I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my new laptop. Everything seems to be running smoothly with the exception of the networking department.My computer is a Toshiba Qosmio X505 with a 8192 Realtek Wireless card built in (I think its called MiniPCI or something)If you need any more information, let me know the terminal commands and I'll get it right away.
View 1 RepliesI am a newbie trying to setup wifi using 9.10 on a compaq nx9010 . The driver is activated for the broadcom 4320 rev 2 chipset. the wifi light is on.I can connect to my neighbors's unsecured network, but not mine which is using personal WPA2 security.
I am using a lynksys Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160Nv2 I have installed WICD and removed the gnome network manager WICD tries to validate authentication which fails. then it tries to obtain an ip address which fails. finally it says: CONNECTION FAILED: UNABLE TO GET IP ADDRESS". meanwhile it is showing the wireless network at 100% signal.
last nite tried changing wifi channel, changing to WEP, installed and tried WPASUPPLICANT and WPA_GUI. Unfortunately , nothing worked. The wifi controller was able to assosciate with the network but could not authenticate. I'm wondering if the passphrase that I type in on the computer is somehow being turned into a hexidecimal or something so that it does not match what the router has as the pass phrase.
Is there a tutorial for how to set up a wifi connection for complete newbies to openSUSE? My laptop sees other routers, but won't let me connect to mine. I set WEP, HEX, type in the key, and then nothing happens. On the list it says this is unsecured, even though I have selected WEP.

I have a wireless network (192.168.1.0) that's bridged to the Internet and a wired one (192.168.0.0) that's only local. When I am connected to both networks, Natty wants to route my Internet traffic through the wired, local-only one.
Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?
I have a new Acer Aspire One, model D250-1958. It uses the Atheros AR928X. I've tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, as well as the conventional Ubuntu. Everything works beautifully, except no wireless. The netbook picks up the signal, but when I provide the Key it fails to connect, and eventually prompts me for the key again.
I've tried to research this on my own, but haven't found a solution. In particular, the solution reported by narnie for his Acer Aspire One D250-1584, <HERE>, didn't work for me.
I'd really like to get this working. The netbook will be much less useful if it can't make use of our wireless router.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to put a script of mine in the applications menu , so that when I click on it , it executes itself ...so I created a new application by the name myapplication.desktop in /usr/share/applications/ . But when in GUI mode I traverse down to this directory and click on myapplication.desktop . It gives me an error "myapplication.desktop is not a directory". The crazy part is that when I run it using the terminal freedom@freedom-laptop: /usr/share/applications$ myapplication it runs perfectly well. I can't understand the problem...the script is correct , but I don't know about the error saying "it is not a directory" as all the other files in there are also files and they do run even in graphical mode .

My laptop has an internal wireless device and a button to turn it on/off, but since it has bad reception I use an external USB wireless adapter.The problem is that if I turn the internal wireless device off using the button, it also turns the USB wireless adapter off.Is there anyway to use the killswitch (the button) only for the internal wireless device?This only started to happen in Ubuntu 10.04.

Installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot with win7 yesterday. Everything working but Wifi. Wifi works fine with Win7. No Wifi in Ubuntu. Very confused. I have info from the wifi trouble ticket post.There does not seem to be a driver for this card anywhere.

I'm using wifi card to connect to wifi network (internet) and i'm planing to share this wifi/internet connection via ethernet to wireless router (siemens sx763) so i can have internet on my other devices, e.g. mobile phone, laptop.
I am running (K)Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 64bit on a Dell Latitude E6400, WiFi Card Intel 5100. Never had any problems with networking. Up to about 2 weeks ago. I do realize there have been quite a few posts with this network adaptor, but non really described the problem I have here.
What happens is that suddenly the WiFi LED on the computer stops blinking, the WiFi connection gets disrupted, and the device is not recognized anymore when checking ifconfig. Only cold restarting the machine helps then... it will work for a while (between 1 and 20 minutes) and then crash again.
On Windows 7 the card works perfectly fine. With Ubuntu 11.04 in Live CD mode I have the same effects (connection crashes after a while). Also tried booting an older kernel, no success.

New install of 11.2 with KDE 4.I have two soundcards in my system, one on the motherboard and a soundblaster. I multiboot and all FIVE other images, including SUSE 10.1 with KDE 3, use the soundblaster so that is where the speakers are plugged in. 11.2 insists on configuring the motherboard sound card for KDE, even when I do a fresh install setting the soundblaster as the primary sound card at installation time or when I remove the motherboard sound card from the configuration after installation. KDE 4 never even lists the soundblaster as a known card. Any way to fix or work around this restriction?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running OpenSuSE 11.2 with an Nvidia GeForce 8200 on board graphics card and am running the drivers installed from the file NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run which I obtained from the Nvidia web site. I also have this vga directive on the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst vga=0x346 Yet, sometimes when the system starts up it will go into 640x480 mode instead of 1680x1050. If I shutdown and restart a few times it will eventually come up in the proper resolution.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue installing Ubuntu with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit through Wubi. The Wubi installation works great and Ubuntu seems to install after the first reboot after selecting Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu, however whenever I select Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu after Ubuntu installs and it reboots for the second time, it loads the GRUB bootloader, however Ubuntu isn't listed at all.
Windows 7 is listed twice and Windows Vista is listed (seems it picks up the recovery partition for Windows 7 as Vista) and when I select the first Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it just goes back to Windows' boot menu with Windows 7 and Ubuntu as the selections. If I select the second Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it'll boot Windows 7 like normally. It looks like Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Because of that, I just ended up uninstalling it.
Installing a F12 on a new 500gb SCSI disk.I had a previous SEPARATE disk with a stable F9 on it including its OWN SWAP space.After installing F12 to boot from the new disk it installed. When rebooted crashed with an Fdisk type problem ... Even though the entire O.S. was supposed to be separately installed on SCSI 500.. After many frustrating hours of why oh why? it appears as though the F12 installation by default grabs any allocated "SWAP" space on any allocated DISK.As an other O.S. had used that SWAP for itself (Which it has every right to do) Why then did F12 pick it up?? and Use it in /etc/fstab...Then crash as a result??
Removing the offending "SWAP" entry from /etc/fstab install solved the problem.But my question remains ?? Why Does F12 install pick up "foreign SWAP space"?
I just set up a Squeeze server for a friend of mine using my exact apache2 settings. He has been playing around, having a bit of fun learning HTML, but he ran into a problem where one of his images would not display.
