I have setup a VPS server, created two accounts to two domains respectively, and in one account I built a tool to manage other accounts. I have been rigorously researching and found information, however not implemented yet, about granting apache sudo rights through an interface on one account, so that it can execute scripts as root to manage installations in other accounts. what I mean this is my tool will use 'rsync' to duplicate installations from any account into any account.
My question for security, is it secure to grant apache sudo rights? I have not resolved successfully granting it permissions, and I would not want to waste my time investigating more on it if it can compromise the system in any way.
In your experience, is it feasible to build such a tool like I described? I have the tool working to copy within account and to addon domains and it works great, but I want it to manage all accounts on the server.

I'm configuring some security and i'd like to run arpon to a specific device everytime wicd connects.So, if Wicd connects to a wireless, i'd launch gksu arpon -d -i eth2 (for example.) But this doesn't work, because it seems that gksu only works for X apps.I found that if i do: gnome-terminal -e 'sudo arpon -d -i eth2' It works, but it leaves me with a terminal window open, and i'd like to be asked for a password gksu style.I've also tried this: gksu -- arpon -d -i eth2which also works, but the program quits right after it's started.Am i missing something here?

I'm trying to produce some screenshots of the screen in which there's a window playing a video in avi format. The problem is whenever I take a shot, the video window appears 'solid blue' in the output image. Is there any way or program with which I can capture the current frame of the video

Alright, I edited "/etc/default/isc-dhcp-server" and set "eth0" as the only thing listed for interfaces. I also have the code below in "/etc/dhcp/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf" and I even copied it to "/etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf" for good measure, and I can't get the DHCP server to start. As an intermediate to advanced user, I am under the high assumption that it is broken since everything in the docs has been set. I have googled for two days and cannot find a fix, so before I report it as a broken package, would somebody with more experience with the package chime in?
Configuration file:
subnet 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option domain-name-servers 10.0.0.254;
option broadcast-address 10.0.0.255;
[Code].....
I hid my wireless setup because it contains my WiFi network info including key. This box is routing, doing DNS resolution, and firewalling just fine. I just cannot get the friggin' DHCP server to start no matter what I try.
Oh, and is it safe to delete "/etc/dhcp" or "/etc/dhcp3"? They appear to be duplicates of each other...

Anyone what this gksu error is about (it repeats it three times)
gksu-2.0.0-1.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm
# gksu ls

reason my Debian 5 system will not stop printing blank pages. I've got the CUPS system installed, and I've gone to the control page and canceled everything. I've also turned the printer off and restarted it several times. Every time it comes back online it starts printing blank pages again. My paper does not need to be heat treated. It's fine as it is. So, how to I stop this waste of electricity and printer MTBF? What else might be sending commands to the printer besides the CUPS system?

I have two systems, both running Squeeze, one (desktop) executes Java applications perfectly while the other (laptop) doesn't.
I found two small examples:
http://www.x2d.org/java/projects/fluffschack.jnlp
works well on both systems
[Code]....
All the online Java tests I have found tells me that all is fine. I've browsed around quite a bit, and some are suggesting incompatibilities between Java and certain display drivers, but unsure of how to proceed.

I have a problem with my 10.10 32bit installation. The shut down window repeated appears within a few seconds of use, and this is not user-invoked. The shut down screen just pops up within a few seconds after logging in. It even occurs at the login screen. Once it appears, it'll repeatedly close & reopen. I tried using 10.04 bit (which I normally use on my other computers), and have the same results. This is a new computer that I just bought
Intel Atom 330 (1.6GHz, dual-core), full specs in the link [URL] with a 4GB stick of RAM

I've already ran a memory test, and it's totally ok.Here's a video clip of what I am experiencing on my screen.

I installed debian with minimal packages (without an any X components). Later I installed xserver-xorg-video-intel , xserver-xorg-input-mouse, xserver-xorg-input-kbd ... and other X components through apt-get. Created a Xorg.conf file.
On execution of X, I see black screen without cursor. What are the other minimal packages that I need to install in order to run any window-manager like openbox.. ?

I've just installed openSUSE 11.3 on a workstation in my office and am having trouble with the font in the terminal window. It appears very blocky and some of the letters run into each other, regardless of font chosen. Here is a pic of the issue: Has anyone any ideas as to what is going wrong? I've gone through the 'Preferences' on the terminal window but nothing I change helps.

I'm a bit puzzled by new "keyring everywhere" feature, well the case: Now I'm using 11.3 brand new suse and just when I want to connect to INTERNET via my DSL connection, a keyring password window appears, well I fill in the keyring password and hit enter, then another window pops out with my DSL connection asking me to enter a password for my DSL connection (but I've already set it up it before) and ok, I enter my password hit enter, but DSL window pops out again! and nothing happens,
I do it several times like a puppet, then I delete my DSL connection and make it again, so everything works with passwords no(no keyring is being promted). SO what do I do wrong? How can I disable this keyring feature, I do not need it at all, why do I need to recreate my connection every single time?

We have created a stripped own version of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, and removed the screen saver and power management options from the desktop as we have turned off the menu. The reason for this is security as we do not want users having any other options then what shows on the desktop. What is the sudo command to get back to this or do I need to under the administrator profile Create a Launcher icon?

1. I have two RHEL 5.4 Linux machines on the same network, A and B.
2. I have an application running on Machine A needs to read a file on Machine B.
3. Do I have to use something like NFS, or is there a simple command to permit this?
Note: I read a related thread, but was hoping there's something "out of the box" instead of using NFS, HTTP, FTP, etc.

I have a minor issue with permissions. There are a couple of devices that I need r/w access to in /dev. Whenever I first boot up and log in as end user (not root) and I need to access the devices permission is denied. Logging in as root there's no problem accessing these devices. However as an end user every time I need the devices I have to first su to root to change R/W permissions (chmod 666).
Now, the good thing is that the permissions stick even as I logout and then log back in, but as soon as I reboot my computer (every night) I have to go and chmod manually. I'm trying to find a way to avoid having to su and chmod manually but I'm not having much luck. The devices I am trying to access are /dev/ttyS1 and /dev/windrvr6, when I first boot up and login as end user the permissions look as follows:
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 65 May 27 04:11 /dev/ttyS1
crw-r--r-- 1 root root 253, 0 May 27 09:12 /dev/windrvr6

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

I would like to install a more modern version of GNU utils (coreutils) on a debian linux system where I have no admin rights. Is there a way to do that?
The rationale is that I need a more modern version to the one installed in the system where I intend to run my analysis. I am trying to use "sort -R" or "shuf" to randomize lines in a big text file.
