Well this might not be a newbie question, but I will park it here for now. Mint, a flavor of Ubuntu, boots up and picks up old OSes that are long gone. How can I stop or modify this?I have searched, and nothing seems to address this.
View 5 RepliesI'm having an issue installing Ubuntu with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit through Wubi. The Wubi installation works great and Ubuntu seems to install after the first reboot after selecting Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu, however whenever I select Ubuntu from Windows' boot menu after Ubuntu installs and it reboots for the second time, it loads the GRUB bootloader, however Ubuntu isn't listed at all.
Windows 7 is listed twice and Windows Vista is listed (seems it picks up the recovery partition for Windows 7 as Vista) and when I select the first Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it just goes back to Windows' boot menu with Windows 7 and Ubuntu as the selections. If I select the second Windows 7 from the GRUB bootloader, it'll boot Windows 7 like normally. It looks like Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Because of that, I just ended up uninstalling it.
I have Microsoft Windows Xp installed on my Primary Drive C: and I had a Mint boot disc that I would pop in and load from. Well I got tired of this disc and installed a new hard drive in my computer so I could use Mint as a secondary OS. Everything went good in the install, and I put Mint on the second drive. But when I boot my computer the GRUB menu only shows Linux Helena Mint 8 to load from and no Xp. Xp is still currently installed on the computer in the Primary drive, but how do I inlcude it in the GRUB boot menu or boot it at all?

i didn't installed the grub bootloader at time of opensuse installation as then i would be having grub and grub2 both

In the /boot/grub/ all the grub mod files show as music file type for Linux Mint 8. So is it really needed to correct this, and how to change this file type from some music application to the grub module file type association?

View 6 Replies View Relatedjust installed OpenSUSE this weekend and I already had two different OSs on the laptop. Windows 7 and Linux Mint 8 KDE CE. Well during installation Windows was automatically added to grub but Mint wasnt. And When I go to the bootloader tab, and I add a new image it asks me the kernel image and initial RAM disk. Well This is what is in the boot folder on the Mint Partition

grub (the grub installed on KDE... inactive)

When I installed 64 bit OpenSUSE Gnome 11.4 today on an ext4 primary partition (sda4) from the Install DVD, it eliminated LinuxMint 9's entry from OpenSUSE'sGrub The 64 bit LinuxMint v. 9 (Isadora) is installed on an ext4 logical partition (sda9) inside an extended partition, but it doesn't appear in OpenSUSE's Grub (and now OpenSUSE 11.4 won't connect to the Internet - although the Live CD ran yesterday without a hitch).
I'm hoping that my fellow OpenSUSE users can help me regain access to my Isadora installation and hopefully, point me to a solution for the Internet access problem.
After installing opensuse grub disappeared from the Linux Mint I want to boot into Linux Mint.

Just done a fresh install with helena on my sata drive and a dual boot with xp pro which is on my on my ide drive my problem is on boot I get to grub loading then boot hangs for 5 minutes before the dual boot screen appears and when it does I can not move up or down to select any options eventually however helena does start.

View 1 Replies View RelatedNew install of 11.2 with KDE 4.I have two soundcards in my system, one on the motherboard and a soundblaster. I multiboot and all FIVE other images, including SUSE 10.1 with KDE 3, use the soundblaster so that is where the speakers are plugged in. 11.2 insists on configuring the motherboard sound card for KDE, even when I do a fresh install setting the soundblaster as the primary sound card at installation time or when I remove the motherboard sound card from the configuration after installation. KDE 4 never even lists the soundblaster as a known card. Any way to fix or work around this restriction?

I'm running OpenSuSE 11.2 with an Nvidia GeForce 8200 on board graphics card and am running the drivers installed from the file NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run which I obtained from the Nvidia web site. I also have this vga directive on the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst vga=0x346 Yet, sometimes when the system starts up it will go into 640x480 mode instead of 1680x1050. If I shutdown and restart a few times it will eventually come up in the proper resolution.
View 4 Replies View RelatedInstalling a F12 on a new 500gb SCSI disk.I had a previous SEPARATE disk with a stable F9 on it including its OWN SWAP space.After installing F12 to boot from the new disk it installed. When rebooted crashed with an Fdisk type problem ... Even though the entire O.S. was supposed to be separately installed on SCSI 500.. After many frustrating hours of why oh why? it appears as though the F12 installation by default grabs any allocated "SWAP" space on any allocated DISK.As an other O.S. had used that SWAP for itself (Which it has every right to do) Why then did F12 pick it up?? and Use it in /etc/fstab...Then crash as a result??
Removing the offending "SWAP" entry from /etc/fstab install solved the problem.But my question remains ?? Why Does F12 install pick up "foreign SWAP space"?
I have a wireless network (192.168.1.0) that's bridged to the Internet and a wired one (192.168.0.0) that's only local. When I am connected to both networks, Natty wants to route my Internet traffic through the wired, local-only one.
Can I make it automatically "just work", so that the right network is chosen for Internet traffic? Otherwise, what's the workaround?
I have a new Acer Aspire One, model D250-1958. It uses the Atheros AR928X. I've tried Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04, as well as the conventional Ubuntu. Everything works beautifully, except no wireless. The netbook picks up the signal, but when I provide the Key it fails to connect, and eventually prompts me for the key again.
I've tried to research this on my own, but haven't found a solution. In particular, the solution reported by narnie for his Acer Aspire One D250-1584, <HERE>, didn't work for me.
I'd really like to get this working. The netbook will be much less useful if it can't make use of our wireless router.
my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

I have decided that I am going to install Linux Mint inplace of Ubuntu. The only thing I am worried about is: Will Mint give me the option of which partiton to put it on? I know this sounds stupid, but I am being very cautious about not deleting my files and Vista.

I just got Mint 10 DLed and I'm ready to install. I was reading around and saw that a Live USB can be done. Can anyone tell me how to do that? I also wanted to install it to a PC that isn't ready yet, but I a saw one could make a USB drive work like an OS disk. Can anyone help me with that also. All the years I've worked with PCs, I never installed an OS off a flashdrive.

I was disappointed to be prompted for a username and password after booting to the Live CD for mint 10. The user manual did not show this step. I searched for help on this but the two suggestions I found did not work. One told me to use mint as the username with a blank password. The other suggested using user and pass for these two fields.

I have a few questions before I do so. A.) Is all this reversible? B.) It will not affect my current system. When it asks you to create a hard drive, that is reversible, right? And it's only used when you are using VB? D.) About the hard drive you have to create.
