Is there a tutorial for how to set up a wifi connection for complete newbies to openSUSE? My laptop sees other routers, but won't let me connect to mine. I set WEP, HEX, type in the key, and then nothing happens. On the list it says this is unsecured, even though I have selected WEP.

I can connect to unsecure routers, but not to any secure routers. NetworkManager doesn't seem to work and neither does anything else I try. I have tried with WPA supplicant but to be honest I have not a clue what to do. I have an Atheros ar5009 card and I'm currently using the ath9k module. Lan works just fine. But my wireless doesn't.

I have updated everything it seems like, but nothing I do seems to work. I have been at this for almost 3 weeks already hoping for a break and so far nothing.
I am a newbie trying to setup wifi using 9.10 on a compaq nx9010 . The driver is activated for the broadcom 4320 rev 2 chipset. the wifi light is on.I can connect to my neighbors's unsecured network, but not mine which is using personal WPA2 security.
I am using a lynksys Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160Nv2 I have installed WICD and removed the gnome network manager WICD tries to validate authentication which fails. then it tries to obtain an ip address which fails. finally it says: CONNECTION FAILED: UNABLE TO GET IP ADDRESS". meanwhile it is showing the wireless network at 100% signal.
last nite tried changing wifi channel, changing to WEP, installed and tried WPASUPPLICANT and WPA_GUI. Unfortunately , nothing worked. The wifi controller was able to assosciate with the network but could not authenticate. I'm wondering if the passphrase that I type in on the computer is somehow being turned into a hexidecimal or something so that it does not match what the router has as the pass phrase.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my new laptop. Everything seems to be running smoothly with the exception of the networking department.My computer is a Toshiba Qosmio X505 with a 8192 Realtek Wireless card built in (I think its called MiniPCI or something)If you need any more information, let me know the terminal commands and I'll get it right away.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently got a lenovo w510 laptop and I installed openSUSE 11.3 KDE on it. the wireless works fine at home (802.11g WPA2) when I go to work I have tried to set up the wifi for the 802.1X PEAP network but it doesn't look like it even tries to connect.
The work network set up is as follows. non-brodcasting SSID (do I need to tell network manager of this? I manually enter the SSID no problem)

I have verified my username and pw several times, as well as the SSID. Just yesterday I helped a co-worker get on the network under ubuntu and it worked like a charm.
The Hardware profile displays the wifi card as a "WiFi Link 6000 Series" It is an intel card.
I can connect to the internet through wifi, but I cannot connect to anything on my network. I have a printer and a NAS, so I would really like for this to work again. I have a dell laptop with a Broadcom card.

To solve this I need to disable and re-enable wireless until it automatically connects. I know this isn't exactly a major problem, it's just getting pretty annoying. I'm using Fedora 11 btw.

I installed Kubuntu 11.04, and it's really difficult. I located my wireless network, and after putting in my WEP key, it just says " Setting Network Address", while prompting me to re-enter my WEP/Hex key. After repeatedly entering the password, I get a red circle/slash icon in lieu of the network icon.
I need to know what is BSSID.. I want to connet it but I have problems with this...? Where I should to find that code..? or what is it...?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for 2 days and there's one problem left to solve. It cannot connect to my home encrypted wifi but it has no problem connecting to open wifi. I used this site [URL] to change my wifipassword but it still doesn't work. Interestingly my Windows partition connects to it without any change so I don't even know if I'm really changing the password. The router is a Linksys WRT54G2. How can I change the wifi password, know what it is, and make sure Ubuntu knows how to connect to it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo recently we switched Internet Providers. While we had Bellsouth, my laptop would connect to our wireless internet flawlessly everytime. However, we just switched to Charter because it was both cheaper and faster. But now, my laptop will not connect to our wireless. If I hook it up to an Ethernet cord, it connects just fine. I believe they gave us a new modem/router or whatever it is that sends out the wifi signal.
I have tried to connect with this laptop on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Backtrack 4. On Ubuntu and Linux Mint, after I enter the correct WEP key, it sits there and tried to connect for a minute or two, but then the window pops up asking for the WEP key again, even though it's still filled out.
When I tried connecting on Backtrack, it told me that it could not obtain an IP address.
about 90 percent of the time, i cannot connect to the internet. i click on the icon and select the network, but for some reason, instead of saying, "connection established", it says, "you are now disconnected."

I have a Fedora Box with chillispot loaded for a captive protal wifi network. I am needing my office lan to connect to a controller on the WIFI network. I have tried many different firewall rules and have only momentarly able to ping something on the other network. here's some configuration info and my firewall rules that I thought should work.

I just installed my Ubuntu 11.04 alongside with my Windows 7. The only problem I have with my Ubuntu is that it cannot seem to find or connect to any routers. I think it COULD be the drivers that are missing. When I try to use the router I have at home with my Windows 7, (on the same laptop) it works fine. I use a Airport Extreme router.

I just installed Fedora 13 64bit Gnome, but I can't connect to the internet for some odd reason.

I have marked the network icon, but on my desktop I don't have that icon for some reason...
Since I'm new @ Linux(Picking it up again) I went to the services and checked 2 services:
The network manager service was running but the status said: This service is dead.
And the network service was also running but status was: The status of this service is unknown.
I also went to the Administration menu and checked Network, the first tab showed no devices, but when I went to the hardware tab it did show my card.
I also don't believe that this is hardware problem since the card worked just fine under Fedora 9 or 10(Don't remember).
So if anyone got some solutions for me it would be great...

I just installed ubuntu server, and I need to use a usb wifi thingy for it, but it refuses to connect. The computer recognizes the wifi, and I can even do "sudo iwlist scan" and see my wifi network, but I can't figure out how to connect.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi was fed up after i can't connect to wifi using ubuntu. the problem happened after my router is being replaced to a new one because the old one got struck by lightning. good thing i dual-boot my laptop so i can access the internet using Windows 7 now.
i use the default network manager to connect to wifi before, but it all seem to be failed after the replacement of router. i also used Wicd but it failed to connect either. it says in the notification "disconnected: bad password" but the password was right. my wifi used WEP password with open authentication.
i even remove the WEP password and try to connect, but it failed. all i can do is to boot in windows 7 and surf internet there. what could cause this problem? is it the router, the telephone line? i can set the router settings if i want, but i don't know what causes the problem.

I have so many _wired_ devices that I can't get by with just 4 eth cable outlets anymore, so I thought I'd hook up an older router that I don't use as a way to get extra places to plug devices into.
Now it looks like:

then cable modem
then router1/wifi + (1 eth NAT storage)
then router2 + 4 eth0 computers:
(legacy FC5 box)
(legacy F11 box)
(updated F13 box)
(windoze)
All of the computers EXCEPT the FC5 box are fine (my def of "fine" is I can ssh to and from the other computers and to outside computers, and browse the web).
The FC5 box, however, can ssh to and from computers inside the network just fine, but can't get any kind of web browsing. Nor can it ping to the outside. I get a "Network is unreachable" error. I'm not using a proxy, not knowingly, and my firewall settings haven't changed...it certainly hasn't been blocking port 80 before.
what's the best way to go about adding more ethernet when you need about 7 cables. I'm not really excited to buy a router with 8 ports or anything like that, especially when this seems to _almost_ be working just fine.
Im trying to connect to my wireless network via terminal. My wifi network has a WPA2 encription. Im running ubuntu server 10.04. wifi interfaces are active, i can "see" my network with airodump. The only thing is i dont really know how to configure my iwconfig to connect to it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got my netbook in the mail yesterday, opened it up, logged in, and Windows 7 was installed. Being a Windows hater my whole life, I followed a friend's advice and downloaded Ubuntu netbook, made a USB drive, changed the BIOS settings, all that. Here's when the stupidity occurs--I decided to go ahead and install Ubuntu without trying it, and to delete Windows to do so. A couple minutes later I realized that was a really, really stupid idea, so in a panic I turned my netbook off. I turned it back on and it was still on install but not really moving, so I powered off and on again and went back to the "Try Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu" choice screen. I chose "Try Ubuntu" and found that it did not recognize my home wifi network or ask me to join--or any wifi network, for that matter.
Now, it did recognize my wifi network the few minutes I spent on Windows 7, so I tried to change the BIOS settings back to where I could just use that until I figured out the problem. But no matter which setting I tried (HDD/SDD just gives me a black screen, and FDD and LAN do the same as the USB drive), I can't get back to Windows, so I guess I did delete it. Which leaves me with a netbook that can only connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Which kind of defeats the purpose.
Questions I should answer:
1. How am I trying to get online? My home's wireless network. We have a router. All the other laptops in the house connect fine.
2. Who is my internet service provider (and in which country?) COX, United States.
3. Can you get online with any other method? Yes, the internet works fine with an ethernet cable.
4. How am I getting online to post in this forum? My parent's laptop.
5. What hardware are you using? Toshiba N505 netbook and a router. I can give more information about the router if you need it, but I doubt it's the program since the other laptops are fine.
Give me one moment and I will add some code that it gives me when I put in the commands this website tells me to.My two final questions are:
1. Is there any way to recover Windows without buying it again?
2. How can I get Ubuntu to connect to my home wifi network?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI know Windows forward and backward but I am so new to linux it's just wrong. I just installed fedora (like 1hr ago) on and old toshiba laptop with a WiFi PC card. Everything seems to work fine except. My Networks connects to my home Wifi network but it will not connect to internet. When it connects the IP address isn't even close to being in the same range as my other laptops and PCs. Like I said I'm new to linux but I'm wanting to learn. Any fixes for this issue? Which linus book is the best one to read for a beginner? Other then not connecting to internet I have no complaints.

So now I am having problems getting wifi to work in 10.10. In Network Manager I can view wifi networks fine but I cannot connect. I tried with wicd also but I got as far as "getting ip" and then it would hang up.

I am not sure what driver I am using as I don't know how to exactly ID my driver. I know there is a way to ID the driver using airodump-ng but I have yet to find it.
I have a feeling this is a driver issue as one time I was able to establish a connection that then dropped a few minutes later. I have a feeling I should be disabling/removing the current driver and replacing it with ipw3945 or possibly a driver ndiswrapped? The problem is I cannot figure out how to remove the current driver.
I was going to switch back to 9.04 but I thought I would try to manually figure this one out instead of taking the easy way.
