I installed the driver for my network card. iwconfig and ifconfig are all responsive to connecting to the network, I'm given an access point address. Then, I try to connect to a website and no dice. ping www.google.com yields no result. What gives?

Basically, I know my card is connected to something, because firefox can do a google search, but I'm not sure what network it is connected to, since there are a couple open networks in my apt complex. Is there a command to list the ssid? that I'm connect to? and, I'm new to all this so I'm not sure if ssid is the correct term. I have a consumer grade netgear wireless "router" that I bought from bestbuy which has a "passphrase".
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5721 network card on my server at work.Everything works fine for a few weeks, then randomly the network connection on the server will stop working. After it stops working, I will try to reconnect with the network manager, it shows a wired connection available, it shows the "connection in progress"animation, then the "connection disabled" icon.
I uninstalled the network manager and used manual configuration, but do you think the network manager was the issue? I can't have the server disconnecting randomly every few weeks with no way to know what the real problem is. Was there an issue with the network manager with 10.04?
I have had this configuration at home for years, but I just changed my line provider and I cannot get it to work.
I have a desktop machine with two ethernet interfaces, eth0 and eth1. Etho is connected to the cable modem and that seems to be working fine - well, I'm posting here, right? Eth1 is connected to a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point. I have eth1 set to 192.168.1.240 and the AP set to 192.168.1.245 (the default). The desktop runs CentOS and I have dhcpd running, and I have focused on the dhcpd.conf file, which I have changed many times. Here is the latest incarnation:

View 4 Replies View RelatedI connect to the WPA2-secured wifi of a university. They use 802.11b/g on the 2.4 GHz band and 802.11a/n on the 5.2 GHz band. Both have the same SSID xyz (for roaming).Now, when I connect to the SSID xyz, ubuntu 11.04 (natty) chooses the Access Point with the highest Strength. However, this is a 802.11g Access Point which is very slow because of high usage and there is no 802.11n available. Slow pings make it unusable.network-manager is just too stupid to connect to the much faster 5GHz 802.11n AP.Windows 7 autmatically connects to the 5GHz 802.11n Adapter with 300Mbit/s. That's what I would expect from ubuntu as well. I think Mac OS X also performs great in such situations.
The only workaround for me is to enter the BSSID (Mac-Address) of the 5 GHz AP directly in network-manager. That works and I have 802.11n with up to 300 Mbit/s. However, this is not the perfect solution, because now I can't use roaming any more (we have lots of APs here!).Do you have any Ideas to prefer 5 GHz band over 2,4 GHz band? I also tried the "band" gconf option as well as kernel module options of module iwlagn with no success.
I have a Netgear WG511GE PCMCIA card, and a driver from the original installation disk. I used an ndiswrapper-utils gui called ndisgtk to install the driver. I then do the following to verify an installation:

Unfortunately, when I put the PCMCIA card in, nothing happens. On Windows, a green light flashes even if the card is not connected to any network. At first I thought this might be a hardware issue, so I did #lspci and got:

Lo and behold, when I put a different unbranded Wireless PC Card in it works. I'm no expert in Networks, but to me this suggests a driver problem (i.e. the card is physically detected it just won't work). However, the correct driver was installed with ndisgtk and this was verified with #ndiswrapper -l, hence the confusion.
I'd be grateful if anyone else has had this problem/knows of this problem and is willing to share the solution with me/point me in the right direction. So far, Google has returned a few posts from a few years ago talking about patching kernels and manually building files etc (just before Prism54 became integrated into the Linux kernel).
if i'm connected to my wireless network it only gives me internet acces for a few minutes. The connection with my network stays but i have to close it back of and reconnect before i get back online.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with fluxbox installed. Occasionally my internet connection will stop working, but when I check on wifi radar, I'm still connected to the network. The router is not plugged into a computer at the moment, just the cable jack. It is likely a hardware problem however, since my other laptops also experience disconnects. Any help beyond "change the cable" would be greatly appreciated. For instance, even though I am connected to the network, I cannot post at the moment due to lack of internet connection.

Network Manager still shows bars indicating the network strength and shows that it's connected to the network in the dropdown. Selecting the network again causes it to indicate that it disconnects and reconnects. At this point I have wireless until the connection drops again. Possibly relevant details: This is the Purdue PAL2.0 network, which can be tricky to connect to, particularly for Linux users. It's a hidden network using WPA2 and PEAP. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1420n laptop, circa August 2007.

When I review connection properties, I see that the computer has a valid address, subnet, gatway, dns, etc... But it still can't connect to the internet. I can't ping external addresses either. But I can access internal addresses (local router).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed fedora 15 on my computer but I have a huge problem. I can connect to my router wirelessly for a couple of minutes only. Afterwards my computer has no Internet connection although the network manager and the icon on the upper bar says that i am still connected. I tried editing the /etc/rc.local and /etc/resolv.conf as mentioned in other posts in here bit no luck so far.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI can connect to my school's wireless network using the standard network manager, but often (not always) it repeatedly disconnects and reconnects every few minutes. Occasionally it also prompts me for the security information again (even after it previously connected successfully).
By running iwconfig when it's on the fritz, I can see that it's often switching access points for the network - which is what I think is causing the problem. It disconnects and reconnects even when the signal strength for the current AP is fine, and it will often switch to an AP with a weaker signal strength.

1 linksys router: gets the net from PPPOE and give the network DHCP. The router IP is 192.168.1.1. 1 windows laptop that work wireless and wired. 1 debian desktop that work wired and not working wireless. THe problem with the debian desktop is like this: I have a TP-Link TL-WN321G installed and found by lsusb command. I tryed with wicd who said that the connection is WEP (and it's not, it is setup to WPA on the router and the network-manager conncetion) and when i try to connect i get bad password. I tryed with network-manager uninstalled and no chance.

I can ping addresses within our network (e.g. the Windows computer in the next room), and I can ping the router, but if I ping, say www.google.com, it says "Destination Net Unreachable". Previously, in Jaunty, I had a similar problem.I found a workaround: launch Pidgin. Somehow, launching Pidgin temporarily edits my configuration. However, in Karmic, I have no access to Pidgin, however, and Empathy does not do the same thing. Since I have no Internet, I cannot "sudo apt-get install" anything.How can I get the Internet working?
View 5 Replies View RelatedOkay, a couple of weeks ago I was running 10.04, got an auto update that needed a firefox restart, so rather than restart, I just shutdown the computer for the weekend. When I booted the computer on Monday it would find sites (www.google.com, start.ubuntu.com) but it wouldn't download the necessary items to load the page. Now I have a windows laptop sitting next to the ubuntu box and it was online with no issues, so I know it wasn't the connection itself. So I decided that the update messed up the system so I downloaded 10.10 and installed that and ran that all last week.
On Friday I got a system update that required a firefox restart, so I ran firefox for the day and decided that since it was friday, I would just shutdown the computer and reboot on Monday.Well now Monday is here and now I again have sloooowww internet, to the point that URL.. times out and won't come up. I have tried doing a traceroute on both machines and the windows box gets all the way to www.google.com, but the ubuntu box gets about halfway there and then gets no response. I am at a loss, I don't want to reinstall every week. I did try to reboot and run the previous version of 10.10 that shows in the boot menu, but that does the same thing. One thing I did notice is that the broadcast ip is different than the machine IP, don't know enough to know if this is a problem.
I have recently installed open suse 11.2 on my hp hdx18 laptop replacing windows 7. trying to use my phone as a bluetooth access point so i can connect to the internet when im out and about and there isnt a bt openzone network around. my phone is a sony ericsson w910i. i can connect to my phone via blue tooth and use it as a remote control and browse, send and receive files. but cant figure out how to use it as an access point to the internet. win7 had an option to connect via access point giving me instant internet access over the vodafone mobile phone network, but i cant find an option like that in open suse, if there even is one.

View 1 Replies View Related10.04 in a couple of identical lenovo laptops (of friends) suddenly have stopped connecting successfully to wireless, coinciding approximately with a mains power socket fail at the modem router, now fixed. presumably the machines were trying to connect to the access point, which may or may not have been working, but themodem router was not. Now, internet connection and wireless access point is fixed ok and is back up, and i can connect wirelessly to the access point ok using an eeepc with 10.04.2 with no problem so the access point is working ok
the target laptop/s are still ok via wired ethernet, and can *also* connect to a neighbours open wireless (a british telecom so called fon network, it asks for an account password), and all local wireless networks can be seen normally, and the home access point ssid can also be seen ok. so the aptop wireless is connecting ok, but not to this particular access point now. maybe someting has got screwed up? it is wpa2 and when clicked, after a long-ish time, the authentication is requested, then given, correctly, and still not connecting, asks for authentication again etc etc. no local secure wallet is being used.
when upgrading these laptops for my friend some time ago from 9.04 i have a small recall that 10.04 had a odd thing with wireless authentication (?) bug? i have deleted the network connections gui listing for this ssid and restarted the laptop, still no joy.
I dug up an old pentium 3 computer to play with. I have it connected to my laptop with an ethernet cable. Now, how do I access the files, install new OS, etc, etc? If it helps any, I think it runs windows 2000 and I'm on opensuse 11.3.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu command line only installed on my HTPC (it is XBMC Live installation). Kernel is 2.6.31-16-generic. My wi-fi card is AW-NE770 from AzureWave (mini-pci on Zotac Atom motherboard). I have successfully configured wireless connection to my router. Unfortunately, after short period of time connection drops. When I restart /etc/network/interfaces all goes back to normal. When connection is dropped, iwconfig shows that access point is not assigned. I have already tried installing backport drivers, removing security on the network (WEP and WPA), assigning static IP or using DHCP. Nothing works. I know it is not the router or my internet because I can be at the same time on my laptop and that works fine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed qemu/kvm and created a Bridged network connection which works just fine(Windows 7 VM won't work in NAT mode.)
But when I try to use NetworkManager it says that I have no network connection because the network isn't managed, (I set the settings in ifcfg-br0 and ifcfg-eth0 to be managed)
The real problem is that now I can't use my VPN connections (I have many) in NetworkManager.
Is there a way to have both of these pieces of functionality?

I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.
