Ubuntu Servers :: Terminal Server Over Internet (RDP?) & File Sharing

my laptop seems to have a bad HDD, and I was thinking of trying to make it a "thin client." However since it is a laptop obviously I want to take it places. Is it possible to make a terminal server and "thin client" connect through the internet and not just LAN?The reason I quote thin client is because in my mind I am still going to need to use some HDD so I can connect to the internet and find my server.

These topics I felt were to similar to make separate topics.I also have another question, the files I have on my server can be accessed by anyone on the network(added a second HDD and network shared it) how can I make it so that the LAN clients have to "login" (or it uses their computers login info to send them to only their files? And if that is possible can we expand it to allow me to use those logins through the internet?
I have an ubuntu fileserver and an ubuntu laptop both running 10.10.For some reason I can't connect to the server (file or remote terminal) from the laptop, even though I can access ssh through terminal on my mac and have been able to mount the filesystem on another computer running the ubuntu liveCD. I just get the error 'no route to host'.I've tried turning off the firewall on the laptop and re-installing ssh on both computers, but I don't have a clue what to do next!
What can you recommend software to link sharing, and priority services such as VoIP, email, web, ftp others. The only thing I got it [URL], but it is not developed since 2008 ri do not know if it works.
I have discussed sharing an internet connection with my neighbor so we can both save money. We both have multiple computers connected to consumer grade routers. I've tinkered with WDS configurations but it was very unreliable and cumbersome to manage for reasons I won't get in to here. I'm thinking of getting my ubuntu server box to connect to my neighbor's wifi (via a USB wifi adapter) and share the connection through my router to my own subnet, (wired and wireless).
Can anyone shed some light on how I can best accomplish this?I can see a number of hurdles with this, maybe there are some I have yet to discover:Getting the USB wireless adapter to connect and stay that way via commandline.Configuring ICS from the USB connection to ethernet out to my router.Probably moving DHCP duty from my router to my server.Getting it all to work reliably well.
I did search, but could not find a solution.Right I've installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 on an old machine, installed fine and the system is running. I have a windows 7 desktop that is connected to the internet via wireless. The desktop then has an ethernet connection which is shared to the ubuntu server. The network looks like this.
Modem > Router > Desktop > Switch > Ubuntu Server My problem here is that there appears to be no connection from the server to the desktop. The server cannot connect to the internet.
When i ifconfig the ubuntu machine shows.eth0 link encap:Ethernetinet address: 192.168.137.2 Bcast:192.168.137.255 Mask 255.255.255.0 However on the windows desktop (the machine sharing the internet) these are the details for the connection to ubuntu server.ip 169.254.170.50 mask 255.255.255.0
is this a dhcp problem? is my server configured wrong?
I have two ubuntu systems. Both are not connected to any internet connection Both are not connected to any DHCP server. Both are connected to each other via simple 8 port switch.
Is it possible to share files between two ubuntu systems ?
For my broadband Internet I have several computers connected by cable to a Netgear DG834Gv5 router which has its own firewall.I have the wireless turned off by choice.My desktop and laptop are Linux only. (Ubuntu lucid lynx) I use the same username and password (very strong password) on both.What I want to know is can I set things up so I can browse and copy files between the computers using say nautilus on either computer?if not nautilus then I would happy to be able to do the same via a terminal window.I am not necessarily wanting to be told how but either what to Google for or where to find it.
I want to connect my newly created Gentoo DAW to a Fedora 12 PC, for file sharing and Internet purposes. The Fedora PC has 2 NICs, where one of them is connected to the apartment's Router. The Gentoo PC has 1 NIC. I am using a crossover Ethernet cable for connecting them. [UPDATE] I changed to crossover cable, now my two machines are able to ping each other! Here's the IPs:
I have a non-profit company. Currently we are using Dropbox to store and share files. We have the free 2 gig account and we are quickly running out of space. Naturally, we don't have a lot of money so I'm looking for a cheap alternative. I thought I might be able to set up a linux server in my home (with a back-up drive) do to the same thing. I want my board members and staff to be able to access these files from their homes or jobs and to be able to manipulate the files on the server. I'd like to be able to control access levels so that I can limit access to certain files and folders. I have a tech background but none of the others do so FTP is not really an option. It needs to be as simple as if they were looking at a file on their pc. Is this possible or am I totally dreaming here?
Right now I'm using Ubuntu but I just downloaded Fedora 15 and plan to play around with that a bit. The pc's I have are P4 2.6 with 1G RAM.
i'm trying to rig up my machine as a household server, i had it sharing internet to my other computers via a wifi router. (machine is a desktop and i have no wifi cards for it)then i installed java, squid and SAMBA. since then the other machines can't detect internet. java is screwy.i've updated it and it reduces the screen scramble.but squid is what has me.it seems to stop ubuntu telling my windows machines (win 7, and win xp) that there is internet available.intrestingly i can play multiplayer games on the windows machines with a ip address.(ip address of a mate. connected and ran ok.)
system specs ubuntu 11? (i know it updated from 10 a few weeks ago) internet - DODO mobile broadband (piggybacks on yes optus australia) wifi- via router connected to eth0
so someone know how to either
1. get ubuntu to state it's sharing internet again. or
2. turn mobile broadband off for 5-10 secs, re-enable, then connect to a mobile broadband called DODO automatically when internet drops out (a script perhaps?)
I have 2 laptops, one is a Acer travelmate (running xubuntu) and another one is a Dell studio (Running Windows 7). I also have an iMac..2 external hard drive and a BSNL 3G usb data card. I want to setup a network so i can share my files and internet connection between the 3 systems. I don't know what i want to do is possible or not. what i want to do:
1) connect the usb data card to Acer and share the internet connection using the inbuilt wireless card in the laptop so that the dell and imac can access it.
2) connecting the 2 ext. hard drive to Acer and sharing the files over the same connection( wireless connection used to share internet with other systems) so that i can access the files from my dell and imac. I want to mention that i don't have a router.

I have a wired lan at home with 2 XP boxes connecting to a router to a DSL modem. I want to network my laptop, running only fedora os, for file sharing, printing and internet access. I will be using the laptop probably exclusively for creating/maintaining a Drupal-based (LAMP) e-commerce site to replace our old one for our small family business.
Here's the background. 1x Windows Vista laptop (laptop1) 1x Windows 7 laptop (laptop2) 1x Mac laptop (laptop 3)
I am running Ubuntu server with 3 hard drives. I have Webmin installed. So far, I have the three laptops being able to connect to samba and accessing /home/insert_user_here. All laptop users have access to my /media/data2 (photographs, videos). That's all good. At first, I couldn't get other users but laptop 3 to access /media/sdb1, but I fixed that by changing permission to 755 so I guess everyone can access this. Atm, I want to only allow laptop #3 to connect to /media/sdd1 (be able to read/write/etc.) while laptop 1 and 2 can't even see the files. Also, laptop 1 and 2 can't seem to read and write through file share.
I am trying to set up a LAN with some basic file and printer sharing, as well as either a VPN or FTP server. I am setting up a server for an office with about 4 computers and one remote computer at a home office. I would like the server to back up a selected group of folders on all of the computers as well as share some printers between them all as well. If all of the other computers are windows computers will Ubuntu work for something like this? I would also like to host a website and e-mail server as well if the server is not loaded down too much. I know I can get windows server to work, but I would like to use something else if possible.
I'm going to be setting up our company with a in office server in the next few days. I wanted to use ubuntu as my servers OS but after reading some of the documentations I come to realize there is no X server in the server OS. I am OK with doing everything in terminal but would prefer to do some things in a graphic interface. Am I able to install the Xfree86 and be able to configure some stuff through that? Also the machine I am building for the server is not a true server machine just a really fast computer with lots of memory and space. The specs are a 3.1 AMD 64bit processor, 16gig ram, 2x 1TB hdd 7200rpm sata.
If the X server isn't a possibility on the server OS, I have read you can install all the server repositories on the Desktop Editions. Would that be a better option for me? Here is what I would like the server to do. I am going to be running quick books on the server with 1 workstation that is dedicated to it. We have 3 workstations and 3 users. We also would like to implement a Shared filing system and print server. Eventually when our current contract with our web host expires we would like to migrate the base website (not the ecom side) to this server.
I've been able to make my server connect to my clients but not able to share the internet connection. I've been searching around but haven't come across an answer yet. i would like to setup one of my old pcs as a file server and internet gateway; we are living in a large building shared with 40 others. the ubuntu box would be the one connected to the internet via ethernet and sharing connexion via wifi. i haven't started yet - presently, i am doing the ground work and reading before to start i understand sharing the internet is relatively simple and can be done from the GUI
What we would like is slightly like BT Fon or BT Open Zone in the UK: you can hook on a free network but in order to access outside (internet: email, web, ftp, etc) you need to login login would help us monitor fair usage. I imagine something with username and password for each user would do: as we are a few in the same building not everyone is actually paying for the connection and we don't want to end up with rather large excess bills. So the ones who are paying access both files and internet; those who dont just have access to the files on the local server.
Do i need Ubuntu server to set this up? What hardware would be ideal - given we are all far from rich but willing to have a nice setup

How do I tell the shared connection that it has a static IP and that I dont want a DHCP on the network?Do I have to set up DHCP on the box with the shared connection, even if that box only runs DHCP for a single IP address being the eth0 that is shared?Or can I tell the shared connection that it has a static IP and still allow network manager to run the shared connection?Or should I specify static IP's for all clients and the shared network manager and install say firestarter on the gateway to run the NAT for the eth0 out to eth1.
Is there a way to synchronize the address book in Outlook when the user works on multiple windows computer, and the server in the internal network runs under Linux ?
I have a CentOS + Samba server and Windows XP client machines. Users, passwords and permissions are entered on the server machine.users and passwords ( same as on the server ) are entered in the XP client machine.When attempting to access a public file on the server using a XP client machine and the IP address of my server, I am asked a user name and password and none of the already entered seem to work. I cannot access the server file (prompted again and again to enter user name and password). What did i miss
i am able to set up samba server with adc it is working properly. also i set the GID and stikki bit permission in sharing so i can set only crater can delete the files. But i want some users have ability to delete permission for all files and folders in that sharing
Quite often I need someone to transfer a file to my laptop, and it's often different OS to different OS, and setting file-sharing, sshd/ssh, ftpd/ftp, and whatever else not is often not worth it. A USB key is also not always handy or big enough.
But, it's easy to be on the same network, just hard to get service working on top of it in less than 3 minutes if you've never dealt with that person's computer before.
What I was thinking would be the simplest thing would be if I could run apache, and have a very simple web script that simply allows file uploads. Something that would serve a web page that has a "choose file" button which brings up the file dialog, pretty standard I guess. I wouldn't say no to a few more functions on top of that.
Given that, does anyone know of a simple apache modules, or a web server script (language doesn't matter) that would allow for this?
How to configure File Sharing server which will be in the same network along with Windows DNS servers and others.Googling showed me that "Samba server" will do the job of file sharing . Okay samba server is configured on Ubuntu Linux machine but how to add this to the existing domain where windows machines are ? Do i have to really add this Samba server to windows Active directory or adding it in the network will do? Please also help me in configuring samba server security and the ease of user access of the data on the server.
