a Win 7 Home Premium Host, (8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, NVidia GeForce Video) Oracle VirtualBox (Current version)
-- When I set up Linux VM's w/ 3D Acceleration, and 128MB Video Ram,
-- I can't enable the 'Extra' Video Effects, to get Compiz working.
-- Even when VBox Guest Additions is installed.
VBox Guest Additions does let me use Full Screen, & Seamless mode, correctly though.
But if I try to set 'Extra' Video Effects, it can't find the correct driver.
Code:
ps -A | grep compiz
Does not show compiz running.
FYI: Nor can I get Unity on 11.04 Alpha 1, under the VM.

I'm trying to manipulate the existing windows from within a python script similar to the BASH wmctrl. I've got the basics down with PyWnck, but I need to be able to tell when a window is actively being dragged (or just when the title bar is being clicked). I doubt this is a wnck function. direction of the right python package?

Yesterday I adjusted the position of the windows controls back to what it was before, by using the configuration editor to set apps / metacity / general / button layout to "menu:minimize, maximize, close". At the time everything seemed good, the buttons moved, and it all worked. This morning I rebooted back into Lucid Lynx Ubuntu 64 bit, and now I find there are no controls on the windows, and I cannot even click and drag them, or double click the title bar to maximize! I checked, and the string I altered is still the same. I can still move windows with Alt-F7 and the mouse, and can resize by dragging out the bottom right corner.

How would you make a window drag'n'drop? I have hidden the title bar using:
Code: self.window.set_decorated(False)
But I still want this window to be moveable, by clicking and dragging anywhere within the window. I would rather just use pyGTK, but Xlib is fine with me as well.

Is there a way to disable window drag from within the window? I mean, I want the window to be movable only from the title bar. But now even if you drag the window from the content, the drag action is fired.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome 2.30.2 desktop environment. When I drag a window it only shows the outline of the window while doing that. How can I change the settings so that not just the outline but the whole window still shows while I'm dragging it.
Also feel free to give me any tips on making my desktop look cool

I am trying to stop my left click from moving the window. This is not Meta + Left click but just simple Left click in the area marked with blue. It happens if I Left click drag on the Titlebar as well. I have tried setting 'Nothing' for Meta + Left click setting shown in the image but the behaviour continues.
Is this a bug or can I stop this somehow ?

With previous installs of Ubuntu, I was able to get the "wobbly window" effect working. In 11.04, I have to go through the compiz config utility. When there, I check "wobby window effect" and lo and behold, nothing happens. In fact, none of the modifications to the compiz config utility work. This is really frustrating. I can't find a solution anywhere.
The last thing I want to hear though is that it must be my graphics card. If this is your response, please don't even bother. Just leave this thread at once.

I'm fairly new to ubuntu and I've been messing around with customizing my desktop/UI over the past week or so and I must have messed something up. After I got sick of how slow Wallpapoz was to change backgrounds between workspaces (I'm using GNOME) I turned on the Wallpaper plugin in Compiz and turned off the nautilus desktop. That worked great for the backgrounds but now whenever I try to drag windows around the cursor shudders and shakes and the wondows won't move smoothly. I eventually get them to where I want them to go but it's very annoying.
So far, I have re-enabled the nautilus desktop and reinstalled nautilus with synaptic, neither of which did anything.

I was hoping someone could tell me how to turn off the basic windows effects in compiz but keep it turned on so I can use something like Docky.
The reason is because nautilus takes a few painful seconds to open up with the effects turned on and some times I end up clicking a folder etc a second time thinking it hasn't opened.

already having used it on my very bad laptop, with minimal enjoyment. now, i'm running fc13 through virtual box on my quadcore 6gb ddr3 hp pavilion, and i can say, i finally know what compiz feels like well, i've gotten compiz, and emerald, and i'm happy with what it has to offer. yet, when i scroll through linux videos videos, the windows open in the desktop have very nice window glossy effects. for instance, through emerald, i can get my titlebar to be nice and glossy. through my default window themer, i can get my panel to be glossy as well.
however, in these videos, for example, when they have a bash shell open, the whole window screen is uniformly glossy. unlike the default terminal appearance of black text on a white background, they have it looking much better. is it possible to configure emerald and/or other window themers to get this effect?

After upgrading from 9.10 karmic to 10.04 lucid, the windows of applications have no titlebars and I cannot move or resize them. Also if I have System, Preferences, Apprearance, Visual Effects, set to normal or extra the settings are lost after a logout/in or reboot. I have another user login and the Vishual Effects settings are remembered with it, but with my main more priviledged user, they are not. I sort of got around the problem by adding compiz to Startup Applications, but that only allows the Titlebars to show at at Normal or Extra settings in Appearance, Vishual Effects. It is reset to Normal or Extra when I select None before logging out/in. Should there be a part of compiz that starts even when none Vishual Effects is selected? (to show titlebars etc) Where is the configuration file that is meant to start compiz per user? I don't think Startup Applications settings properly deal with it.

I've been running Ubuntu on my laptop for a couple months now and I've been using compiz settings manager. For some reason I can't seem to get the window effects for minimizing, closing, etc. to work. I have followed a few tutorials and nothing seems to make any difference. As far as I can tell, that is the only thing in compiz that is not working. I am running Ubuntu 10.10

I cannot change my window controls to Ambiance theme when compiz effects are on. When I turn off compiz effects, theme selection works as a charm, but when I turn compiz effects on again, I get back to human-clearlooks. In Appearance Preferences -> Theme I can still see Ambiance is selected, but window controls are from human-clearlooks. Every theme changes only colors, icons, fonts etc, but window controls remain. And remain on the right side of window. Everything works as expected when I turn off compiz effects.
In CompizConfig Settings Manager -> Effects -> Window Decoration Command is specified to /usr/bin/compiz-decorator What can I do to have buttons of the left side? I tried to change in gconf-editor in apps -> metacity -> general -> button_layout to "close, minimize, maximize:menu", but it still has no effect on compiz

I'm using the Default Lucid Ambiance theme. What I noticed, and am quite delighted by this fact, is that windows are draggable not only by their titlebar, but the whole area which is black (which means the "File, Edit, etc." menu is draggable as well) I noticed this behavior in all apps (ex. Synaptic, Evolution) except Firefox. If I want to drag its window, I have to click directly on the titlebar, which is the top half of the black area. I find it confusing.
