Occasionally after trying a few things, grub or linux won't load right. I've done some research on possible tools to help but I was wondering if any of the more experienced users had some recommendations for boot disk or tools to help repair grub and/or linux desktop/server editions.
p.s. I would also be interested in any fun and interesting tools, programs, and/or repository's that other users have found beneficial.
I did it long time with LFS but I don't remember how. the "root" option of the kernel in grub except only the partition. How do I set the "root" as a directory in a partition?

I have one Windows XP & 2 Linux installation in my disk.
I tried to restore grub using "setup (...)" command.but same error repeats.
Even I cant restore Windows XP using "fxmbr" command in... recovery console .
But I can boot from that drive by "chainloader" command in grub. code...
Running above command in grub terminal boots my hard disk ("hd1" is my "unbootable disk")
I have a problem with a VM running Centos 5.3 on a Centos 5.2 hypervisor. Any kernel install makes the system unbootable and I have to copy an old /boot directory to get it to boot again. After some investigation I found that grub was always failing. These are the partitions I have. xvda is the OS virtual drive. xvda1 is the /boot partitition and xvda2 is the LVM partition. A standard default install.

I hope I'm wording this issue clearly.I'd like to plug a disk (IDE or SATA) into an adapter that lets me plug it into my workstation via USB. (E.g. N82E16817153071 at newegg) It will show up as /dev/sdX where X is some arbitrary letter depending on what other disks the system happens to have.
I'd like to have a script then partition, format and copy files onto it. Then we need to install GRUB on it.
Then I will remove the disk and install it permanently into a different computer, here it will either be /dev/hda (if IDE) or /dev/sda (if SATA). However, it seems that in general when you install GRUB on a disk, it assumes it is going to be the same disk that boots??
I am first trying an IDE disk so it will be /dev/hda. I get a "GRUB Hard Disk Error" when booting it as /dev/hda rather than whetever it was on the USB adapter. I used this to install grub:
grub-install --root-directory /mnt/removable/ /dev/sdX Where X was the appropriate letter based on the USB adapter. Then I fixed /mnt/removable/boot/grub/device.map to use /dev/hda../dev/hdc instead of sda..sdc.
I haven't found much about this specific scenario I have so far on the web. I am guessing that stage1 is either attempting to find files based on what the original workstations primary disk geometry was, or it's assuming that the disk is the same location as it was when it was a "removable" one (i.e. /dev/sdX or (hd5) or whatever, when it should just be looking at (hd0).
The goal is to do this kind of installation easily and quickly, and not have to do it individually on each final computer via install CDROM or whatever, or reboot the workstation each time in order to attach the disk as the same location there, etc. (This is a manufacturing setting).
Is there a way to re-install grub on the master boot record of a hard disk using a live cd?If so will i have to configure it?I'm trying to install a linux distro on my ao751h(with poulsbo ) but i after installing it i can't boot.I get an error 15 or a flashing underscore.I have already tried ubuntu,debian,mint and slackware(LILO isn't compatible with poulsbo).Also,does anybody experience problems with the ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 installers or is it only me?when i choose the language and keyboard settings the installation stop as it is and i get a crash report.

I was wondering if it is possible to use the Live CD and then do the restore through Ubuntu. I know it's probably a long shot but thought I'd ask anyway.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 WS on my PC but it did not see any disks to install on. I believe this is because my drives are all configured as RAID. My mobo is an Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI AM2+ socket with an Athlon 2X 5000+ CPU. The chipset is AMD 780G. I have the BIOS configured for RAID drives and I already run Win XP x32 and Win 7 x64 on it. My boot drive is configured as 'RAID READY' and I have 2 RAID 1 disks consisting of pairs of SATA drives.
From what I have researched it seems that with some tuning it should be possible to install Ubuntu 10.04 but I have little Linux experience and don't want to mess up my existing drives. I have installed Linux before a few times and run it but never with RAID. Is anyone aware of an existing disk image that I will be able to install from on my system or would it be possible for someone to create one for me to use?
I have a dvd I want to boot from, on a certain laptop. The problem is this:
DVD will NOT boot in laptop [1] with this DVD.
DVD WILL boot ok in laptop [2] with this DVD.
- Conclusion, DVD is ok.
* laptop [1] and laptop [2] boots other media in the cd/dvd drive ok.
I can see all files on DVD in both laptops. As a workaround I copied the DVD image off the DVD drive to internal hard disk with following command and the result was as follows:

Trying to install iso disk image of vers 10.10. does not seem to want to load from boot. used alcohol 120 for burn,which is usually very reliable.But install seems to stall early into load.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've spent a good part of the day wrestling with replacing the grub background image. I did my homework and over the past few days read every thread and suggested link I could find on this forum. I had a clear idea of what needed to be done. Spacefun had quite a laugh at my expense! It was not fun at all. First, I put images in /usr/share/images/desktop-base and made changes in /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme to point to the image I wanted to use. Yes, I updated grub but spacefun had some sort of deathgrip on the setting.
So I threw an image in /boot/grub. Well, Grub found that and spacefun was gone but there was no background image when it booted - only a black background! At this point, I just surrendered and replaced spacefun-grub.png with the image I wanted and it finally worked. There are links in /usr/share/images/desktop-base/ that point to /etc/alternatives/ which in turn point back to the original file in /usr/share/images/desktop-base/ which I think may be the root of the problem but I didn't just want to start deleting links willy-nilly. Does anyone think that might just set things straight? This whole process is several steps backwards in customizing ability from what it was with grub and GDM a few years ago. This is NOT progress!
I have a Knoppix DVD-ROM. I also have its image as k.iso at the second partition of HDD of my laptop. I use the DVD-ROM and write at the boot prompt the cheat code:
knoppix bootfrom=/dev/sda5/k.iso
I also have a folder Knoppix made during bootprompt by using the cheatcode knoppix tohd=/dev/sda5 and I can use the following cheatcode while booting from the DVD-ROM, like knoppix fromhd=/dev/sda5My laptop runs Debian Lenny 5.0.4, installed in the first partition of my HDD.
Can Grub be configured to boot from the Knoppix k.iso image, or the knoppix folder, which I use to use the Knoppix OS, so that I am freed from using the DVD, when I want to use the knoppix system?

I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently performed a reinstall of ubuntu after mucking up my partitions, and I am running it dual booted with windows 7.
I recently performed a grub-pc update, but I didn't know what it was asking me to do during the process itself of updating the process.
It asked me at one point where to install grub, and I selected all my partitions because it suggested that if I didn't know. I think that may have damaged my windows section, which was also selection.

In light of my previous achievement in wireless networking, I've decided to create a larger issue for myself to solve. Which hopefully I can get some help with. Because my system is totally kisspoped up, for those of you who get what that means. I was trying to install GRUB via the .txz package and it created a mirrored image of the /boot folder. Which for some reason contained the / folder. Which in turn held /boot and all the other folders / is expected to contain.
Now, trying to remove the extra /boot folder proved difficult, but once I finally was able to figure it out, I remembered I could removepkg and that would probably mend the situation. However, I was already 20-something percent through moving the files to trash. Now when I checked /, /boot was gone from there. Along with various other folders. SO! Apparently the /tmp/boot folder created was in reality the /boot folder, albeit in the wrong place and having the wrong contents. Somehow, one folder existed as two different versions of itself at the same point in time. Much as a Time Lord might. Deleting one made the other vanish with it.
Good news:I removed it via Thunar and it should be in the root user's trash /home and some other folders had yet to be trashed when I hit cancel, so I can still use some things Bad news:I never ran X as root, so I don't know if it HAS a trash folder I can only use things already started up because the binaries are gone, but the configuration files in /home are still there (although /usr/bin remains)
Ideally, there would be a big UNDO button somewhere in this long row of function keys. Reasonably, there should be some kind of restoration tool. Realistically, I think I'm going to have to reinstall the system, which wasn't easy in the first place due to my faulty disc bay which detects discs at will.

I'm more than a little confused by this. A little while back I had to reinstall my machine because I had a hard disk failure and I replaced my primary drive.Everything went perfectly smoothly, but then a couple of weeks after that when I rebooted, it dumped my into the grub rescue console
