Networking :: Ubuntu Picks Up Cable Modem - Puppy Doesn't
Jan 3, 2010
Ubuntu and Xubuntu read my Motorola Surfboard SBV5120 cable modem via USB "out of the box"; Puppy LInux doesn't. The computer I've run them on doesn't support ethernet, so it has to be via USB. what can I do to get Puppy online?
Linux box could act as a router? I have one machine running ubuntu, another running windows 7, a cable modem and a switch. Is it posible to share the connection between both computers by making the linux box a "router"?
I am using ububntu 9.10,and have a cable modem internet connection. All I have is an ethernet cable given to me,and when plugged in a windows machine and fire a browser am redirected to default login page where i can login, but when i plug it into my linux machine,i cant get the same done. In network connections it doesnt shows my autoeth0, i have deleted my existing dsl settings(not autoeth0),made a new wired network,i doubt what should i put into MAC addrs field(i have put my machines mac given by lshw -c network.) What should I put in DHCP client id? Anyways when i click on network connections it says under my wired connections-device not configured properly.
I just got connected to Charter Cable Internet service a few days ago and I'm having a weird problem with my home network. Prior to this my network worked fine. On my network I have a desktop running Ubuntu 9.10/64 and Virtualbox with WinXP installed, an HTPC with Ubuntu 9.10/32 installed and a laptop dual booted with Ubuntu 9.10/32 and WinXP. The desktop and HTPC are hard wired to a wireless router and the laptop is wireless. The cable modem is hard wired to the router. I have samba installed and UFW is disabled. The problem is: with the cable modem turned off or on standby, all machines connect to each other and can transfer files, etc just fine but when I activate the cable modem all of the machines can connect to the Internet but the machines running Ubuntu can't connect to each other on the home network. If I boot the laptop into Windows, it can connect to the Linux machines just fine but if I boot it into Linux, it won't connect to the Linux machines but it can connect to the Internet and as far as the desktop, Ubuntu won't connect to the network but Windows running in the Virtualbox with bridged networking can connect to all of the machines.
I am writing a simple script which will transmit files over a serial connection. I have simplified the setup to test the solution, so the final configuration will be a bit more complicated.
Current setup: 1. 2 RS232 com ports connected with a null modem in between. 2. Open minicom on both 3. Put in 19200,8,N,1 as parameters 4. Open text travels both ways 5. Files sent over Zmodem transfer well.
Both serial adapters are USB, but I tried it also with real com ports, and same story. For simplicity, I will call one adapter "receiving" and the other "sending" to signify from which side I want to send the files through zmodem.
Then I close minicom on the "sending" site without reseting the port (I have also tried setting everything up with stty)
On sending site:
Code:
I tried googling but no solution helps. Please do not try to suggest to use minicom on both sides, because this is going to be an unattended process in the end.
How to transfer a file with zmodem using rz and sz without minicom.
I cannot connect my Dell Inspiron 1300 through the NetworkManager "wired" connection, when I try to go direct to the cable modem. It fails to connect.
If I connect the cable modem to my (linksys WRT54GS) wireless router, and then connect my laptop to a wired port in the router, it connects in seconds, successfully.
This has happened to me 2 other times, when I tried to connect my laptop to a client's cable modem, because my client did not have a wireless router available, in their home.
My wireless works fine. This has me perplexed. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and NetworkManager Applet 0.8
I've tried some things to see what is going on, such as "ifconfig" "dhclient" as well as modifying the "Auto eth0" parameters and adding my laptop's MAC address, etc. Results were no fix or solution. I feel like I'm headed down the wrong road. Would someone set me straight? I have a feeling this is simpler than I think.
Do I have to actually reset my own or someone's cable modem to get this to work? I don't want to do that unless there's no other way. Is there? Let me know what commands I can or should run.
i'm having problems connecting to the internet unless i manually enter the IP info.
automatic DHCP does not work. I'm on a dual boot machine vista/ubuntu 10.04 LTS connecting to the internet through a lynksys wireless g router and a cable modem.
Running 2.6.29-gentoo-r1 on a Sun Ultrasparc 10 with a Sun Happy Meal on eth0 connected directly to my cable modem. Intermittently, with a frequency between a few hours and a few days, I lose internet connectivity. Running ifconfig eth0 indicates all is well and I have a valid IP address but I cannot even ping the cable modem's management address; pings to 127.0.0.1 and eth0's IP address do get a reply but no other address I've tried does. I can 'fix' the problem by issuing
Code:
If I check the CM logs, it appears that it has rebooted itself prior to the loss of connectivity. The strange thing is that the incoming traffic doesn't seem to be affected by this, my PSAD log is full of incoming scans even during the periods when I can't connect to the net. I suspect this is an ISP problem (they own the CM);
Running Gentoo with kernel 2.6.29 on a Sparc Ultra 10. I'm having problems with my cable modem connection failing, so I've added a static route that enables me to log into the modem's diagnostics page at 192.168.100.1 when the connection drops; my /etc/conf.d/net looks like this (with the comment lines removed).
My broadband internet connection came with a Nokia-Seimens C2110 Adsl modem. Please help me connect the modem through USB cable as the ethernet card is used to connect my computer(Asus- P5RD2 VM motherboard) to a different computer on LAN. I am in a fix and have no clue how to proceed.
I've got Puppy Linux on a USB key, and yesterday, while I was on the internet with it, it hanged. I didn't know what to do, and I rebooted from the button (I now know what to do ). The problem is that, after rebooting, Puppy doesn't recognise the router. I've tried to apply the drivers that are on Puppy, but there aren't any compatible.
My router is a Xavi 7968 and my Network Card is:
NIC Fast Ethernet PCI Familia RTL 8139 from Realtek
(On Realtek's website, there isn't any driver linux-compatible)
I want to configure my ADSL but I don't know what should I do. Can you explain me How can I configure it?(I use fc10, ethernet cable <Asus Am608 ADSL modem)
I've recently bought a recycled computer for my office. The plan was to get an old cheap computer and use it to write LaTex documents but nothing else. However, I can't seem to get the thing to connect to the internet. I'm on a University network which has a funny setup but I don't think that's the problem. So here's the deal. I have tried this with 9.04, 10.04 and 10.10 and it hasn't worked. The computer recognizes the ethernet cable. If I issue the command "sudo mii-tool eth0" and get back "eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok". However, click on the networking logo on the top right, and click auto eth0, it tries to connect for about 30 seconds, then gives up. Unfortunately I'm pretty clueless when it comes to networking so I have no idea what to do to try to fix this.
For about the past month I have been having a very frustrating problem When I boot the system with the ethernet cable attached it acts as if the cable is unplugged even though the connection light is litWhen I boot the system with the ethernet cable disconnected and wait until it boots all the way to gnome and then plug in the cable everything works fine
I got a new cable modem so I could get rid of the one I've been leasing from the cable company. It is a Motorola sb6120. Everything is fine with the ISP, it's approved for operation on their network, the only hitch was I had to use my Windows laptop to run their activation software.
At any rate, with the new modem installed, I hop on my Linux box and go to work. I'm seeing some terrible delays in looking up names. When I look with firebug, all the dns lookups for new names are taking 15+ seconds. First I just think maybe the names aren't cached or something is weird for a minute and it will get better, but no. After several restarts and then a couple days persevering with the new cable modem, all DNS queries are still terribly slow (including zypper, mail client, web client).
Suddenly I remember an issue I was having with, I believe version 11.1 when I first installed it. For just the computer on my network with a fixed IP address, DNS resolution was slow like this and if I disabled IPv6 then all was well. I believe there was even a patch issued back then for gethostbyname() that was supposed to fix the issue? So, when I disable IPv6, DNS lookup is back to normal. The two Linux computers on my network had been working fine with IPv6 and the old modem, though, and the Windows box is still working fine even with the new modem.
I can disable IPv6 and make it fast again, but really why should I have to?
I have a CentOS system running. I want to get mail off it to my yahoo account.
I did a test mailx command and it goes out of the queue but never gets to my yahoo mail.
I am using a cable modem. I can go out to the Internet so I know I have a valid connection. I am guessing I need to set something up so the cable company will relay my mail for me.
I know i can pull pop mail down and sen it using my account.
Do I need to configure something in the sendmail.cf file to do this?
I just went into my email and say this ...patial msg included...
(reason: 553 5.7.1 [BL21] Connections will not be accepted from 98.249.136.1 9, because the ip is in Spamhaus's list; see [url])
I installed slackware 13.1 a couple of days ago. I am a complete linux newbie..I am able to connect to internet from windows using the USB cable of my modem..but this modem is not detected in linux..is there any option to make linux detect it?
I have a pentium 3, 1 GHz processor 256 RAM..and the info below i got from my terminal..

I have been testing with "Add a physical serial port in Polled Mode to a VM using a Null Modem cable".I have been using HP ILOM for a while and need u guys help with "can I Connect the null modem serial cable from server port to the desktop which act as a terminal through ilom?
I snaptic installed xmacro. I do not see it show up anywhere. Lost. I need a macro that can record keystrokes to reset my cable/router modem combo. I now use autohotkey. But I cannot virtual machine this, because it would need to raise up a ms windows explorer, something that cannot be done in a virtual machine on guest OS.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my new laptop. Everything seems to be running smoothly with the exception of the networking department. My computer is a Toshiba Qosmio X505 with a 8192 Realtek Wireless card built in (I think its called MiniPCI or something)If you need any more information, let me know the terminal commands and I'll get it right away.
Can Cat5e RJ45 connector crimper be used for Cat 6 connector because I heard cat 6 connector is different from cat 5e connector and also same question for cable tester can cat5e cable tester be used for cat 6 cable?
I have installed WvDial (apparently) but it has no icon or launcher to start it by default, how do i get it to run? I also need basic set up how to. I am running Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) and network manager doesn't seem to be able to use my modem to connect to the internet (set up wizard works, appears connected, but then I get page not found error). Hence I wish to use WvDial to try to connect instead.
I had started another thread about this but had a terrible subject line. Others may have this issue.Found the answer deep in the bowels of documentation. My question now is " did version 20 mess this up for everyone with dialup"?
Right now I am using some software to emulate a null modem serial cable on my Windows computer connected to itself. For development purposes I need to have a null modem connection to a linux computer from a windows host. Is there any method of doing this virtually?
