General :: How To Create Disk Image Of Actual Data
Nov 15, 2010Suppose I have a 80 GB hard disk (sda) with 4GB of contents. Using a dd to copy to a different disk

dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb
copies all the contents (including free space). So sdb also needs to be 80GB.
You will notice that in VMWare or VirtualBox disk images, it is possible to set the disk to use only the amount of space of actual data. So a 80GB virtualbox/vmware image with 4GB of contents will be 4GB.
Is it possible to do that with an actual hard disk (sda) image? I want to create an image of an actual hard disk, copy it to DVD and transport it (in mail) for restoration on another computer (having same hard disk).

Jun 13, 2011At the Get Slackware page at the Slackware website it gives a list of addresses which when I click one of the addresses it redirects to another page with a list of mirror images. Which address and which mirror image do I need to work with Kubuntu 11.04 on my netbook so I can create a USB startup disk? With my connection speed these mirror image downloads take about an hour and a half and I cannot just be guessing which mirror image to download.

Cannot open SCSI driver.

cdrecord: for possible transport specifirs try 'cdrecord dev=help'.
i am inserting blank CD in the cdrom.
then i run cdrecord -v -eject speed=16 dev=ATA:1,0,0 myimage.iso
how will i come to know about dev and version information if cdrecord --scanbus is failing above.
i am having laptop. with rhel5 (2.6.18-194.el5)
Ubuntu :: How To Create Disk Image And Uninstall Drivers
Aug 27, 2010Basically, I want to be able to create the perfect disk image of a CLEAN Ubuntu installed in a 30 gb partition. The problem is, if I install Ubuntu, then some drivers are installed automatically. I am using an old computer at the moment (my main is back at home) and I want to be able to create an image so that when I restore that image onto my main computer, it is not cluttered with drivers of the old computer. Is there a method that can be used for uninstalling drivers?
I am looking for the cleanest way to uninstall drivers, hopefully to the point where it will not leave any "residue" That is my first question. My second question (in general about disk image--I have never actually created nor restored an image): Can I create an image of partition A and restore the image on partition B? Basically, creating an image of one partition and restoring it on another partition. Or does it have to be restored on the original partition?
Also, what if it is the same scenario but partition B is a larger size? I know that if partition B is smaller, it cannot be done because the image is larger than the partition. Finally, can partition A be restored onto a different hard drive? I have yet to find answers of these questions on different forums in other sites (this is my 3rd try). I know that the Ubuntu community is extremely active and more than willing to share their knowledge.

Sep 3, 2010I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 WS on my PC but it did not see any disks to install on. I believe this is because my drives are all configured as RAID. My mobo is an Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI AM2+ socket with an Athlon 2X 5000+ CPU. The chipset is AMD 780G. I have the BIOS configured for RAID drives and I already run Win XP x32 and Win 7 x64 on it. My boot drive is configured as 'RAID READY' and I have 2 RAID 1 disks consisting of pairs of SATA drives.
From what I have researched it seems that with some tuning it should be possible to install Ubuntu 10.04 but I have little Linux experience and don't want to mess up my existing drives. I have installed Linux before a few times and run it but never with RAID. Is anyone aware of an existing disk image that I will be able to install from on my system or would it be possible for someone to create one for me to use?
Software :: Boot From A Image Transferred To Internal Hard Disk?
Jul 20, 2010I have a dvd I want to boot from, on a certain laptop. The problem is this:
DVD will NOT boot in laptop [1] with this DVD.
DVD WILL boot ok in laptop [2] with this DVD.
- Conclusion, DVD is ok.
* laptop [1] and laptop [2] boots other media in the cd/dvd drive ok.
I can see all files on DVD in both laptops. As a workaround I copied the DVD image off the DVD drive to internal hard disk with following command and the result was as follows:

# dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/sda4

How do I make that partition [/dev/sda4] bootable ?

We need the disk to first wipe the hard disk in the notebook, then perform a hardware test(testing processor/hdd/ram/display) then it should reimage the machine and reboot from the HDD.
I am thinking of using grub4dos to boot(and timeout to the HDD)
and partition image to image the HDD... but i do not know any cli software for the others...
For note the disk has to be completely automated as we don't have the headcount to recheck every machine every few minutes.

Apr 21, 2010I have a Samsung N110 running Windows 7 and I would like to install Ubuntu Netbook remix which I downloaded from [URL] I want to install it on the netbook in lieu of Windows so am not looking for a Live CD/USB option. I have run usb-creator.exe on my XP machine but no matter what I do I can't get the "make startup disk" to un-grey. I have selected the CD which contains the iso I unpacked, and it detects my USB drive (I:) which is 4Gb I had exactly the same problem at work when trying this with the .iso I downloaded so it isn't specific to this machine.

Jun 14, 2011I've performed a clean install of Linux on my system, and would like to create a snapshot of my whole disk so that I can go back to a fresh state immediately.
I used to use DriveImage XML and it was a FANTASTIC program, but unfortunately the boot CD containing it can only be created by having Windows installed. So it might be time to explore a new program that is equally simple and effective as that one.
I'd like your recommendations of imaging programs that are free, and that work off a boot CD/DVD (because the live backup thing generally takes much longer for imaging an entire disk).
One thing I liked about DriveImage XML was that it stored the backup in a fairly readable format, so if one day DriveImage XML were no longer available you wouldn't lose your backed up data. Any such programs?
Also, would these programs work for a drive that contains an encrypted root partition (i.e. enabling the encryption checkbox in the CentOS installation)?
