View 4 RepliesNew to ubuntu. I love the OS. Everything works great except for the network connection. It tells me I need to activate the b43 drivers with fwcutter, but here are the following problems:
1) I can't download and install the drivers b/c I can't connect to the internet wired or wireless.
2) I can't find the website to download the appropriate drivers (I've looked for hours)
3)I'm not too sure how to install them since I don't have a background in coding.
I really like ubuntu, I just need network working.
I'm been wanting to try Ubuntu for a while now, and when my mom's netbook started to get insanely slow with WinXP, I tried the Netbook Remix on a USB stick. I LOVE it, except I am unable to get the wireless working, which is the only thing stopping me right now from a full install.
I believe my problem is that I need to activate the two drivers "Broadcom B43 wireless driver" and "Broadcom STA wireless driver" which appear as unactivated when I go into the hardware drivers admin tools. Unfortunately this netbook (HP Mini Netbook FW376UA) does not have an Ethernet port, so I can't just temporarily hard wire it to activate these drivers.
So my main questions are: 1) How can I activate those drivers without an internet connection?, and 2) Do you think that activating these drivers is indeed the answer to getting the wireless working?
The details:
Machine: HP Mini Netbook FW376UA
Network Controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g
Ubuntu version: Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook
I have a problem with my wifi adhoc network which I previously had under Windows. I go to network connections, edit connection ,wireless, add then change to adhoc then I cannot press the add button as it is not highlighted, I don't want any security so have not enterd any WEP or WPA information, also How do I do a scan for wireless networks/devices in my area?
I have a number of devices plus the chap next door who connects to my wired internet connection using my wifi adhoc network that are unable to do so at present.
Code...
connection is set to connect automatically using dhcp... used to work, after a latest updates basically stopped working.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Network manager is missing (it is usually has a short-cut on the desktop-bar, which are monitor pictures, next to the sound short-cut). Does anybody know how to activate it again (terminal-based command or etc)? See my attachment, i made a circle sign on the missing network-manager.

I've been running F10 since it first came out, and I was happy to see it was the first Fedora release that automatically recognized my Atheros wireless card. I have to run system-config-network and press the "activate" button when I start the machine, but that's ok and no big deal. But today, for whatever reason,in system-config-network, the "activate" and "deactivate" buttons are grayed out and I cannot start the device so I have no network access. When I boot the machine into Windows, it works fine.

I have downloaded and installed Fedora 10.Now I am setting up the network and in the 'network configuration' it finds the wireless device (ralink) in the 'hardware' section of the configuration - I set this to eth0 (it originally set itself to wan0 and I still had the same problems, now it doesn't give me the option to put it back to wan0).Now I goto the devices tab and try to set up the device with eth0 - which it seems to find. But when I goto activate the device it tells me that eth0 cannot be found
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had installed Fedora 12. I am using 4 LAN Cards. All these cards were configured using network manager, but i am not able to acivate /deactivate these cards using acivate /deactivate buttons since they got disabled. I could activate the cards by running /etc/init.d/restart network. Anyone knows why the acivate /deactivate buttons in network manager are disabled .

I have installed qemu/kvm and created a Bridged network connection which works just fine(Windows 7 VM won't work in NAT mode.)
But when I try to use NetworkManager it says that I have no network connection because the network isn't managed, (I set the settings in ifcfg-br0 and ifcfg-eth0 to be managed)
The real problem is that now I can't use my VPN connections (I have many) in NetworkManager.
Is there a way to have both of these pieces of functionality?
I am using FC14
The problem I'm having is on a CentOS4 machine. I don't use CentOS regularly (Ubuntu and Mint, yes) so I'm not sure if this is something that is particular to CentOS or not. I have this workstation that controls a microscope controller. The drives in this computer are some POS Seagate drives where the data storage drive has already conked out more than once. I think this time there was a problem with the OS drive that caused a lot of filesystem errors. I wasn't able to boot the OS at first but I ran fsck from a liveCD and was able to fix the (hundreds of) errors and the OS can now boot from the drive. The problem ave now is the ethernet does not work. I know there's not a problem with the ethernet controllers because I can access the internet through the liveCD. When I try to activate eth0, or eth1, I get the following error:Quote:
Cannot activate network device eth0!
network-functions: line 180: ip: command not found
WARNING: /lib/modules/2.6.9-89.0.9.ELsmp/modules.symbols line 1: ignoring bad line starting with 'GROUP'

I installed the driver for my network card. iwconfig and ifconfig are all responsive to connecting to the network, I'm given an access point address. Then, I try to connect to a website and no dice. ping www.google.com yields no result. What gives?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 network card on my server at work.Everything works fine for a few weeks, then randomly the network connection on the server will stop working. After it stops working, I will try to reconnect with the network manager, it shows a wired connection available, it shows the "connection in progress"animation, then the "connection disabled" icon.
I uninstalled the network manager and used manual configuration, but do you think the network manager was the issue? I can't have the server disconnecting randomly every few weeks with no way to know what the real problem is. Was there an issue with the network manager with 10.04?

I am trying to Setup citrix ICA client 9 on Ubuntu 9.04 Server. I installed it very easily and I am not getting any lib error also. But when I try to connect to the citrix server, it fails with a pop up saying "Error in Network Connection Network or Dialup connection may be preventing ......" This is driving me crazy from 3 days. My project is to check the feasiblity of a Linux desktop
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.
The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:
eth0
Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 001:aa0:91:a7:51
UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

collisons: 0 txqueulen: 1000
RX bytes: 0 (0.0 B) TX bytes: 0 (0.0 B)

If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.
I would like to use my S-video connection on my ATI Mobility Radeon x1400 Laptop but I don't know how to do it. Could someone help please? I have never tried to use it before so I cannot tell whether it worked with previous versions.

I've an Acer Aspire One A110 Netbook running Linpus Lite. All seems relatively well however I've plugged in a Bluetooth USB dongle and nothing has happened - oh well, I didn;t expect it to. Of course I'm used to MS Windows OS plug 'n Play and I know this isn't generally how Linpus Lite OS operates but despite looking around I can't find an explanation on how to activate the Bluetooth adapter. There are instructions and demos on how to add a Bluetooth component to the board but I'm not an engineer, neither professional nor hobbyist, so Im not interested in doing that. I've downloaded the Bluetooth zip file from the Acer Spire One support site it has been installed on the Netbook but there still appears to be no Bluetooth connection.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running fedora vm under XP host and using NAT connection to the Internet. It usually works fine, but some time the connection is just lost. I went menu System->Admin->Network and see the interface eth0, but I cannot activate or deactivate. The status is inactive. (when the connect works, the status is active). so I try "ifdown eth0" and "ifup eth0" command, and got
"Error: Connection activation failed: Device not managed by NetowrkManger
The menu System->Admin->Network device control show no interface.
I am not sure what happened.
I can get a tunnel connected via terminal with: openvpn --config client.ovpn
However, when I tried to use the "friedly" gui (gadmin-openvpn-client), it keeps telling me to "import server certificates into client first."
I don't know what that means. Nor, do I see a tun device.
I am new to linux.Use broadband wire-line internet connection that requires username and password. Using GUI in Administration--Network I see realtek 8129 fast ethernet configured. However when I try to create new connection and activate it, it shows could not activate. eth0 inactive.
I am able to use my broadband connection in windows XP.
