Networking :: Bridging Or Routing Between 2 Segments With 2 Internet Providers

Mar 23, 2010

My roommate has a slow ADSL provider, and i have a much faster cable connection. He has his own residential gateway, and as do i. The goal i am trying to accomplish is to share 2 printers (1 behind each residential gateway) and also files between computers on the different LAN segments, but not share ISPs or DHCP servers.

Thus far, i have configured my residential gateway's DHCP server to have control of the 192.168.1.0/24 network and his gateway's DHCP server controls the 192.168.0.0/24 network. We've got a Slackware 13.0 Linux box connected on the 192.168.0.0/24 network which currently just serves a web page and accepts e-mail for a domain. My knowledge of networking fails me here as I'm not sure what piece of equipment i would need to buy to solve this puzzle (bridge or router). I know iproute2 can do wonderful things on Linux, and i figure it would be easier to just shove a NIC or 2 in the Linux box and make it do what i need instead of buying more networking equipment.

Networking :: Have 2 Internet Providers At Office And Want To Use A Single Router To Route Them Both?

Jul 8, 2011

I have a weird issue with source routing on a linux box.The plan goes like this:I have 2 internet providers at my office and i want to use a single router to route them both ( i don't need load balancing or failover). I just want access to either provider based on the ip i use on my pc. The first provider, let's call it RDS, is simple: i've got an RDS_IP, RDS_MASK and RDS_GW.The second provider is complicated, we'll call it INES. I have a INES_IP, INES_MASK, INES_GW and they also gave me a subnet of public ip's: ILAN_NET which i have to route myself through INES_IP.I also have a third nic with an local ip: LAN_NET and an alias for the INES subnet: ILAN_NETthe router has dhcp enabled, giving by default ip's from LAN_NET and using the default gw, RDSI have snat for the LAN_NET to go through RDS.

If i enter an ip from the ILAN_NET, instead of routing in through the INES_GW, it also goes through RDS_GW.the routing i've used for about 5 months has worked perfectly untill one day, when it just stopped. this is my setup:ip route add $RDS_MASK dev $RDS_IF src $RDS_IP table rdsip route add default via $RDS_GW table rdsip route add $INES_MASK dev $INES_IF src $INES_IP table inesip route add default via $INES_GW table inesip route add default via $RDS_GWip rule add from $RDS_IP table rdsip rule add from $INES_IP table inesip route add $LAN_NET dev $LAN_IF table rdsip route add 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo table rdsip route add $ILAN_NET dev $ILAN_IF table inesip route add 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo table ineswhat puzzles me the most is that this setup has worked, and now it doesn't .... without any changes on the router.I've tried everything save for a format/reinstall.

Networking :: How To Connect ADSL Internet With LAN

Sep 19, 2009

I have an ADSL line that allows me for maximum of 4 concurrent users with external IP addreses. The IP addresses are not static (they change every 3-4days).

My current setup is as follows:
* A-link Roudrunner 44B Modem connected to the main line
* D-Link DI524 Router (port 1) connected to the modem
* This leaves me with 3 ports and Wireless for my other machines

What I wish to do is:
* Have all my machines with static IP addresses for LAN
* still have internet connection

I've tried enabling DHCP on the D-Dlink Router with LAN IP 192.168.0.1 and IP range from 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.199. Then gave my machine static IP 192.168.0.101, subnet 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1....obviously it didn't work. I've tried the above with both the modem being connected to the router via port1 and WAN port... but I have the same results. I also tried to do the same without the router (direct connection between the PC and modem) still got the same results. Could it be that what I am trying to do is not technically not possible due to my ISP setup to ensure no more than4 concurrent users limit is in place.

General :: Proper Way To Organize File Server ?

Mar 7, 2011

I am setting up a file server using Ubuntu and want to make sure I set up a folder structure that will last. Where should I be placing everything that I am sharing (Music, Pictures, Videos, etc)? In theory, if I was setting this up on Windows, I would create a folder directly under C: and set up the different areas of sharing under that (not that that approach would be best either).

Based on constructive criticism, the question is rather ambiguous. My question could be restated to ask "Where shouldn't I set this up? Would /usr be an appropriate place to start? Or would /opt be better?

Networking :: ADSL & Connects To Internet Via Leased Line

Jan 20, 2011

i have a leased line ( speed 2 MB ) which we use to connect to our mail server , oracle ERP etc.. we have a dhcp scope defined as 192.168.100.1-192.168.101.254. with a default gateway as 192.168.100.90 ( which is a cisco router ) we have a pix firewall ( 192.168.100.10 ).. now the gateway passed all the request to firewall..

we have an ADSL of 4 MB speed.. ip is 83.*.*.230 from ISP. i have a proxy server ( squid ) eth0 is connected to ISP (83.*.*.230).. eth1 to LAN ( 192.168.100.79 ) now the problem is when i put default gateway to eth1 ie 192.168.100.90 the squid connects to internet via leased line.. if i leave the default gateway field empty on eth1 , the squid connects to internet via ADSL ( which i want ) but the problem is no one on the lan cant ping the squid server ( no connectivity to internet for the whole LAN ) how can i solve this problem? i want squid to connect to internet with ADSL, but if i put gateway on eth1 ie LAN squid goes through leased line which i dont want to happen.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connect Only One PC At A Time To Adsl Router/modem For Internet Access?

Apr 1, 2011

I have 2 pcs at home. I dont have a switch so I can connect only one PC at a time to my adsl router/modem for internet access. In the past I had successfully connected the two PCs (NIC to NIC) to each other using the same ethernet cable which was supplied with my dlink adsl modem.

Recently the motherboard of on of my PC went bad so I replaced it with a new one. The problem is when I connect the two using the same Ethernet cable they won't connect. The lights on the Ethernet port won't light up. I can still connect both of them to the adsl router (NIC to Router) (one at a time).

Jun 19, 2011

I have an adsl modem acting as a bridge to my router my setup was working well for more than year now , but then the internet went slow . I set the modem back to PPPoE the problem was with the DNS server of the ISP so using ifup i set the dns t 8.8.8.8 (google) the connection is back , but when i set the modem back as a bridge slow internet does the router know that my dns is 8.8.8.8 or i should set the dns on the router ? I can't see an option to set the dns on the router ( i just enter my username and password from the isp to use PPPoE mode ) by the way i called the isp support they kept telling me to restart , i told them i did but i never restarted my pc . I'm sure if i tell them i'm running linux they will blame the os !

Ubuntu Servers :: Server For Internet Logging And Filtering

Jun 16, 2010

I'm in charge of a church computer lab which is open to children ages 6 to 16 for about 3 hours a week. We try to have adult supervision but don't have 100% coverage.

The lab has a maximum of 8 computers, a mixture of MACs, Windows XP, and Linux machines, depending on their state of repair.

The church's current internet connection is Verizon residential speed DSL to a 4 port wired plus wireless router in a locked office which also houses our Windows XP office computer and is adjacent to our locked pastor's office.

Internet access for the lab is by a single CAT5 cable passing through a small hole in a wall to a network switch on the other side. All of the lab computers are connected to the switch by CAT5 cable.

I would like to add a server in the locked office to log internet usage and block access to certain websites as needed. I think logging internet activity will be a good antidote in case one of the older ones wants to try to get sneaky and cover their tracks.

I envision building a computer from donated parts, including 2 NICs.

I have never done things from the server end, but think the server edition of Ubuntu would be a good starting point.

My goal is to be able to manage internet access with an easy to use GUI system so I could teach the basics to a couple of youth leaders to use it when I'm not there.

Ubuntu Servers :: Terminal Server Over Internet (RDP?) & File Sharing

Dec 16, 2010

my laptop seems to have a bad HDD, and I was thinking of trying to make it a "thin client." However since it is a laptop obviously I want to take it places. Is it possible to make a terminal server and "thin client" connect through the internet and not just LAN?The reason I quote thin client is because in my mind I am still going to need to use some HDD so I can connect to the internet and find my server.

To make things easier to read refer to the above as "question 1" and the velow as "question2" Thank you. And sorry for the inconvience. These topics I felt were to similar to make separate topics.I also have another question, the files I have on my server can be accessed by anyone on the network(added a second HDD and network shared it) how can I make it so that the LAN clients have to "login" (or it uses their computers login info to send them to only their files? And if that is possible can we expand it to allow me to use those logins through the internet?
