Ubuntu Networking :: Installed Ubuntu Updates 9.10 - LAN Doesn't Work Now?
Feb 27, 2010
I just installed a series of Ubuntu 9.10 updates, and after rebooting the machine, I can no longer connect via ethernet / lan to the internet. The connection manager just shows the spinning graphic showing the adapter is attempting to connect to the internet. I don't know which update caused it, and I'm not very good with linux. I was using network manager, and I believe that package was uploaded! Help, what should I do now? My Ubunutu is completely useless without a connection to the internet.
I ran Update Manager and installed updates. Now flash video and other things with flash content wont work.
To give one example. I go to a web I use frequently and the following message is displayed at the top: "Additional plug-ins are required to display media on this page"
I click on "install mising plug-ins" and select Flash Player-installer. Bu then it tells me it's already installed! This has only happened since last night when I installed the updates!
I got Ubuntu 10.10 installed. Unfortunately, my wireless doesnt work. I'm connected to my router, but web pages wont load.
I thought to myself, maybe Ubuntu needs to update. So I lugged my computer out to the router itself and okugged my computer in. I went into update manager and let it do its thing. It was PAINFULLY slow. I had a less than 100 b/s. But I let it do its thing. After all 200 Mb's were done, which took a couple hours, I rebooted my system. Now, I cant even connect to my wireless and the internet symbol (the wireless bars thing in the top right) is gone.
So I tried skyping this morning and I could not get my webcam to work it seemed like ti wasn't turning on. TO double check that it just was not skype I opened up Cheese the webcam picture application and it said "no device" found. The only thing I have really changed on my computer since I last skyped were just system updates so something broke in it.
After the last updates (in which there was also the 2.6.35.28 kernel) my audio isn't working anymore. When i open an audio file, it goes foreward with steps like 5 secondos and i can't listen nothing. Videos i can see, but with no audio, and ..... videos go at like 2x speed (and also here no audio). I tried booting with the 2.6.35.27 kernel, but doesn't change anything.
Update manager pops up telling me there are new updates, but clicking on the 'Install Updates' button does nothing. However, if I click on Settings, then just close the settings dialog,it then says 'Starting Update Manager' and when that finished, the 'Install Updates' will work, but I have to do this every time I restart the computer.
I can see that in yum-updatesd configuration i can use smtp_server to rely mail notifications as per below outputs from man pages smtp_server SMTP server to use when sending mail, host or a hostort string. Defaults to localhost:25. The problem that this option doesn't work at all and it rely into the local MTA not the one set on the smtp_server
I'm running xubuntu 10.04 and I've installed media codecs as per the " Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto " thread. I also have faac, libfaac0, faad, and libfaad2 installed. But when viewing some videos or trying to transcode to anything with the aac codec I get the "no AAC" error. How can I fix this?
I installed a clean installation of ubuntu 10.04 inside Windows 7 and wireless worked normally in the beginning that I downloaded and installed all the updates "I selected without updating Grub".On the first reboot after updates, the wireless icon disappeared from the panel and could not connect to the internet although the settings in the Networking tools were correct.
I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 off of a disc and it worked perfectly, however after I downloaded and installed the system updates from the update manager, it stopped working and it won't even see my device. I have a Zonenet ZEW2500 USB wireless adapter.
I want to upgrade Ubuntu 10.10 installed through Wubi to 11.04. Now, Windows doesn't work. I can't upgrade Ubuntu by it because it is impossible to download files. Can I upgrade it without connecting Ubuntu to the Internet and starting Windows?
I recently had my AE 1000 linksys wireless adapter driver installed, the info for which can be found here:

But today I was presented with 142 automatic updates already downloaded waiting to be installed on my computer. I installed the updates and restarted my computer for the updates to take effect. Well, since then my wireless adapter no longer registers at all, it doesn't even recognize my router let alone connect to it. It is as inoperable as the day I got it.
I am currently using a different computer in the house to get internet. Should I go about following the same directions I did before and reinstall the driver, or is there a more simple way?
I booted F12 live cd with virtualbox and installed it on a USB stick(4GB). The installation was a success but, when I try to boot it, it doesn't work. Do I have to install the grup manually?
I have a RHEL Desktop and I added the rpmforge repo and yum installed VLC - the install itself run through without any problems, but when I try to start VLC, nothing happens. When I run a music or movie file and say open with VLC - nothing happens. I installed mplayer but it seems to have problems with playing streams and I'd prefer vlc anyway...I tried now several fresh installations using CentOS 5.2, RHEL Server 5.3 and RHEL Desktop 5.3 - same result .. VLC installs without being able to actually start it.
I'm quite new to Linux and totally new to CentOS. I need it to isntall a Lotus Domino Server, and for security reason i'd like to install the Acronis Linux agent to backup this server with my Win Acronis enterprise server. I have installed a new CentOS server 5.4 on a Vmware virtual machine, then installed the Acronis Linux agent following the instruction here [URL].. The agent seems to work because with the command "/etc/init.d/acronis_agent status" the sistem respond with "Acronis Agenti is running"
But i can't connect to the agent from the server console!
I have disabled the firewall to avoid any connectin problem...
I have Debian server and have installed Ddclient! It updates IP address when I restart the Ddclient but when I restart the router and my IP changes but the Ddclient does not updates the IP.!
My webcam was working when I installed Fedora12. But now it doesn't work after about 2 months of playing with this OS. Because of this, I decided to reinstall it's driver.I downloaded it from ATrpms website, but if I try to install it the terminal says"/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-174.2.3_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc12.x86_64 is needed by uvc-kmdl-2.6.31.12-174.2.3_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc12-0.20090806-4.fc12.x86_64"File needed: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-174.2.3_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc12.x86_64File wanted to be installed: uvc-kmdl-2.6.31.12-174.2.3_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc12-0.20090806-4.fc12.x86_64
I have this annoying problem since day one.I am testing out Red Hat RHEL5, everything is fine except DNS look up.If I ping www.google.com, it doesn't work, ping ip address it all works;if I bring up browser, put www.google.com it doesn't work, can't find the name, however, simply put ip address there it works. My DNS seeting seems ok, and the DNS works from Windows box.
I have a Broadcom B4312(I believe) wireless card and installed the drivers for it, but under the Wireless tab in Network Connections, it doesn't show "wlan0" or anything similar to "eth0"(which it shows under "Wired"). I ran iwconfig and this is what I got:
All my other systems work fine, tried setting mtu to 1492. Everything is set manually in network connections. Tried deleting and making a new connection. I set the dns servers in the /etc/resolve (don't remember the exact path.) I can ping servers fine. This was a fresh install of 9.10. Again, the internet worked fine until I installed the updates from the update manager.I had internet problems when I first started using ubuntu a couple years ago.
I bought a netbook and couldn't handle windows xp at all, so installed ubuntu 9.10, but the wireless network icon doesn't appear on the top of the screen like it should, presumably because ubuntu doesn't automatically recognize whatever card is in there. This is an asus 1001-HA. could anyone assist me with getting this thing up and running on a wireless network?
I successfully installed OpenSUSE on a 4gb pen drive using the instructions contained within this portal. However, for the life of me I can't figure out why the persistent feature doesn't work.
I have been searching through these forums the past couple of day as I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 64bit on my custom whitebox. I have had windows 7 on it in the past, but want something different now.
I guess my main question is if anyone knows a simple to install wireless card (pci or usb) for ubuntu 9.10 64. I currently have the Netgear WG311V3 PCI card installed, but I can not for the life of me get it to work under Ubuntu. I have tried numerous different methods from search google, these posts, etc. but I can not get any of them to work.
I have recently installed ubuntu 10.04. After some days of trying I can say that ekiga doesn't work with 10.04. With the same computer I was perfectly able to use ekiga with ubuntu 8.1, the 10.04 gives me connections problems.... it simply say says "Could not register (Failed)".I'm trying to connect with my voip provider (12voip.com) but it seems that I can't. I have even tried other programs like empathy, Twinkle, QuteCom but with none of them I can connect with my voIP provider. I think there are some connection problems but I really don't know how to face them. We have to configure router in 10.04 for sip connection? Actually I can't phone at all.
I've tried to use netcat in the past and assumed it was my stupidity that was preventing it from working... but this is getting ridiculous. I'll execute nc -l 3333 on a server at 192.168.0.105 (after opening it on the firewall of course) then I run nc 192.168.0.105 3333 on my laptop (from 192.168.0.101). and nothing happens... i start typing and nothing comes up on the terminal.
I run nc -z 192.168.0.105 80 which should ideally do a port scan of port 80 on that server (of which I'm running a web server that clearly works) but it doesnt even give me any feedback. Nothing happens. Now when I use the verbose flag i see that I am indeed connecting to the specified port on the server successfully (so the port scan one is a success but only with the verbose flag... which shouldnt be the case I believe). But still once I have the server listening and the laptop connected... I type in both windows and nothing happens...
