The computer is not assigned an IP/connected to the network after boot. It does not do so automagically after a few hours either. I'm required to do:

Code:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart A few times before I get a connection.
The hardware

Ubuntu Networking :: Upgrade To 10.04 Broke R8169-based Wired Ethernet - Working Only At 10Mbps

May 1, 2010

After upgrading from karmic to lucid yesterday made my RTL 8111 -network card die. It's integrated on Intel D510mo mini-itx board.

dmesg:

Code:

After some googling I found out a lot of forumposts about the same problem from year 2007, but the troubles seem to disappear on the newer versions and seem to be back now? With those posts I managed to get the link up by using ethtool by setting autoneg off and setting speed to be 10mbps and half duplex. Any other speed/duplex combination fails.

One suggestion I found was to install r8168-driver from Realtek instead of the r8169. It didn't help, result was very much the same.

I booted to 9.10 live-cd and there the network worked as intended (100Mbps, I dont have a gigabit switch)

I really wouldn't like to fall back to 9.10, but my file server is not very usable with 10mbps.

Fedora Networking :: Bridged Networking And NetworkManager - No Network Connection Because Network Isn't Managed

Mar 2, 2011

I have installed qemu/kvm and created a Bridged network connection which works just fine(Windows 7 VM won't work in NAT mode.)

But when I try to use NetworkManager it says that I have no network connection because the network isn't managed, (I set the settings in ifcfg-br0 and ifcfg-eth0 to be managed)

The real problem is that now I can't use my VPN connections (I have many) in NetworkManager.

Is there a way to have both of these pieces of functionality?

I am using FC14

Ubuntu Networking :: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 Network Card Randomly The Network Connection On The Server Will Stop Working?

Jan 29, 2011

I have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 network card on my server at work.Everything works fine for a few weeks, then randomly the network connection on the server will stop working. After it stops working, I will try to reconnect with the network manager, it shows a wired connection available, it shows the "connection in progress"animation, then the "connection disabled" icon.

I uninstalled the network manager and used manual configuration, but do you think the network manager was the issue? I can't have the server disconnecting randomly every few weeks with no way to know what the real problem is. Was there an issue with the network manager with 10.04?

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Connection: 'Work Offline' - "No Network Connection"

Oct 31, 2010

I have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.

The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:

eth0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 001:aa0:91:a7:51
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets: 0 errors: 0 dropped: 0 overruns: 0 carrier: 0
collisons: 0 txqueulen: 1000
RX bytes: 0 (0.0 B) TX bytes: 0 (0.0 B)
[Code]...

If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.

But Internet is unaccessible with traceroute returns"the host is unreachable" message.

If to disable the automatic start of the interface and start it manually with ifup wlan0, nothing changes: the interface still does not work after first start. This is very annoying because this laptop is use by a girl who cannot restart interface. She says she cannot do anything with it.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Network Connection At All

Feb 17, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed. Been using it no problem for months. I have a Belkin wireless USB. Worked fine. Until 8 days ago. Just stopped working. During troubleshooting I also discovered that the wired connection also does not work. Rebooted, checked settings, did all that. Nothing. I've plugged the network wire into another machine. It picked up IP via DHCP within seconds proving that it's not the network. I've tried everything that I can think of. What would cause the network within Ubuntu to just stop working? Wired and wireless. The only thing I can think of doing now is to reinstall Ubuntu.

OpenSUSE Network :: Huawei SmartAX MT810 Connection At Boot (arnet)

Feb 5, 2010

I was absolutely dazzled, but my wife made me drop it after 20 days of not being able to get an internet connection.

I thought of trying again after so long to see if things had become easier for every Argentina user who has a Huawei connection (more than half of the country).
Unfortunately not.

The problem is the following:

I have a Huawei SmartAX MT810 usb-modem/router. In order to establish a connection, I need to run the following commands AS ROOT (which is why I cannot use a simple kde autostart bash script)

Code:
modprobe br2684 ; br2684ctl -c 0 -b -a 0.33 ; ifconfig nas0 up ; pppd call adsl

What's more, these commands cannot be run before the modem is operational, since they will end with an error.

In other distros I used to place these commands in /etc/rc.local. I tried placing them in /etc/rc.d/boot.local , but with no success: they are executed before the modem is operational.

In my complete ignorance of all things computer-related I thought it would be a good idea to place a caveat before the execution of the commands:

Code:
READYorNOT=$(dmesg | grep "modem operational") ; while [ "$READYorNOT" = "" ] ; do echo "Modem not operational" ; done

As a result the whole boot sequence gets stuck until I hit ctrl-c.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Network Or Internet Connection When Using KDE

Jan 18, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the default setup (Gnome I think) and on my Gateway Notebook using a wireless connection. It appears to be working great and I can even see my Windows drives and network storage on my home office systems.I have also set it up to run my favorite Bible software on Windows running under VirtualBox. I then installed the KDE Desktop so that I can select either desktop when logging on.

However, once I am in the KDE desktop, I cannot connect to the internet. I have checked and double-checked and the wireless settings seem to be the same on both the Gnom and KDE Desktops but still no network or internet connection when using KDE. I might mention that I am using the 64 Bit version of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless Network Connection Now At All?

Mar 5, 2010

Hi - I am new to Linux and Ubuntu so I have no idea how to fix or problem solve unfortunately I installed Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch recently on this laptop and all was good. I connected to my WIFI network no problem. It's WPA PSK encrypted, DHCP enabled. I just set it up in Network Manager and it was all fine. Then after a few days I installed a printer and some packages and updates via synaptics. The network connection started dropping after 20 mins or so. Only a reboot would restore it - auto connects at first, runs fine till it drops then never will reconnect. I posted on here, someone gave me some lines to put in a config file. I tried that. I didn't seem to help much, problem remained. Yesterday I checked for updates and there were a whole bunch so I just installed them all. Now I cannot connect at all. I have deleted and recreated the connection in Network Manager but it doesn't help. It tries to establish a connection but never achieves it. I am connecting to the internet now on the same laptop booted into Windows, so all the hardware is fine.

Can anyone who knows about ubuntu networking help? Do I need to do a complete reinstall? Seems a bit much, but it worked when I initially installed the OS. I want to like Ubuntu, but something as basic as connecting to the internet is pretty vital so reluctantly having to start using Windows again...

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Connection Logging

Nov 10, 2010

Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to setup some form of network connection monitoring and logging? As Australia has CRAP broadband and ISP's utilize Peak & Off-Peak download limits I schedule downloads for my Off-Peak times. Well recently my connection drops out exactly when my off-peak time kicks in and requires my modem to be reset to re-establish my connection.

My ISP is denying they are doing this but I happens everyday now and is getting really frustrating. What I want to try and set up is some sort of monitoring to ping my ISP's default gateway so I can prove it drops at a specific time each day. I am sure there would be something I could configure in Ubuntu but I am a newbie to Ubuntu so don't really know how to achieve this.

Ubuntu Networking :: If Plug Into An Ethernet Network After Boot The Network Never Connects

Oct 5, 2010

I have a system running a very basic LTS install (10.04). Ubuntu has been setup with very little additional packages. No GUI. Once it's booted to a prompt for the first time I add the following packages,

cups cupsys ssh pi memtester nfs-common
aptitude safe-upgrade

At this time I don't have additional information on exactly what packages are installed. I did not perform the installs myself. I will update this thread when I get more details from my IT counterpart on how the system was setup.

This is used for a headless(no monitor, no keyboard) system running some custom applications.

Here are two problems.

1. If I plug into an ethernet network after I boot, the network never connects. I need to reboot with the network connected in order to get an IP. What is the service to "auto connect" to a network?

2. I have a network printer configured on lpd called myprinter. If I am connected to the network when I boot, I can print to this printer just fine using:

Code:

However, If I boot disconnected from the network and print to myprinter, the jobs obviously cannot print. They get spooled. Using 'lpstat -t' I can see that the spooled print jobs are assigned a job number and that myprinter is trying to connect. I shutdown, reconnect my ethernet network and boot up. All my printer configuration is blown away.

/etc/cups/printers.conf has been wiped out to look like this:

Code:

My 'good' printer configuration is copied to printers.conf.O

To recover from this, I need to stop cups, copy printers.conf.O to printers.conf, restart cups, and re-setup my network printer.

So, What causes my printers to get wiped out? I've repeated this on 4 systems with the same setup.
